iPhone 8 could include special technology for hiding fingerprint sensor under display, patent suggests

The Independent - Tech

Apple is preparing to completely redevelop its fingerprint sensor to feature in a new iPhone, according to patent filings. The rumoured development is probably a way of having the technology fit into its next handset, mostly referred to as the iPhone 8. Because that phone is likely to bring with it an entirely new design – and a range of never-before-seen features – some of the most central parts of the phone will have to be re-designed. Apple is planning on making the display of the new phone reach all the way across the front of the handset, according to rumours, doing away with the black or white plastic that has surrounded the screen in some form since the very first iPhone. AI set to shake up big data in 2017 - RCR Wireless News

#artificialintelligence

AI is largely seen as the full realization of what big data, analytics and automation have been moving towards -- a fuller implementation of machine learning. It is being explored in a variety of verticals. Ford announced last week that it is investing $1 billion in startup Argo AI aimed at developing a brain for connected, autonomous vehicles. Consumers are getting comfortable with the concept of AI in their homes. Amazon has said that it sold millions of its Echo devices, which rely on Amazon's Alexa AI for user interactions.

Designing for AI-enhanced Experiences

#artificialintelligence

Barriers are continually dissolving when it comes to the capabilities of machine learning programs. As an experience strategy and design professional, I find myself asking more frequently, "Are there relevant design principles I should consider when creating these new types of digital experiences?" Many of these platforms have an opacity that can affect the overall user experience in a variety of ways. In this blog post, I'll suggest guidelines for constructing AI-enhanced experiences, and apply them to examples in the healthcare, consumer, and financial sectors. The principles I cover may not apply uniformly to all digital experiences, since other factors might predominate.

Microsoft shares open source system for training drones, other gadgets to move safely on their own - Next at Microsoft

When most people with normal vision walk down the street, they can easily differentiate the things they must avoid – like trees, curbs and glass doors -- from the things they don't, such as shadows, reflections and clouds. Chances are, most people also can anticipate what obstacles they should expect to encounter next -- knowing, for example, that at a street corner they should watch out for cars and prepare to step down off the curb. The ability to differentiate and anticipate comes easily to humans but it's still very difficult for artificial intelligence-based systems. That's one big reason why self-driving cars or autonomous delivery drones are still emerging technologies. Microsoft researchers are aiming to change that.

Rapid AI Technology Growth Necessitates Recruiting A CAIO - Strategic Search

#artificialintelligence

With the proliferation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) scientific, engineering and technical innovation and its impact on other cutting edge technology fields such as IoT (Internet of Things) and robotics, it may be time for your organization to formulate a job description and start recruiting for a CAIO (Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer). Failure to immediately start this staffing process can harm your business! The Commerce Department reported Friday that U.S. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) ended the 4th quarter of 2016 on a lackluster, inflation and seasonally adjusted annual rate, of only 1.9%. Because GDP is the broadest measure of the goods and services produced by America, this is yet another indication of America's slowest economic expansion since World War II. As a result, this latest data underscores the obstacles facing President Trump as he pushes for economic growth after he has repeatedly stating a goal of 4% expansion in his one year!

Conversational Banking Will Transform the Financial Services Industry

#artificialintelligence

Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and the surging popularity of messaging apps, conversational interfaces are enabling unprecedented banking engagement and re-establishing relationship banking. Chatbots are a simple, lightweight solution to a host of legacy banking problems, giving progressive banks and credit unions a competitive industry edge. The arrival of the digital age has disrupted the retail banking industry and altered the relationship between banks and their customers. Where banking once meant interacting with customers in brick-and-mortar branches, new digital banking channels like websites and mobile apps have opened an entirely new way to reach customers and do business. Online and mobile banking have allowed banks to reach customers more easily and frequently, and have given customers unprecedented access to their financial information.

What the data says about Valentine's Day and chatbots

#artificialintelligence

In honor of Valentine's Day, we took a look at the difference in usage between men and women on Facebook Messenger bots over the past two months. On average, about 63 percent of bot users are men and 28 percent are women, with the remaining 9 percent unknown or undetected. Men tend to be more engaged than women in terms of sessions per user per month -- on average they have about 50 percent more sessions. Women, however, tend to message more per session – about 12 percent more messages in each session. In regards to the number of bots men and women use: While the vast majority of users have only used one bot, about 14 percent of men and 10.6 percent of women use more than one bot.

Advanced Lane detection

You can find my code here. It might be more up to date than the article;). This is the fourth article in the self driving cars series. If you want to know why I'm sharing this and more about my journey, please read this. For each image of the given video, we are going to detect the driving lane lines on each side of the car and visually highlight the area between them.

Artificial Intelligence Enters The Classroom

#artificialintelligence

Dennis Bonilla, executive dean of information systems and technology at the University of Phoenix, told NewsOne that the transformational technology reaches into classrooms and impacts how students learn. For example, in flipped classrooms, teachers assign students homework that utilizes artificial intelligence technology. The software can send the instructor a detailed analysis of students' comprehension of the assignment. That can enable the teacher to prepare more effectively for interactive learning the next day in the classroom. With that data in hand, the teacher can begin her lesson with information that large swaths of students struggled to understand.
