The future of robotics and artificial intelligence in Europe
I would like to thank the European Parliament for the invitation to speak at this seminar on a topic which is at the heart of the European Commission's activities, especially those of the Directorate-General I represent, DG Connect. Let me first state that we greatly appreciate and welcome the publication of the report of the European Parliament Legal Affairs Committee. Given the great public attention currently devoted to robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) this report is very timely and points at some crucial issues that need to be addressed. It highlights the opportunities robotics and AI offer and points towards the clear need for a coherent European approach and for Europe to have a strong presence and investment in this technology in order to maintain leadership in it. Many aspects of the report are directly in line with the Digitising European Industry strategy we launched in April 2016.

Tech billionaire's dire warning
A group of researchers at California?s Stanford University say they've created a computer-based artificial intelligence algorithm that can identify skin cancer as accurately as a doctor. Tech billionaire Elon Musk shared his insights about the future at an event in Dubai. ELON Musk believes artificial intelligence could be catastrophic for humanity. He thinks we are set to become a cyborg race, which will have to grapple with 15 per cent of the global work force being without a job, reports The Sun. The creative genius added a'universal income' would have to be introduced for the global population because robots will do everything.
Data Mining and Machine Learning in Cybersecurity - CyberWar: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum
With the rapid advancement of information discovery techniques, machine learning and data mining continue to play a significant role in cybersecurity. Although several conferences, workshops, and journals focus on the fragmented research topics in this area, there has been no single interdisciplinary resource on past and current works and possible paths for future research in this area. This book fills this need. From basic concepts in machine learning and data mining to advanced problems in the machine learning domain, Data Mining and Machine Learning in Cybersecurity provides a unified reference for specific machine learning solutions to cybersecurity problems. It supplies a foundation in cybersecurity fundamentals and surveys contemporary challenges--detailing cutting-edge machine learning and data mining techniques.
AI fights cybercrime as IBM Watson learns the language of cyber security - Computer Business Review
Watson can now help security analysts parse thousands of natural language research reports. IBM Watson, Big Blue's artificial intelligence (AI) platform, keeps on learning with the smart platform now well versed in cyber security. Watson for Cyber Security can now help security analysts parse thousands of natural language research reports which were previously not possible. It is claimed to be the industry's first augmented intelligence technology designed to power cognitive security operation centres (SOCs). The company said that for the past year, Watson has been trained on the language of cyber security and has studied more than one million security documents.
The Important Safety Feature Autonomous Vehicles Overlook: Humans
Technology may be advancing rapidly when it comes to autonomous vehicles, but humans still make the cut. At least that's the finding of a new report about safety challenges that highlights the importance of driver behavior. While autonomous vehicles have the potential for tremendous safety benefits, they will be sharing the road with traditional driver-operated cars for many decades, "perhaps forever," according to "Autonomous Vehicles Meet Human Drivers: Traffic Safety Issues for States" released earlier this month by the Governors Highway Safety Association, a nonprofit organization representing state highway safety offices. "The research and media attention given to autonomous vehicles often overlooks the safety implications that a mix of driver-operated and autonomous vehicles will bring, " Dr. James Hedlund, a former senior official with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and author of the report, said in a statement. "Unfortunately, ignoring the driver side of the equation may negate many of the expected safety benefits," he added.
Data Science: The New Monetization Model for Analytics Industry - Digitally Cognizant
"Data Scientist is the sexiest job of the 21st century" So, what exactly is data science and why all the hype around data scientists. Frankly speaking, multiple job descriptions and explanations of the same role make it harder for businesses to clearly understand what a data scientist is and does. This complicates the ROI business leaders expect when investing in them. To me, data Science involves mining actionable and sensible insights from multiple data formats by applying mathematics, statistics, machine learning, etc. Data scientists typically analyze data sets, or data depositories that are maintained within an organization and/or they analyze data scraped from publicly available sources.
Machine consciousness, sentience and mind
Artificial Intelligence, the term, was coined way back in 1956 by John McCarthy, a Stanford professor. As an idea it had its share of disappointments, battled scepticism and was kept on the backburner for several decades. However, intelligent machines and for them to be considered at par with human intelligence, are but two different propositions. Sci-fi readers would recollect HAL 9000, Arthur C. Clarke's AI–based protagonist in the book 2001: A Space Odyssey, which turns to an antagonist as the plot unfolds, and eventually turns villainous. Will it remain fictional, or is there a strong possibility that we may actually experience this in our lifetime?
