A toddler meanders unsteadily through the living room, pausing by a sleek black cylinder in the corner. "Alexa," he says in a high-pitched voice. The cylinder acknowledges the request, despite the muffled pronunciation, and the music starts. Alexa, a cloud-based speech recognition software from Amazon and the brain of its black cylindrical loudspeaker Echo, has been a big hit around the world โ€“ except for the younger ones, who take it for granted. Children will grow up alongside it, just as Alexa will evolve, as the AI powering it learns to answer more and more questions, and โ€“ perhaps โ€“ one day even converses freely with people.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Warfare

In the military context, this gives rise to a debate as to whether such robots should be allowed to execute such missions, especially if there is a possibility that any human life could be at stake. To better understand the issues at stake, this paper presents a framework explaining the current state of the art for AI, the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, and what the future likely holds. The framework demonstrates that while computers and AI can be superior to humans in some skill- and rule-based tasks, under situations that require judgment and knowledge, in the presence of significant uncertainty, humans are superior to computers. In the complex discussion of if and how the development of autonomous weapons should be controlled, the rapidly expanding commercial market for both air and ground autonomous systems must be given full consideration.

Weak general AI (WGAI) is AI that's capable of learning a wide swath of things, even things it wasn't necessarily programmed to learn. It can then use these learned experiences to come up with creative solutions that can flummox even trained professional humans. Basically, it's as intelligent as a certain creature-- maybe a worm or even a mouse-- but it's nowhere near intelligent enough to enhance itself meaningfully. It may be par-human or even superhuman in some regards, but it's sub-human in others. This is what we see with the likes of DeepMind-- DeepMind's basic algorithm can basically learn to do just about anything, but it's not as intelligent as a human being by far.
