Conventional wisdom holds that artificial intelligence is the next great horizontal technology that will unleash future waves of innovation. Yet AI is not a single type of technology. It takes many forms and encompasses many, many uses. And to focus on AI is to miss the forest for the trees. The forest here is machine intelligence -- or MI, according to Deloitte's annual Tech Trends report, which was released today.
How Sexy Tech Could Tackle Some of Government's 'Boring' Jobs
Emerging technologies are making inroads in agencies, and late last year, an event hosted by General Services Administration's DigitalGov University looked at the multitude of application areas for artificial intelligence and virtual reality in government. But where could technologies like blockchain and AI have the biggest impact? Nextgov's Camille Tuutti sat down with Bill Eggers, executive director of Deloitte's Center for Government Insights, to explore that question. This Q&A has been edited and condensed for length and clarity. Nextgov: Where do you see blockchain really being implemented first?
New Coding Cognitive series launches in NYC - IBM Watson
From visual recognition to speech-to- text, the technology landscape continues to transform itself and it's happening rapidly. In 2017, the adoption and application of artificial intelligence is a more than just a far reaching dream, but a reality for most technology users. Not only is it critical that we identity these trends, but also build a workforce that adapt to these changes and build the new technologies that will advance society. We kicked off in New York City, hosting more than 40 coders, developers, early adopters, and those just interested in cognitive technology. All attendees were encouraged to take a coding course on the Learning Lab to prepare them for the event.
What does cognitive computing mean to marketers? - Which-50
Marketing technology has fundamentally recast the way marketers work. Analytics has provided much deeper insights into consumer behaviour and expectations, while new generations of marketing applications have made it easier to respond to customers by providing information and offers that best align to customers' needs. But, while marketing has come a long way, there is a revolution building that promises a huge jump forward in how marketers work: cognitive computing. This is a topic we explored in depth recently during a series of senior executive round tables with ADMA in Sydney and Melbourne. Like the participants in the round tables, you will certainly have heard of artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
Unsolved Problems in AI โ AI Roadmap Institute Blog
AI-complete problems are ones likely to contain all or most of human-level general artificial intelligence. A few problems in this category are listed below. Open-domain dialog is the problem of conducting competently a dialog with a human when the subject of the discussion is not known in advance. The challenge includes language understanding, dialog pragmatics, and understanding the world. Versions of the tasks include spoken and written dialog.

Mark Zuckerberg is working on MIND-READING brain implants
Mark Zuckerberg is funding the development of mind-reading brain implants. The Facebook billionaire has pledged $50 million (ยฃ40 million) of his own money to combat deadly diseases around the world. The funds will be spent by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, which works with a variety of projects to tackle illness. Some of these projects include technologies that could be used to read people's minds - although currently the focus appears to be on medical applications. One of them is for a company called Cortera, which is working to develop'clinically viable and minimally invasive neural interfaces' for people with severe disabilities.
Machine Learning is Fun!
Machine learning is the idea that there are generic algorithms that can tell you something interesting about a set of data without you having to write any custom code specific to the problem. Instead of writing code, you feed data to the generic algorithm and it builds its own logic based on the data. For example, one kind of algorithm is a classification algorithm. It can put data into different groups. The same classification algorithm used to recognize handwritten numbers could also be used to classify emails into spam and not-spam without changing a line of code.
#IDETECT Unite Ideas
In 2015, UN Member States unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, in doing so, pledged that "no one will be left behind." The more than 40 million men, women, and children displaced within their countries of residence as a result of conflict, disasters, development projects and other causes are among those most likely to be excluded from social and economic opportunities for development. Many face increased vulnerability to further cycles of displacement when durable solutions that reduce the risks they face are not found. Displacement is commonly addressed as a humanitarian problem, but it is also a sustainable development challenge. It is closely associated with poverty, inequality, insecurity, environmental degradation, exposure to hazards and the vulnerability of populations whose governments are unable or unwilling to protect them.
