U.S. Navy's Drone Boat Swarm Practices Harbor Defense

IEEE Spectrum Robotics

Drone boats belonging to the U.S. Navy have begun learning to work together like a swarm with a shared hive mind. Two years ago, they would have individually reacted to possible threats by all swarming over like a chaotic group of kids learning to play soccer for the first time. Now the drone boats have showed that they can cooperate intelligently as a team to defend a harbor area against intruders. The U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) held its latest robot swarm demonstration in the lower Chesapeake Bay off the Virginia coast for about a month. Four drone boats showed off their improved control and navigation software by patrolling an area of 4 nautical miles by 4 nautical miles. If they spotted a possible threat, the swarm of roboboats would collectively decide which of them would go track and trail the intruder vessel.

Trump tells China: Go ahead, keep that U.S. military drone you seized

Los Angeles Times

President-elect Donald Trump says the Chinese government should be told "we don't want the drone they stole back" and "let them keep it!" Trump's tweet Saturday evening came after U.S. officials confirmed that they "secured an understanding" for the return of the U.S. Navy unmanned underwater glider, which China seized in the South China Sea. The comments may extend one of the most serious incidents between the American and the Chinese militaries in years. The Chinese navy seized the drone on Thursday; the Pentagon said it was being operated by civilian contractors to conduct oceanic research. The U.S. lodged a formal diplomatic complaint and demanded the drone back.

Will AI usher in a new era of hacking?

#artificialintelligence

It may take several years or even decades, but hackers won't necessarily always be human. Artificial intelligence -- a technology that also promises to revolutionize cybersecurity -- could one day become the go-to hacking tool. Organizers of the Cyber Grand Challenge, a contest sponsored by the U.S. defense agency DARPA, gave a glimpse of the power of AI during their August event. Seven supercomputers battled each other to show that machines can indeed find and patch software vulnerabilities. Theoretically, the technology can be used to perfect any coding, ridding it of exploitable flaws.

Data Sciences, ISIS and Predictions for 2016

@machinelearnbot

Do you know what is common between San Bernardino's shooting spree and the terrorist attacks in Paris last month? Jillennials, Jihadis who are Millennials. We mine data worldwide, a lot of it, a ton of it, every day and every night, and we do this for a living at PredictifyMe. We have partnership with the United Nations to protect school-goers in Pakistan, Nigeria, Sudan and Lebanon using our proprietary software SecureSim and Soothsayer . When the Paris attacks unfolded, we asked ourselves (and our database), how can we use data sciences to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Can we find out what factors influence an otherwise ordinary citizen to become radicalized?

The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Intel's Corporate Transition Strategy

#artificialintelligence

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), in the face of a declining PC market projected to decline still further, with disruptive factors at play in the data center market, and with the company's revenues across all business segments largely static over the last four quarters, is in the throes of developing responses to their significantly changing business environment. Despite a rise in Intel's overall revenue of 9.1% YoY in 3Q16 to a record high of $15.8 billion, largely due to unexpectedly high sales in the PC market, just two segments - the Client Computing Group and the Data Center Group - contributed 85% of the company's earnings. With the PC market in structural decline, increasing big cloud provider data center market control, and greatly increased data center competition, Intel is faced with shrinking defensive flexibility, which does not bode well for its long-term future. Performance in 4Q16 is expected to retreat from 3Q16 levels, as distribution channels reduce their stock.

Bird Audio Detection challenge

#artificialintelligence

Detecting bird sounds in audio is an important task for automatic wildlife monitoring, as well as in citizen science and audio library management. The current generation of software tools require manual work from the user: to choose the algorithm, to set the settings, and to post-process the results. This is holding bioacoustics back in embracing its "big data" era: let's make this better! In collaboration with the IEEE Signal Processing Society we propose a research data challenge for you to create a robust and scalable bird detection algorithm. We offer new datasets collected in real live bioacoustics monitoring projects, and an objective, standardised evaluation framework โ€“ and prizes for the strongest submissions.

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Cyber Defense

#artificialintelligence

Cyberspace is an increasingly hostile environment. In 2015, a PwC study of U.S. organizations found that 79 percent of respondents had detected a security incident during the year. Today, malicious hackers continue to wage on business networks and systems. Their aim - to extract data to sell on the black market. Making use of the latest technology, these criminals exert huge pressure on businesses to defend its assets.

How 8 CIOs are using machine learning to boost innovation

#artificialintelligence

"We are currently working on machine learning to pick up early signals of ill health. My current role is to ensure that this is implemented in line with national recording guidance which does not cover machine learning. This is currently in pilot phase in the A&E in Salford." "We could use machine learning where we currently have manual intervention in aspects of our workflows, and we could even get to the stage where we use a lot of machine learning in our underwriting algorithms," says Rob Harding, Capital One Europe CIO. The company has already implemented some aspects of machine learning into its data science team, but Harding believes there is much more to be explored in the area." "JLL has partnered with Leverton, a Berlin-based'proptech' start-up company, as we are seeking to increase automation in our lease management operations to ensure improved efficiency and swifter delivery of outputs for our clients.

'Natural thermostat' that cools the air in Earth's atmosphere during violent solar storms

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Revealed: 'Natural thermostat' that cools the air in Earth's atmosphere during violent solar storms Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) release electrically charged plasma from the sun These also create shock waves similar to supersonic planes making sonic booms The shockwaves heat up and expand Earth's atmosphere However, they also cause nitric oxide to form, which cools it down again Strong solar activity, which includes CMEs, is known to damage satellites, cause power outages back on Earth, and even disrupt GPS navigation services The shockwaves heat up and expand Earth's atmosphere Researchers have pinpointed the'natural thermostat' that cools the air in Earth's upper atmosphere after violent solar storms. Tesla gearing up for new Model 3 but struggling to meet production targets

The Guardian

Tesla Motors missed its vehicle delivery target for the second consecutive quarter and is on track to fall short of its annual target, suggesting the US electric car maker is still wrestling with production issues as it looks to transform itself into a mainstream, high-volume manufacturer. Elon Musk's self-driving evangelism masks risk of Tesla autopilot, experts say Tesla, led by Silicon Valley star Elon Musk, delivered 14,370 vehicles during the second quarter, missing its target of 17,000 vehicles, it said in a statement on Sunday. The company blamed an unusually large number of vehicles still in transit to customers and an "extreme" production ramp that led to almost half of the quarter's vehicles being made in the last four weeks. Tesla said it expects to deliver about 50,000 vehicles during the second half of the year. Having delivered only 29,190 vehicles in the first two quarters, even if it hits that target, it would leave the company just short of the low end of its earlier expectation of 80,000 to 90,000 deliveries this year.
