Baidu Research and Peel announced that Baidu's Deep Speech technology is being integrated into Peel's smart home platform to create next-generation voice-enabled products. Peel offers a popular universal remote app for smartphones and tablets. It has more than 150 million users in 200 countries and 10 billion monthly remote commands. Deep Speech is a state-of-the-art speech recognition system developed using "end-to-end deep learning" by Baidu Research's Silicon Valley AI Lab (SVAIL).

Like self-driving cars, drones are often misperceived by the American public. The most common concerns with drones relate to safety, privacy, and security, and we have already seen early regulatory responses from state lawmakers as well as the Federal Aviation Administration. Despite increased regulation, Lisa Ellman, partner and co-chair of global UAS practice at Hogan Lovells, said, "Drone fever is here and drones are here to stay, whether or not we have the policy to enable their use." The solution she proposes is "polivation," bringing policymakers together with innovators to ensure policy promotes innovation. This is especially important since innovations such as drones are redefining what qualifies as aircraft.

Nvidia Unveils Massive Chip to Target 'Machine Learning' 4-Traders

SAN JOSE, Calif.?Nvidia Corp. is stepping up plans to expand beyond computer graphics into the field of artificial intelligence, unveiling an unusual processor for the purpose and a computer that uses it to solve scientific problems at extremely high speed. The company on Tuesday said the new Tesla P100 chip, designed for use in corporate data centers, achieves very high performance by packing 15 billion transistors on a piece of silicon. That is roughly twice as many as Nvidia's prior high-end graphics processor and some new server chips Intel Corp. announced last week. "It's the largest chip that has ever been made," said Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, during a speech kicking off the company's annual technology conference here. He predicted the chip would initially be purchased by unidentified cloud computing services and next year would begin arrive in servers sold by other companies.


Qatar holds third symposium for machine learning, data analytics fields

Students, global experts and researchers recently gathered for the third annual Machine Learning and Data Analytics Symposium (MLDAS) in Doha. Organized by the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) and the Boeing Company, the event served as a platform to discuss happenings in machine learning and data analytics from applications to recent advances. "When we organized the first MLDAS three years ago, we wanted to drive conversations and innovations in the machine learning and data analytics field," Dragos Margineantu, MLDAS co-chair and technical fellow with Boeing Research & Technology, said. "Since that time, we have seen unprecedented growth and, though we're just one piece of a huge field, I'm proud that we've been involved and helped connect respected researchers with practitioners and students to further advance research in the fields of machine learning and data analytics." The two-day symposium included talks on how machine learning techniques can be applied to scientific discovery and aircraft health maintenance.

Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that enables machines to learn on their own, without much human supervision, drinking deeply from the well of Big Data. Computers essentially write and follow their own programs based on the statistical relationships they discover in unstructured data--and are roiling industries ranging from credit cards to automobiles in the process. "It's speed and the ability to learn from data that gives machine learning the power to provide tremendous insights in ways that humans could never do on their own or with basic business-intelligence tools," says Mike Tuchen, CEO of Talend, a Los Altos, California-based big-data integration firm. Or machine learning "can use algorithms to mine historical data for outcomes that are different than with traditional simulation." At financial companies, for instance, machine learning can assess insider-trading activities and identify potential fraudulent activities that could trip a regulatory investigation.


Machine Creativity: Possibly Sooner than Anticipated

AlphaGo has won its series in the game Go against grandmaster Lee Sedol 4-1. I wrote an initial post about AlphaGo after its first victory against a lesser ranked player. Humans have very big brains compared to the neural networks used by the program which shows that humans are unlikely to be able to use much of their brain for any one specific task. This, combined with the ability to run machine networks fast and against a lot of training data will make this technology formidable for many tasks. Many people have been claiming that creativity will be one area in which machines will not be competitive with humans any time soon.


Facebook enlists AI to help blind users enjoy photos

The so-called "automatic alt text" generates a description of a photo using advancements in object recognition technology. People using screen readers on their iOS devices will hear a range of items a photo may feature as they swipe past the vast array of snaps on Facebook. In the past, people with visual impairments could only hear the name of the person who shared the photo, followed by the term "photo" when they came across an image in their News Feed. "This is possible because of Facebook's object recognition technology, which is based on a neural network that has billions of parameters and is trained with millions of examples," the company said in a statement. The current list of concepts covers a range of things that can be present in photos, including people's appearance, and pictures of nature, transportation, sports and food.


Robot Art Raises Questions about Human Creativity

In July 2013, an up-and-coming artist had an exhibition at the Galerie Oberkampf in Paris. It lasted for a week, was attended by the public, received press coverage, and featured works produced over a number of years, including some created on the spot in the gallery. Altogether, it was a fairly typical art-world event. The only unusual feature was that the artist in question was a computer program known as "The Painting Fool." Even that was not such a novelty.
