Machines that learn through real world observation could make predictions about the future. That's according to Facebook's head of AI, Yann LeCun, who says that the social network is working on technology to work out possible outcomes of future events. And Facebook is building the technology using computer neural networks that learn like a human brain. The super intelligent AI systems could be used to predict human reactions on the small scale or even the world stage. WikiLeaks is to publish all of the CIA's cyber weapons online, Julian Assange had suggested. The organisation has posted what appears to be the biggest ever leak of CIA spying secrets ever, but had previously refrained from publishing the details of the US spying agency's weapons. Mr Assange had argued that it would be dangerous to do so, since anyone could use them once they are made public. But he has now announced that it will put those previously redacted weapons online. Donald Trump's team has aggressively attacked WikiLeaks after it published files from the CIA. The WikiLeaks'Vault 7' documents make up the biggest disclosure of CIA secrets ever. And it wasn't clear how the President would react, given that he had previously told the world: "I love WikiLeaks". But Mr Trump's administration quickly attacked WikiLeaks for having published the CIA documents. White House press secretary Sean Spicer answered questions on the latest WikiLeaks disclosure by saying that leaks of national security or classified information should have everybody "outraged." "This is the kind of disclosure that undermines our country, our security and our well-being," he said.

Uber's self-driving cars will return to California's streets. But the company doesn't plan to pick up passengers in them, at least for now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles said Wednesday that it has granted Uber permission to run two Volvo SUVs on public roads. Agency spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez said the DMV also approved 48 people as backup drivers who must sit behind the wheel in case the prototype cars malfunction. The permits resolve a conflict dating to December, when Uber rolled out a self-driving car service in San Francisco without the approval of state regulators.

Stephen Hawking worries that humanity sometimes seems like a bunch of schoolyard bullies ... in a schoolyard littered with loaded machine guns and land mines. "Since civilization began, aggression has been useful inasmuch as it has definite survival advantages," the world's most famous cosmologist told the UK Times. "Now, however, technology has advanced at such a pace that this aggression may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war." Hawking says logic and reason must act as safeties on the triggers of such apocalyptic weapons. Besides catastrophic war, he also worries about climate change, mass extinctions and unchecked artificial intelligence, as he's mentioned before.

The CIA had a special programme allowing it to trick people into thinking they had been hacked by other countries, according to WikiLeaks. The agency was cataloguing the hacking methods of outside cyber attackers, including those from Russia, according to files published by the organisation. Once it had them catalogued, it could use them to break into other countries or people's computers or phones – making it look like a different country had done so. WikiLeaks made specific reference to the Russian Federation. Tensions between the US and Russia have escalated in recent months, in particular since American intelligence agencies blamed the hack of Democratic emails – credited with swaying the election of Donald Trump – on the country.

Led by Fei-Fei Li, the director of the Stanford University artificial intelligence lab and a newly minted Google employee, a team of academics recently explored a new way of tracking socioeconomic trends across the US. Rather than knocking on doors and asking questions, they pulled more than 50 million photos from Google Street View and fed them into neural networks. Simply by identifying the make, model, and year of automobiles appearing in the photos, the researchers said, their tech could accurately estimate the income, race, education, and voting patterns of citizens in particular precincts. If the number of sedans on a short stretch of road exceeded the number pickup trucks, for instance, they found that a city was 88 percent likely to vote for a Democrat during the next presidential election. If pickups exceeded sedans, a city was 82 percent likely vote Republican.

Apple has responded to WikiLeaks' explosive'Vault 7' document release, and claims to have already addressed the majority of the iPhone vulnerabilities allegedly exploited by CIA spies. According to files released by the whistle-blowing group this week, the CIA used special software and hacking tools to remotely control and monitor phone activity, both on Android and iOS. "These techniques permit the CIA to bypass the encryption of WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Wiebo, Confide and Cloackman by hacking the'smart' phones that they run on and collecting audio and message traffic before encryption is applied," wrote WikiLeaks in a release.
