An A.I. Curated a Magazine Using Image Recognition Technology The Creators Project

#artificialintelligence

EyeEm is a photography community and marketplace of over 18 million photographers. It also publishes a magazine, also called EyeEm. For its fourth issue, Machina: A Curation of Real Photography by a Machine, the company turned to an artificial intelligence powered by computer vision, EyeEm Vision, to curate the magazine, selecting the photographs it feels are the best aesthetically and most impactful. Now, before the inner smartphone photographer in you rolls your eyes, understand that it is pretty neat that a machine can, in some ways, learn to identify photographic aesthetics like a human. Sure, an A.I. cannot truly exercise a similar series of complex calculations of why an image might be great or resonant, but it's certainly intriguing to see where humans are in imbuing machines with mental processes.

Putting the "AI" in PowerAI - IBM Blog Research

#artificialintelligence

IBM's latest Power servers come with an AI twist. Optimized for deep learning, a new so-called PowerAI toolkit will "help train the systems to think and learn in a more human-like way, at a faster pace," as announced at SC16, the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis. I spoke with Hillery Hunter, IBM Research's director of Systems Acceleration and Memory and Memory Strategist, about her team's contribution to the software behind the world's fastest deep learning servers. Hillery Hunter: In this case, AI refers to a collection of deep learning frameworks and algorithms. Today's launch represents our first public offering in hardware-software co-optimization for deep learning.

IBM Advances Artificial Intelligence with PowerAI

#artificialintelligence

Among the many areas that IBM is pushing forward with its Power architecture is in deep learning. Today IBM announced a new tool called PowerAI that aids in helping organizations learn things faster in a bid to generate advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. "PowerAI contains the major machine, deep-learning open-source software that we have optimized and compiled for our POWER8 with NVIDIA GPU servers," Gupta told ServerWatch. "We are optimizing and getting the best performance out of the Power8 NVLink server and also from a cluster of these servers." The Power8 NVLink capabilities were first announced in September and provides improved I/O capabilities that come from NVIDA.

The cameras are coming

The danger with toys is that too often they're not taken seriously. This is the case with Snap's new Spectacles. Buried deep in the excess of the plastic and PR lies a camera system that tells us a lot about the future of commerce, security and communication. With rumors that Apple could design smart-glasses, and Mark Zuckerberg's call for "camera-first" photo-sharing, it's clear that some companies have already started to realize the immense business opportunity offered by cheap cameras coupled with smart machine learning. Imagine a pill bottle that you don't want falling into the wrong hands.

Humanity and AI will be inseparable, says CMU's Head of Machine Learning Verge 2021

#artificialintelligence

One of the big trends we've seen over the last five years is automation. At the same time, we're also seeing more intelligence built into tools we already have, like phones and computers. Where do you see this process in five years? In the future, I believe that there will be a co-existence between humans and artificial intelligence systems that will be hopefully of service to humanity. These AI systems will involve software systems that handle the digital world, and also systems that move around in physical space, like drones, and robots, and autonomous cars, and also systems that process the physical space, like the Internet of Things. You will have more intelligent systems in the physical world, too -- not just on your cell phone or computer, but physically present around us, processing and sensing information about the physical world and helping us with decisions that include knowing a lot about features of the physical world.

Nvidia's Blowout Earnings Point to a PC Gaming and Artificial Intelligence Boom

A lot had already been priced into Nvidia's (NVDA) shares going into the company's fiscal third-quarter report. Look for analysts to dial their estimates sharply higher after the latest results, and perhaps also wonder just how big Nvidia's long-term addressable market is....912 more words left in this article. How IBM's Watson will change cybersecurity

#artificialintelligence

IBM captured our imaginations when it unveiled Watson, the artificial intelligence computer capable of playing--and winning--the "Jeopardy" game show. Since then, Big Blue has been introducing Watson's analytics and learning capabilities across various industries, including health care and information security. Cognitive security technology such as Watson for Cybersecurity can change how information security professionals defend against attacks by helping them digest vast amounts of data. IBM Security is currently in the middle of a year-long research project working with eight universities to help train Watson to tackle cybercrime. Watson has to learn the "language of cybersecurity" to understand what a threat is, what it does, and what indicators are related.

WhatsApp launches video calling

The Independent - Tech

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature likely to strike fear into the hearts of its competitors: video calling. After months in the beta stage, the Facebook-owned tech giant rolled out the update on Tuesday to its more than one billion monthly users. The latest feature could be bad news for rivals such as Skype and Apple's Facetime, as Whatsapp ups the ante in its effort to position itself as a one-stop-shop for communications. GE is on an IoT buying spree

PCWorld

It turns out GE Digital's acquisition of ServiceMax on Monday and its Meridium buy in September weren't the company's only recent moves to expand its industrial IoT expertise. Two deals for small startups, completed recently and announced on Tuesday, add interesting technologies that should help the company develop new capabilities and help enterprises meet challenges in industrial IoT. Both were announced at GE Digital's Minds Machines conference in San Francisco and didn't come with publicly announced price tags. In mid-October, the company bought Wise.io, a startup that GE says can refine machine-learning algorithms through a process like natural selection. In the industrial world where GE Digital operates, recommendations based on machine learning carry higher stakes than they do on e-commerce sites.

The 45 Best Tech Gifts For Every Budget

TIME - Tech

Need help picking a gift? The 2016 holiday is fast approaching. That means one thing: gadget time. These are the TIME technology team's suggestions for everything from stocking stuffers, like Nintendo's NES Classic, to high-end cameras like Fujifilm's X-T2. Our suggestions are sorted by budget, from least to most expensive. We've also included a few lines about why we like each gadget we've picked for the list. Why we like it: They're a pair of neon-orange clip-on plastic extensions that make it easier to take down targets with the current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox controllers. After using them to play games like Overwatch, Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, we'll never go back. What to know: Purists may consider using these to be cheating. Why we like it: These Bluetooth-powered tags play a little song when prompted, so you can find them if they are within 100 feet of your cellphone. Tile Slim is just the width of two credit cards, letting it slip in a wallet with minimal heft, and Tile Mate is 25% smaller than the original tile -- making it a perfect keychain fob. What to know: Out of range doesn't mean out of luck. Selecting "notify when found" taps the community of Tile owners, anonymously. So, when someone walks past your lost item, their app will detect it and report it to the service, which will reveal its location on your app. Uber Gift Card ($25) Suzanne Darcy for TIME Who's it for: Anyone who lives in an area where Uber is available, especially in cities. Why we like it: It's an easy way to treat a friend or family member to a free ride, since recipients just need to enter the Gift Code in the Payments section of the app. Gift cards are sold in retail chains such as Walmart, Target, and CVS. What to know: Uber gift cards can't be used to make purchases through the company's other services, like UberEATS and UberRUSH. Why we like it: There are plenty of affordable streaming options out there, but the Chromecast makes browsing content as easy as using your smartphone. Since the Chromecast runs compatible apps from your phone on your TV, you don't need to log into apps on your TV or get used to a new interface. What to know: Your phone must be nearby in order to use and control the Chromecast.
