Google's artificial intelligence is going in the wrong direction

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence sounds cool in theory, and as Google CEO Sundar Pichai said at the Google I/O event on Wednesday, the company wants to "help you get things done" with AI. But one example that Google used to showcase its AI at Google I/O on Wednesday was anything but exciting. Using its new messaging app called Allo, Google showed how easy it is to find restaurants and make reservations, or find a movie and buy tickets. Allo is designed so you can do those things by having a conversational texting session, as you would with a friend, with a bot called @google that uses the company's new AI platform called Google Assistant. There were some other examples, like recognizing the context of messages and pictures you send between your friends and coming up appropriate short replies so you don't have to come up with the response yourself.

At I/O this year, Google displayed its vision for a more ubiquitous and conversational way of interacting with technology. Its Assistant is chattier, answering natural language queries with a more human voice, and it's found its way into several new Google products: the messenger Allo and the Echo-like speaker Home. Paris startup Shift Technology raises 10 million to help insurers fight fraud with artificial intelligence by venturebeat.com Shift Technology, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that leans on artificial intelligence (AI) to help companies combat insurance fraud, has raised 10 million in a round led by Accel, with participation from existing investors Iris Capital and Elaia Partners.

Rudina Seseri Says Her New VC Fund Aims to Exploit Boston's A.I. 'Advantage'

#artificialintelligence

Glasswing Ventures, which was registered in December of 2015 and launched in March, has announced its VC fund dedicated to early-stage tech startups, with a specific emphasis on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Rudina Seseri and Rick Grinnell, both former partners at Fairhaven Capital Partners in Cambridge for nine years, are the firm's founders and principal partners. The promise of AI technology enticed them to create a separate entity dedicated to investing in early ventures focused on this emerging market. Their home base will be Boston, but they'll be focused on startups all along the East Coast. "We will have the advantage, with all the AI talent - not just in academic like from Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, MIT - but also with the number of startups and companies on the East Coast, private and public, that have AI at their core," Seseri said.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Trial Transparency โ€“ Certara

#artificialintelligence

European and U.S. clinical trial data transparency initiatives -- such as EMA Policy 70 -- are creating additional disclosure compliance requirements for pharma and biotech companies. These transparency initiatives have, at their core, the distribution of clinical trial data for public consumption. Clinical trial data typically are contained within regulatory documents such as Clinical Study Reports (CSRs), Marketing Application Submission Documents (NDAs, MAAs, BLAs, etc.) and others. To achieve compliance with these mandates, pharma and biotech companies will need to anonymize and de-identify data sets in their clinical study reports and submission documents, produce research summaries suitable for a lay audience, and publish their clinical study information publicly. In this webinar, Synchrogenix President, Keith Kleeman will discuss how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and natural language recognition and processing are significantly improving the accuracy and efficiency of successfully anonymizing personally identifiable information, patient protected data, company confidential information and other sensitive information from clinical trial documents for public disclosure.

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Chromebooks outsell Macs, get big boost with App store

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Google's Play Store is coming to Chromebooks. In the battle for the future of the PC, Google just notched a win and opened the door for further gains later this year. Chromebooks topped the Mac for the number two spot in PC shipments for the first quarter of 2016, becoming the second-most popular PC platform in the US behind Microsoft's Windows. The news, made public by tech website The Verge, which quoted an analyst from research firm IDC, was shared by Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The company also laid out plans to improve its Chrome OS line of computers, announcing at its Google I/O developer conference that Android apps will be coming to the platform.

This Robot Uses Machine Learning to Take Care of Absent-Minded Humans

#artificialintelligence

There are all kinds of apps that will remind you to do things, which is great, if you remember to ask them to remind you to do things. At ICRA yesterday, researchers from Cornell and Stanford presented a project called Watch-Bot, which can independently learn your household activity patterns to provide you with helpful reminders. If you leave the milk out, or forget to turn a monitor off, or leave food in the microwave, the robot will figure out on its own that you forgot to do something and then gently remind you. Watch-Bot consists of a 3D sensor (a Kinect, in this case), a camera that can pan and tilt, a laptop, and a laser pointer. The robot was set up in a kitchen and an office, and spent a week watching people go about their business.

Python: K Nearest Neighbor

#artificialintelligence

K Nearest Neighbor (Knn) is a classification algorithm. It falls under the category of supervised machine learning. It is supervised machine learning because the data set we are using to "train" with contains results (outcomes). It is easier to show you what I mean. This data set contains 42 student test score (Score) and whether or not they were accepted (Accepted) in a college program.
