What is Machine learning & Top 5 skills required to become a Machine Learning expert

#artificialintelligence

Machine Learning is simply making a computer perform a task without explicitly programming it. If we impose business rules to build a system and not let the machine find patterns on its own, we will not be able to put up with the versatility of the data that comes in. Let's explain this with an example. Suppose we manually looked through data to find patterns and coded our systems such that if I fall in the age range of 30-40 and I am a male, I would like product X more than product Y. What we did not consider is the personalization parameter.

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda - March Machine Learning Mania 2016

#artificialintelligence

The March Madness competitions have the perfect trifecta for regret: repeated leaderboard feedback, ability to tweak probabilities based on personal biases, and a wealth of different data points. So what would you do differently for next year? The only tweak I did was changing the round 1 probabilities for seed 1s to 100% on one submission. I should have gambled a lot more because my two submissions are so similar. I didn't notice this cause I just saw that the predicted champions were different without realizing all the probabilities are within 2-3% of each other.

The role of machine learning in data science and analytics

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning has crossed from the lab to the business world. Machine learning provides insights that help to create more intelligent data-driven applications that improve business processes, operation, and easier decision making. In a conversation at Structure Data 2016 conference in San Francisco, Dr. Peter Lee, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Research and Jack Clark, Bloomberg News - San Francisco, talked about the advances we made in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning in recent years. Dr. Lee is responsible for Microsoft Research New Experiences and Technologies. He said that AI is essentially used to really understand what customers want.

Deep Learning in a Nutshell โ€“ what it is, how it works, why care?

#artificialintelligence

Deep learning and neural networks are increasingly important concepts in computer science with great strides being made by large companies like Google and startups like DeepMind. A zero that's difficult to distinguish from a six algorithmically

Data scientist Hilary Mason wants to show you the (near) future

#artificialintelligence

If you want to get a jump on the latest developments in machine intelligence, head down to where Manhattan's Lower East Side borders Chinatown, a still-gritty but gentrifying neighborhood where hip coffee houses are springing up next to industrial-supply outlets and wholesale stores. The location, an area in the midst of transition and modernization, is a fitting spot for Fast Forward Labs, a startup founded to help companies innovate and compete using what founder and CEO Hilary Mason calls "recently possible" machine intelligence techniques and technology. Fast Forward Labs has an unusual business model. It produces quarterly reports on emerging (or what Mason calls "near future") technology, builds prototypes to demonstrate the technology and offers advisory services. The business is based on a subscription model: For an annual fee, clients get access to the reports and prototypes plus time with Mason and her colleagues, who offer advice on how to apply the technology.

Laws for Mobility, IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Process Automation - Future of work

#artificialintelligence

If you are the VP of Sales, it is quite likely you want and need to know up to date sales numbers, pipeline status and forecasts. If you are meeting with a prospect to close a deal, it is quite likely that having up to date business intelligence information would be useful. Likewise traveling to a remote job site to check on the progress of an engineering project is also an obvious trigger that you will need the latest project information. Developing solutions integrated with mobile applications that can anticipate your needs based upon your Code Halo data, the information that surrounds people, organizations, projects, activities and devices, and acting upon it automatically is where a large amount of productivity gains will be found in the future. There needs to be a law, like Moore's infamous law, that states, "The more data that is collected and analyzed, the greater the economic value it has in aggregate," or as Aristotle is credited with saying, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

Microsoft deletes AI chatbot after racist, homophobic tweets, according to report

#artificialintelligence

In response to questions about Tay, a Microsoft spokesperson issued the following statement: "The AI chatbot Tay is a machine learning project, designed for human engagement". People could chat with Tay at Twitter and other messaging platforms, and even send the software digital photos for comment. Tay is essentially one central program that anyone can chat with using Twitter, Kick or GroupMe. After Twitter users were able to convince Tay, the name of Microsoft's chatbot available via text, Twitter and Kik, to spit out offensive and racist comments, it appears Microsoft is giving it a break. The TayTweets account, which was meant to mimic the language habits of a social media-frequenting millennial, arrived on Twitter with the ability to learn from interactions with other members of the Twittervierse.

Investing in Artificial Intelligence: A VC perspective

#artificialintelligence

My (expanded) talking points from a presentation I gave at the Re.Work Investing in Deep Learning dinner in London on 1st December 2015. Keep up to date with AI news through my newsletter on tech, research and venture. It's my belief that artificial intelligence is one of the most exciting and transformative opportunities of our time. Consumers worldwide carry 2 billion smartphones, they're increasingly addicted to these devices and 40% of the world is online (KPCB). This means we're creating new data assets that never existed before (user behavior, preferences, interests, knowledge, connections).

Read my lips: New technology spells out what's said when audio fails - Press Release - UEA

#artificialintelligence

New lip-reading technology developed at the University of East Anglia could help in solving crimes and provide communication assistance for people with hearing and speech impairments. The visual speech recognition technology, created by Dr Helen L. Bear and Prof Richard Harvey of UEA's School of Computing Sciences, can be applied "any place where the audio isn't good enough to determine what people are saying," Dr Bear said. Dr Bear, whose findings will be presented at the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in Shanghai on March 25, said unique problems with determining speech arise when sound isn't available โ€“ such as on CCTV footage โ€“ or if the audio is inadequate and there aren't clues to give the context of a conversation. The sounds '/p/,' '/b/,' and '/m/' all look similar on the lips, but now the machine lip-reading classification technology can differentiate between the sounds for a more accurate translation. Dr Bear said: "We are still learning the science of visual speech and what it is people need to know to create a fool-proof recognition model for lip-reading, but this classification system improves upon previous lip-reading methods by using a novel training method for the classifiers. "Potentially, a robust lip-reading system could be applied in a number of situations, from criminal investigations to entertainment.

Introducing Sophia, The Robot That May Soon Be Your Nurse

#artificialintelligence

Move over, Cher and Madonna. Within the pantheon of one-name only celebrities, Sophia has arrived, making her debut at SXSW Interactive earlier this month. According to all reports, she was a success, charming her way into all nearby hearts. Like any starlet, though, she made a misstep or two. When playfully asked if she wanted to destroy humans, she unhesitatingly responded, "OK, I will destroy humans."
