'The Old John Deere' Makes Way For New Tech With Precision Farming Platforms
Autonomous driving technology combined with sensor-driven software platforms are transforming farming. When I walked into Deere & Co.'s Intelligent Solutions Group offices in Des Moines, one of the first things I saw was a familiar graphic on the wall - a neat visualization of what it means to make a minimum viable product. That's'lean startup' talk, which isn't unusual in most of the startups and tech shops I visit. But this was John Deere, the 180-year-old maker of huge tractors and huge combines and huge harvesters – maximum viable products. I'd driven over from Chicago to learn more about "precision agriculture," which is old-fashioned, work-the-land farming, augmented with apps and other gadgets that do everything from monitor soil moisture to drive tractors.
How the internet found a better way than illegible squiggles to prove you're not a robot
The experience of squinting at distorted text, puzzling over small images, or even simply clicking on a checkbox to prove you aren't a robot could soon be over, if a new Google service takes off. The company has revealed the latest evolution of the Captcha (short, sort of, for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart), which aims to do away with any interruption at all: the new, "invisible reCaptcha" aims to tell whether a given visitor is a robot or not purely by analysing their browsing behaviour. Barring a short wait while the system does its job, a typical human visitor shouldn't have to do anything else to prove they're not a robot. It's a long way from the first Captchas, introduced to stop automated programs signing up for services like email addresses and social media accounts. The idea is simple: pick a task that a human can do easily, and a machine finds very hard, and require that task be completed before the process can be continued.

Chicago Machine Learning Venture Capital Summit DePaul University - Center for Data Mining & Predictive Analytics
On April 19th, Built@Booth, a student club at Booth, in partnership with the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, is hosting the inaugural Chicago Machine Learning Venture Capital Summit. The summit will include guest speakers from Chicago based machine learning startups including Rise Interactive, rMark Bio, and Civis Analytics. Additionally, there will be speakers from venture capitalist firms including Hyde Park Ventures, Chicago Ventures, and the Pritzker Group. The summit will also host a Pitch Competition where the winner will receive a cash prize and mentorship from experts in the machine learning community.
Fujitsu to establish a Center of Excellence in École Polytechnique
The creation of a CoE dedicated to AI on École Polytechnique campus aims at bringing new technologies and services while fostering scientific cooperation on major research fields, in particular with École Polytechnique laboratories. Research will especially focus on machine learning, deep learning and natural language processing. Going forward, leveraging the CoE's activities, Fujitsu will place particular focus on predictive analytics and other data analysis technologies that lead to solutions to customer management issues, and will further support the digital transformation of French businesses and society. In addition, the CoE will offer Fujitsu's IoT, digital marketing, security and other digital solutions to corporate customers, particularly in the retail and manufacturing fields. Contributing towards development of a pool of talents The CoE will provide opportunities to participate in actual development projects for startups housed at the Drahi X-Novation Center, where the CoE is located.
Tapping the Potential of AI in Health Data Security
The ability of artificial intelligence to look for patterns in vast volumes of data - including large collections of unstructured data, which are commonly found in the healthcare sector - is presenting new potential ways for bolstering the security of patient information, says AI expert Navin Budhiraja of outsourcing vendor Infosys. "The nature [of healthcare data], how rapidly new [challenges] are appearing and how large and complex those systems are becoming, are making the security problems very, very hard," he says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "So, how do you look at very large amounts of data - not necessarily knowing what you're looking for - and still actually try to find interesting patterns in there around who's accessing what; is their behavior expected or anomalous, and so on? I think the traditional ways of doing security, like where you have an anti-virus system or a particular way your firewall is configured because those are the best practice, are no longer applicable because of this complex IT environment," he says. "And those are exactly the kinds of challenges AI is very good at."

In 2017, that number is estimated to grow to 24.5 million devices shipped, thanks in large part to its appearance during the Super Bowl commercials.
NHS artificial intelligence app could diagnose your problems better than a human
The NHS is testing a new artificially intelligent chatbot app that it hopes will offer an alternative to the non-emergency 111 helpline. The bot will allow users to enter their symptoms and get advice immediately right on their smartphones. The idea is to offer the health advice service to ease the number of calls to 111, which may otherwise be resolved with a few simple answers from the app. The 111 helpline has been subject to criticism for unanswered calls, failing to identify serious conditions and inappropriate advice. This service is mostly manned by non medical professionals who often answer questions using a script anyway.
Why artificial intelligence is now a priority for UK fintech start-ups
Nine of top 20 UK fintech deals were completed post-referendum, with investment totalling $368 million, according to a new report by Startupbootcamp's London fintech programme in conjunction with PwC. As a testament to the strength of the UK fintech market, the report also revealed that today's British fintech start-up works on a robust model that puts customers first through an investment into technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Fintech start-ups are increasingly focusing on building smarter, faster machines as they seek to gain a better understanding of artificial intelligence and its potential to solve customer problems. This according to data compiled from hundred of start-ups and financial services companies, which also reveals that almost one in seven applications to the Startupbootcamp incubator programme in 2016 looked to build new prototypes, many of which were focused on AI and machine learning. Over the past few years, the focus on AI and machine learning has been driven by a need to further understand and develop the technology with no clear concept of how to implement it in daily life, according to the report.
Intel Acquiring Mobileye For More Than $15B In Major Move Into Automated Driving

As the automotive industry races to commercialize automated driving by the turn of the decade, the number of real power players in the space is rapidly consolidating. The latest move is Intel's acquisition of Israeli machine vision leader Mobileye for $15.3 billion. If completed, the deal may finally put Intel in a strong position in a new market after it has struggled in recent years to break into new new territory beyond its deteriorating stronghold in PC chips. Founded 1999, Mobileye is the undisputed global market leader for the image processing systems that are increasingly becoming standard equipment on new vehicles and will be essential to making self-driving vehicles work.
