Twelve types of Artificial Intelligence (AI) problems

@machinelearnbot

In this article, I cover the 12 types of AI problems i.e. I address the question: in which scenarios should you use Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Recently, I conducted a strategy workshop for a group of senior executives running a large multi national. In the workshop, one person asked the question: How many cats does it need to identify a Cat? This question is in reference to Andrew Ng's famous paper on Deep Learning where he was correctly able to identify images of Cats from YouTube videos.

The 10 Algorithms Machine Learning Engineers Need to Know

@machinelearnbot

It is no doubt that the sub-field of machine learning / artificial intelligence has increasingly gained more popularity in the past couple of years. As Big Data is the hottest trend in the tech industry at the moment, machine learning is incredibly powerful to make predictions or calculated suggestions based on large amounts of data. Some of the most common examples of machine learning are Netflix's algorithms to make movie suggestions based on movies you have watched in the past or Amazon's algorithms that recommend books based on books you have bought before. So if you want to learn more about machine learning, how do you start? For me, my first introduction is when I took an Artificial Intelligence class when I was studying abroad in Copenhagen. My lecturer is a full-time Applied Math and CS professor at the Technical University of Denmark, in which his research areas are logic and artificial, focusing primarily on the use of logic to model human-like planning, reasoning and problem solving.

The Best R Packages for Machine Learning

@machinelearnbot

This report was originally published on The Data Incubator Blog. You can view the the report in it's entirety here: Ranked 16 R Packages for Machine Learning The most frequently asked question in our data science training program is "what is the best programming language for machine learning?" The resulting discussion, depending on the day, either ends in a hotly contested debate between R, Python, and MATLAB fans, or a full on WWE wrestling match. In other words, it depends. However, there is no doubt R is language of choice for the majority of data scientists who want to understand data, especially those looking to leverage its great machine learning packages. R also boasts being open source which is great for anyone looking to get started with machine learning in their spare time.

An AI invented a bunch of new paint colors that are hilariously wrong

#artificialintelligence

At some point, we've all wondered about the incredibly strange names for paint colors. Research scientist and neural network goofball Janelle Shane took the wondering a step further. Shane decided to train a neural network to generate new paint colors, complete with appropriate names. The results are possibly the greatest work of artificial intelligence I've seen to date. Writes Shane on her Tumblr, "For this experiment, I gave the neural network a list of about 7,700 Sherwin-Williams paint colors along with their RGB values. Could the neural network learn to invent new paint colors and give them attractive names?"

AI - How close are we? - Catapult

#artificialintelligence

In the first of series of blogs about Artificial Intelligence, Technologist Ecaterina McCormick explores how the successful development of AI is dependent on our evolving understanding of how the brains works. "The circuit was prepared to risk its speed. Efficiency of the Earth was to be inferior to the device of the man. The artificially connected neurons were exquisite land distorted in his destiny. Evolution didn't take long to get more and more intelligent beings in the ship's operations. There's a shock about life as we know it, the telepathic reality that can be guided by the power of the human race."

Google I/O 2017: Here's what we learned ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

Google served up a bevy of announcements, technologies and goodies for developers, but it also highlighted a much larger strategy where the search giant still organizes the world's information, but also begins creating systems that'll add context, delight you and potentially provide more insights. Artificial intelligence and machine learning is Google's competitive advantage and will be embedded everywhere. Google CEO Sundar Pichai talked AI non-stop during his Google I/O keynote and he's rearchitecting the company to be "AI-first." The extent of Google's AI reach is everywhere from Google Photos to Google Assistant to Google Cloud Platform to damn near every other product or service the search giant has. Google's AI efforts will even tap into human resources as it pivots to target job searches.

40 Interview Questions asked at Startups in Machine Learning / Data Science

@machinelearnbot

This article was posted by Manish Saraswat on Analytics Vidhya. Manish who works in marketing and Data Science at Analytics Vidhya believes that education can change this world. R, Data Science and Machine Learning keep him busy. Machine learning and data science are being looked as the drivers of the next industrial revolution happening in the world today. This also means that there are numerous exciting startups looking for data scientists.

2017 Robot Art Competition winners announced

Robohub

A record number of teams submitted beautiful robot-created artwork for the second year of this 5-year worldwide competition. In total, there were 38 teams from 10 countries who submitted 200 different artworks! Winners were determined based on a combination of public voting (over 3000 people with a Facebook account), judges consisting of working artists, critics, and technologists, and by how well the team met the spirit of the competition--that is, to create something beautiful using a physical brush and robotics, and to share what they learned with others. Teams are encouraged to hang on to their artwork as there will be a physical exhibition of robotic-created artwork following next year's competition (Summer 2018). The goal is to test Andy Warhol's theory that "You know it's ART, when the check clears."

'Gamified' language app Duolingo finally adds Japanese

The Japan Times

Just as many readers are swapping paperbacks for tablets, many language learners are trading in their textbooks for apps so they can study on the go. One of the most popular language applications on the market is Duolingo, a program that "gamifies" learning by rewarding players with points and new levels after they memorize vocabulary words and grammar points. The app, which has over 170 million users around the world, currently offers over 20 language courses, including Spanish, Vietnamese and Turkish. But Japanese had been notably missing until this week, when it was released on Friday by the Apple store for iOS. Duolingo's landing page for its Japanese course showed that more than 60,000 people signed up to be notified the moment that lessons were finally added. Duolingo co-founder and CEO Luis von Ahn said in a news release that Japanese was the most requested lesson in the company's five-year history.

WhatsApp update lets users 'pin' conversations, allowing people to ignore annoying chats

The Independent - Tech

WhatsApp has launched a new feature that lets you prioritise certain conversations over others. As its name suggests, pinned chats lets you pin up to three contacts and groups to the top of your WhatsApp conversation list. That also makes it easier to ignore notifications from the conversations that you aren't especially interested in, no matter how active they get. WhatsApp's existing mute feature is handy, but only fixes part of the problem.
