How EPFL Made Pleurobot the Most Salamanderish Robot Ever
EPFL's Pleurobot is, obviously, our favorite robot salamander. This is likely because it looks so much like a real salamander, but more importantly, it moves just like a real salamander. Or, to be more specific, EPFL has spent years trying to make sure that the way Pleurobot moves is as close to the way that a real salamander moves as possible. In a new paper just published in the Royal Society journal Interface, EPFL researchers describe how they've combined "high-speed cineradiography, optimization, dynamic scaling, three-dimensional printing, high-end servomotors, and a tailored dry-suit" to refine their robot to accurately capture the degrees of freedom, range of motion, and gait behaviors of the real animal. Primarily, it's because they're cute, but there are a variety of much less important considerations that make salamanders interesting to study as well.
President Obama's militant kill list
Since taking office, President Obama has sent U.S. troops into action on land or in the skies of seven countries on two continents. Obama's administration has authorized Navy SEALs to kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and approved the fatal drone strike on an American cleric in Yemen. Here is a look at targeted killings under the Obama administration. Mansour was killed when a drone strike hit his vehicle as he traveled in Baluchistan, Pakistan. Mansour, known for his mercurial leadership, had been in the U.S. military's crosshairs for years.
Mark Cuban: Technology Is the Solution to Terrorism and Illegal Immigration in the U.S.
As yet another deadly attack on Tuesday tore through Turkey's biggest airport, Mark Cuban is demanding action. The billionaire businessman, appearing on Megyn Kelly's Fox Business show the same night, called for both presumptive presidential candidates to do more than just say'this is bad.' Cuban proposed that the country look to technological innovations for a solution. "How do you deal with immigration? How do you deal with radical Islamic terrorists trying to come into the country? You're going to need to use tech," said Cuban, in a Bloomberg interview earlier this week. Both the Republican and Democrat would-be nominees are technologically illiterate, he said to Bloomberg's Cory Johnson, which is the reason they are blind to technological solutions to the country's biggest issues.
Cybersecurity: Is AI Ready for Primetime In Cyber Defense? - CTOvision.com
Is AI ready for primetime? In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, he stated that machine learning showed great promise for cybersecurity, but that the necessary technology was probably five years out. If machine learning is currently so successful in other areas of society, why isn't it ready for cybersecurity? Machine learning is a subset of Artificial Intelligence, a field of computer science that started in 1958 when Marvin Minsky founded the Artificial Intelligence lab. Everyone, including DARPA, was pouring money into it.
Stephen Hawking: We're not getting any less greedy or stupid
Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives. Or, like Stephen Hawking, do you see little hope for us all. On Monday, the famed physicist caught up with famed softball interviewer Larry King. They'd last talked six years ago, so has anything improved? "We have certainly not become less greedy or less stupid," Hawking mused.

Next Big Future: Artificial Intelligence beats human expert in air combat simulator which foreshadows Skynet and drones beating human pilots
Artificial intelligence (AI) developed by a University of Cincinnati doctoral graduate was recently assessed by subject-matter expert and retired United States Air Force Colonel Gene Lee - who holds extensive aerial combat experience as an instructor and Air Battle Manager with considerable fighter aircraft expertise - in a high-fidelity air combat simulator. The artificial intelligence, dubbed ALPHA, was the victor in that simulated scenario, and according to Lee, is "the most aggressive, responsive, dynamic and credible AI I've seen to date." The application is specifically designed for use with Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) in simulated air-combat missions for research purposes. Retired United States Air Force Colonel Gene Lee, in a flight simulator, takes part in simulated air combat versus artificial intelligence technology developed by a team comprised of industry, US Air Force and University of Cincinnati representatives. In its earliest iterations, ALPHA consistently outperformed a baseline computer program previously used by the Air Force Research Lab for research.
Who is the least trustworthy MP in the Commons?
Ukip's only MP, Douglas Carswell, is the least friendly and trustworthy in the House of Commons, a social media survey has found. The newly appointed Shadow Health Secretary, Diane Abbott, was the most patronising, the same survey found. Artios, an artificial intelligence company, 'blind tested' 1,000 UK adults with social media content from an equal cross section of political parties. The highest rating for trustworthiness was only 14 per cent for a post by Prime Minister David Cameron. Lib Dem MP Greg Mudholland scored as the most friendly.
The AI 'Top Gun' that can beat the military's best
It is every Top Gun's worst nightmare - an AI can can outmanoeuvre them in the air. Now researchers have tested their AI on a retired top gun - and left him stunned. Retired United States Air Force Colonel Gene Lee took on the AI in a simulator - and lost. An AI has beated Air Force pilots in simulated showdowns for the first time.
