Facebook Messenger to be filled with robots that will try to sell users things based on their data

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

It is well understood that the performance of machine learning methods is heavily dependent on the choice of data representation (or features) on which they are applied. The rapidly developing field of representation learning is concerned with questions surrounding how we can best learn meaningful and useful representations of data. We take a broad view of the field, and include in it topics such as deep learning and feature learning, metric learning, kernel learning, compositional models, non-linear structured prediction, and issues regarding non-convex optimization. Despite the importance of representation learning to machine learning and to application areas such as vision, speech, audio and NLP, there was no venue for researchers who share a common interest in this topic. The goal of ICLR has been to help fill this void.

Analysis of 2,600-Year-Old Ink Inscriptions Provides Clues for Dating of Old Testament Texts Archaeology, Linguistics

#artificialintelligence

Historians have long debated whether the first major phase of compilation of Biblical texts took place before or after the destruction of Jerusalem and the Kingdom of Judah in 586 BC. While they agree that key texts were written starting in the 7th century BC, the exact date of the compilation remains in question. These documents are dated to the latest phase of the First Temple Period in Judah, around 600 BC. A new interdisciplinary study, led by Dr. Shira Faigenbaum-Golovin of Tel Aviv University, Israel, suggests that widespread literacy was required for this massive undertaking and provides empirical evidence of that literacy in the final days of the Kingdom of Judah. Using cutting-edge computerized image processing and machine learning tools, Dr. Faigenbaum-Golovin and her colleagues at Tel Aviv University analyzed 16 ink inscriptions found in the desert fortress of Arad.

Artificial Intelligence in healthcare predicted to grow tenfold in next five years

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionising multiple areas of information technology and has exciting potential for applications in biomedicine. It is predicted that the use of AI in healthcare will grow tenfold in the next five years. In a clinical setting AI will be a powerful tool, using patients' data - including their genetic sequence - to empower clinicians to make informed healthcare decisions based on the latest and most effective treatment options for each patient. Computer-aided diagnosis and treatment is currently being trialled at 16 cancer institutes in partnership with IBM's Watson Health AI venture. However, not all of the medical applications of AI will be for doctors; the technology has diverse applications for healthcare.

GMA Consulting and TermSet partner to offer intelligent document solutions to firms in the financial services sector - Press Release Rocket

#artificialintelligence

GMA Consulting, an IT consultancy specialising in solutions for the financial services industry, and TermSet, a provider of software which automatically creates accurate and consistent metadata and taxonomies for Office documents, PDF's and emails within Microsoft SharePoint, are pleased to announce a partnership to offer advanced document-centric solutions for firms in the financial services sector. GMA Consulting has extensive experience in implementing SharePoint solutions for its financial services clients and has identified two important areas where TermSet's advanced capabilities, such as summarisation and sentiment analysis can deliver clear benefits to its customers. Ben Grey, a Director at GMA Consulting, said "The first area we identified where TermSet could benefit our clients was managing research documents. Both buy and sell side firms produce and consume large amounts of research documents. When a piece of research material is uploaded to a SharePoint library TermSet can automatically produce a headline summary, classify the sentiment and automatically tag with metadata such as asset class, industry sector, company name and region / country. This will make it far easier for users to find documents they are interested in, particularly if SharePoint's advanced search capabilities are used as well. The second area we identified is legal document management. TermSet can help extract key information such as matter reference and counterparty names and tag documents with this information. This would negate the need for legal departments to manually classify documents, which is hugely time consuming and inefficient."

China talents ready for artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

CHINA has rich talent sources and great potential on AI or artificial intelligence thanks to strong mathematics and IT research as well as local firms' expansion into AI, said LinkedIn in a report yesterday after the AlphaGo's winning in a machine-vs-human Go match. There are totally 250,000 people work and research on AI globally, mainly in the United States, Europe, India and China, according to LinkedIn, the world's largest business social network. Besides the eye-catching AlphaGo, the artificial intelligence is already part of people's lives, from applications used in navigation, Siri and Google Translate to robots deployed in manufacturing and stock-advice software. AI technologies have been evolving steadily alongside the development of the Internet, big data, cloud computing and graphic chips. The United States has the most AI talents with the top employers Google, developer of AlphaGo, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and Apple.

The momentous advance in artificial intelligence demands a new set of ethics Jason Millar

#artificialintelligence

Let us all raise a glass to AlphaGo and mark another big moment in the advance of artificial intelligence and then perhaps start to worry. AlphaGo, Google DeepMind's game of Go-playing AI just bested the best Go-playing human currently alive, the renowned Lee Sedol. This was not supposed to happen. An artificial intelligence capable of beating the best humans at the game was predicted to be 10 years away. But as we drink to its early arrival, we should also begin trying to understand what the surprise means for the future โ€“ with regard, chiefly, to the ethics and governance implications that stretch far beyond a game.

Artificial intelligence and fashion: a platform play

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence, often called AI or deep learning, will undoubtedly transform the fashion industry. This transformation will have a few important qualities: 1) AI will be a platform play, not something brands build and launch individually; 2) the effects will mostly be invisible to the consumer; and 3) AI is as much a mindset as it is pure technology. It will not be a quick fix--it will take time. Before diving in, it's important to understand what AI is. This tweet from Christopher Mims is apt.

Hyundai, Kia to develop AI-based intelligent car Latest Tech News, Video & Photo Reviews at BGR India

#artificialintelligence

South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors on Tuesday announced a plan to develop artificial intelligence (AI)-based, Internet-connected car to create a new future lifestyle with a "driving, high-performing computer". The driving computer means a car will become a high-performing computer itself as the car, to be developed by Hyundai and Kia, will self-drive based on AI and connect to electronic devices while driving based on internet connectivity, Xinhua cited a joint statement as saying. The main concept of the project is a "hyper-connected and intelligent car", which means an interaction between cars home as well as home and office in addition to AI-based self-driving. To achieve the goal, the automakers will focus on four major themes, intelligent remote-controlling support service, perfect self-driving, smart traffic and mobility hub. The remote-controlling support service aims to check and examine cars on a real-time basis to detect potential emergency situations in advance.

Facebook launches Messenger platform with chatbots

#artificialintelligence

Facebook will now allow businesses to deliver automated customer support, e-commerce guidance, content and interactive experiences through chatbots. By providing utility through its huge developer and business ecosystem, Facebook could boost loyalty with Messenger, one-up SMS and keep up with chat competitors like Kik, Line and Telegram that have their own bot platforms. This confirms TechCrunch's scoops from January that Facebook was working with chatbot developers, and last week that a program for automated agents would launch at F8. [Update: the official name for the platform is "bots on Messenger" not "agents on Messenger," which was a previous codename.] Facebook announced a slew of chatbot partnerships with developers who got early access, like 1-800-Flowers, so you can order flowers by just sending its Messenger bot a friend's name. Or CNN could send you a "daily digest" of stories that match your interests, and skip the topics you don't care about.
