WhatsApp update rolls out two-factor authentication for all users, helping keep messages safe

The Independent - Tech

WhatsApp has finally added two-factor authentication to its app, letting people make sure their messages are kept safe. The change helps keep people from breaking into your WhatsApp account and reading your messages, even if they have a password. But it must be turned on manually and requires the latest version of the app. Two-factor authentication, often shortened to 2FA, allows people to keep their accounts more secure than just with a password. It also ties that same account to something else โ€“ like an email address or phone number โ€“ that anyone looking to get into the account needs to have access to as well.

Microsoft Windows 10 update: New design ditches several classic features for cleaner look

The Independent - Tech

Microsoft is preparing a new user interface for Windows 10, and a leaked screenshot has shown just how different to the current version it could look. The image, posted online by Twitter user Tom Hounsell, shows off a number of small but significant changes to the taskbar and open windows. The new-look Groove app shows that Microsoft is considering ditching both window borders and the title bar. For anyone who cares, here's the full concept image that was in the background of #Microsoft's "Sneak Peak" of #Windows10 #ProjectNEON pic.twitter.com/I3cIlZfX0k The minimise, restore/maximise and close buttons have been incorporated into the window itself, and content now extends right to the edge.

Maybe We Should Let Machines Pick Our Leaders

#artificialintelligence

In light of recent world events it may be time to consider that letting people run countries based on their ability to get elected may not be the best way to do things. Perhaps it's time to let computers decide who is best equipped to be in charge of these enormous economies and bureaucracies. Handing the choice over to an unthinking machine algorithm may seem like a crazy alternative, but would it be any worse than the way we do things now? Humans have experimented with many different ways to select leaders, including elections, heredity, and military coups. But nobody has ever trusted the running of a country to a machine before.

A Gentle Guide to Machine Learning MonkeyLearn Blog

#artificialintelligence

Machine Learning is a subfield within Artificial Intelligence that builds algorithms that allow computers to learn to perform tasks from data instead of being explicitly programmed. We can make machines learn to do things! The first time I heard that, it blew my mind. That means that we can program computers to learn things by themselves! The ability of learning is one of the most important aspects of intelligence. Translating that power to machines, sounds like a huge step towards making them more intelligent. And in fact, Machine Learning is the area that is making most of the progress in Artificial Intelligence today; being a trendy topic right now and pushing the possibility to have more intelligent machines.

Want to turn your data into actionable knowledge, predict outcomes that make real impact, and have constantly developing insights?

Introduction to Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

The goal of machine learning is to program computers to use example data or past experience to solve a given problem. Many successful applications of machine learning exist already, including systems that analyze past sales data to predict customer behavior, optimize robot behavior so that a task can be completed using minimum resources, and extract knowledge from bioinformatics data. Introduction to Machine Learning is a comprehensive textbook on the subject, covering a broad array of topics not usually included in introductory machine learning texts. Subjects include supervised learning; Bayesian decision theory; parametric, semi-parametric, and nonparametric methods; multivariate analysis; hidden Markov models; reinforcement learning; kernel machines; graphical models; Bayesian estimation; and statistical testing. Machine learning is rapidly becoming a skill that computer science students must master before graduation.

Toyota To Spend $50 Million On Artificial Intelligence Research

#artificialintelligence

Toyota has announced a new partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University, aimed at accelerating the development of artificial intelligence and robotics. The Japanese car maker will pump $50 million into newly formed research centers at MIT and Stanford. Any developments will be shared with Toyota, and could be adapted to the company's self-driving program. See also: Toyota steers millions into U. Michigan AI project Toyota said it would start implementing self-driving features into its vehicles as soon as this year, but does not intend to remove the driver anytime soon. It wants driverless systems to work in all weathers, where low visibility might make it hard for a human to navigate.

What impact will AI have on Marketing?

#artificialintelligence

If last year the focus was on chatbots, in 2017 we must take a careful look at Artificial Intelligence - AI for short - especially in the field of marketing. AI is a scientific branch that aims to reproduce human behaviors and cognitive intelligence thanks to computer science. Supposedly, automated tasks would overall improve people's lives and allow them more freedom, since they will not have to deal with the "technical" aspects of their daily "chores". To give an example, AI is what make Tom Cruise so efficient at his job in Minority Report. Overall, from writing skills to driving skills, through vocal recognition and many others, Artificial Intelligence will impact the world more than Internet and robots combined.

DeepMind: AIs have the potential to become 'aggressive' or work in teams

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) agents have the potential to become aggressive or work in teams, according to researchers at DeepMind. A paper released by five computer scientists from the London-based company, which is owned by Google, used games to look at how AIs behave alongside one another. Joel Leibo, a research scientist at DeepMind and the lead author on the paper, told Business Insider on Thursday: "We were interested in the factors affecting cooperation." When asked about AI aggression, Leibo stressed: "We have to be careful not to anthropomorphise too much. These are toy problems aimed at exploring cooperative versus competitive dynamics." Describing the study in a blog post on the DeepMind website, the researchers said that they used two basic video games called "Wolfpack" and "Gathering" to analyse the behaviour of AI agents.

The German Artificial Intelligence Landscape

#artificialintelligence

As a Venture Capital firm for Artificial Intelligence we follow the growing AI market closely. For the German AI Landscape Map, we created a list of over 600 European AI startups based on internal research mainly deriving from our network and Crunchbase. Not every company that lists AI as a part of their product has AI in it. We have therefore taken the freedom to clean the raw data. We've ended up with 81 German Artificial Intelligence startups, which made it onto our map.
