Goldman looks to machine learning to solve legacy conundrum

As at other large banks, however, not all Goldman's engineers spend their time developing new technology. Nearly one third of them spend a lot of their day monitoring the bank's 5,000 critical systems, running tests and looking for problems, according to Don Duet, head of technology, who is based at Goldman Sachs's Wall Street headquarters. With technology talent playing an increasingly critical role in banking and across all industries, freeing up some of those resources could have a significant impact, according to Duet. He said: "If you could imagine, from a pure talent usage potential perspective, that you could free up those engineers to work on new and innovative products, versus just running what you have? The opportunity would be just massive."

Microsoft and Facebook have teamed up with US university researchers to train a computer to simulate that same human curiosity and ask similar questions when presented with photos. Their results varied, with some systems better at generating human-like questions than others. At their best, a system asked, "Was anybody hurt in this accident?" At their worst, another posited the nonsensical, ''What caused the fall?' when shown the aftermath of a hurricane. Requiring all its executives to sign a statement promising to scrap the company's traditional authoritarian ways. Samsung is searching for new business strategies as a father-to-son leadership transition looms. Lee Jae-yong, 48, is expected to succeed his ailing father, Lee Kun-hee, at a time when Samsung's mainstay semiconductor and phone businesses face intensifying competition from Chinese rivals. Samsung has its eye on expanding into health care and pharmaceuticals, but has lagged Silicon Valley in embracing trends such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is the next major wave of computing, Android creator says

The next major phase of computing will be artificial intelligence, the creator of Google's Android software predicted Wednesday. Andy Rubin, speaking here at the Code Mobile conference, said mobile isn't going away as the main method of computing, but other methods will emerge, including technology to make regular devices smarter through artificial intelligence and robotics. AI is the practice of making a machine behave in a smart way, such as making a robot smarter or adding Internet connectivity to something like a washing machine. "Your dishwasher is a robot," Rubin said. "It used to be a chore you did in the sink. Rubin, creator of the Android mobile operating system, joined Google in 2005 when the search giant bought Android. Before working on Android, Rubin ran a company called Danger, which made an advanced cell phone. It was purchased by Microsoft in 2008. Most recently at Google, Rubin was the head of the company's nascent robotic efforts at its experimental Google X lab.

Microsoft has made the code behind its infamous'Tay' chatbot open source, meaning any developer can now use it to create their very own racist, sexist artificial intelligence. The release is part of the company's new Bot Framework, a toolkit which can be used to create conversational chat programs for a variety of tasks. The framework was announced at the opening event of the Build 2016 developer conference, where Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella heralded bots as the next big platform to be tackled by tech companies. Tay, a Twitter chatbot designed to mimic the online behaviour of a teenage girl, was unveiled last week as a demonstration of what the company's new technology could do. By monitoring what other users said to it, Tay developed an understanding of speech and was able to write new tweets of its own.
