DOD's Work: Automated data can help beat ISIS -- FCW

#artificialintelligence

"We are absolutely certain that the use of deep-learning machines is going to allow us to have a better understanding of ISIS as a network, and a better understanding of how we can target it precisely and lead to its defeat," Work said March 30 at an event hosted by The Washington Post. Work said he recently met with a firm in Silicon Valley that can crunch vast amounts of social media data to deliver insights. The firm used its analytics capability to recount in real time how a Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down, according to Work. An official investigation concluded that a Russian Buk missile downed the airplane over Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing 298 people. Courtney Hillson, told FCW the company he referred to is Orbital Insight, a geospatial data firm.

Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, and the Arms Race to Control Tech's Future - Algorithmia

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence represents the next chapter of the Information Age, and Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, and others are engaging in an arms race to control the platform that dictate tech's future writes the New York Times. "The relationship between big companies and deep machine intelligence is just starting." So, what counts as artificially intelligent anyway? The Verge explains the difference between machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks, how they work, and why the future of AI is likely to be more subtle than you think. The next wave in technology isn't about the technology, but rather the market that emerges from the technology.

Ok, computer? Artificial intelligence robots set to become 'future of customer service', reveal Microsoft - Independent.ie

#artificialintelligence

Online artificial intelligence bots are set to dominate customer service in the near future, according to a new vision unveiled by Microsoft. At its Build developers' conference in San Francisco, the software giant showcased new tools to help companies build and customise artificial intelligence systems online to help with everything from ordering a pizza to booking a hotel room. MIcrosoft Skype executive Lilian Rincon demonstrated a booking made with a bot from the Westin Hotel in Dublin within Skype. She then showed how the bot could delve into her messages to organise a reunion with a Dublin-based friend. So-called chatbots are not new in customer service.

What it takes to work at Google DeepMind -- a London startup no one has ever left

#artificialintelligence

DeepMind was a relatively unknown artificial intelligence (AI) startup in London up until 2014, when it was bought by Google for around 400 million. Today some of the smartest people in the world are queuing up to work at DeepMind, according to an article by Celemency Burton-Hill in The Guardian in February. Interestingly, the same article states that no one has ever left DeepMind, which has created a series of algorithms that can learn for themselves and beat the best humans at games like Go and "Space Invaders." Based in up-and-coming King's Cross, DeepMind now employs around 250 people. However, as Burton-Hill points out, getting a job there is far from easy.

Death of Education, Birth of Learning

#artificialintelligence

To kill education and give rise to learning, but only when you place pedagogy first. Where the instructor engages in dialogue with the student and helps them develop thinking skills, problem solving skills and passion for a discipline. The maker learning movement, Sugatra Mitra's SOLE model, and schools like AltSchool are leading the way in creating learning environments where students take ownership. In large part, it's because a lot of assessments today are focused on lower order thinking.

HopData is a service that makes it easy for developers of all skill levels to use machine learning technology. HopData provides visualization tools and wizards that guide you through the process of creating machine learning (ML) models without having to learn complex ML algorithms and technology.

Time-out can't teach Microsoft bot manners

#artificialintelligence

A nearly week-long time-out hasn't taught Microsoft's potty-mouthed chatbot any lessons, so she's been sent back to the drawing board.

Paging Dr. Robot: The Coming AI Health Care Boom

#artificialintelligence

More than six billion dollars: That's how much health care providers and consumers will be spending every year on artificial intelligence tools by 2021--a tenfold increase from today--according to a new report from research firm Frost & Sullivan. AI will be everywhere--from diagnosing cancer to providing weight-loss coaching, says Venkat Rajan, who has the great title of global director for the company's Visionary Healthcare Program. "Prior to 2015, most of what was happening was sort of academic: pilot programs, exploratory, proof of concept-type stuff," he says. AI's ability to sort through scads of information, and remember everything it has ever seen, could enable a digital (and congenial) version of Dr. House, the brilliant diagnostician from the eponymous TV show, says Rajan. "At first, it's a complete mystery, it could be one of ten different things," he says, about the process in the show, and real life, called differential diagnosis. "And then he's able to sort through various issues, you know, illuminate certain factors on why it's not one of these other conditions, and he's able to pull something from memory that figures out ultimately what it is, and they can provide the appropriate treatment."

Microsoft's BUILD Conference: Linux, Windows 10, And A.I. Chatbots Take Center Stage

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) hasn't been shy about trying to win over Linux developers since Satya Nadella became CEO, and the company took its efforts to another level today at its BUILD developer conference: The popular Ubuntu Linux distribution will run on Windows 10, following this summer's Windows 10 Anniversary Update. As part of the effort, which involves a partnership with Ubuntu developer Canonical, the Bash shell and Linux command-line interface will be available on Windows 10. Microsoft exec Kevin Gallo: "This is not a [virtual machine]. This is not cross-compiled tools. Developers (rather than consumers) are being targeted here: Linux continues to steadily take enterprise server share, and Microsoft has previously said nearly ยผ of servers running on Azure use Linux.

Is Microsoft shifting its focus again, or losing it?

#artificialintelligence

"We, as a company, are optimistic about what technology can do for us." Those were among the first words said by Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, as he took the stage at the company's Build 2016 keynote. If that statement seems overly broad, it's not the fault of Nadella's speechwriter. The company's keynote was a reminder that Microsoft has its hands on many tech projects, and sees bright days ahead. But much of that future may not involve things you might find on an average store shelf.
