Christian Rudder on OkCupid, user data, and the impending AI takeover - The Signal

#artificialintelligence

Remember those OkCupid blog posts about the mathematics of beauty, the lies people tell in online dating, and how OkCupid experiments on its users? Those were the work of Christian Rudder. Christian Rudder is the co-founder of OkCupid. He is also a founding member of celebrated indie-rock band Bishop Allen. He has his own IMDb page from roles in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and the mumblecore film Funny Haha. He is cited on the "Love" wikipedia page, and he's written massively popular blog posts at OkTrends. Two years ago he authored Dataclysm: Love, Sex, Race, and Identity–What Our Online Lives Tell Us about Our Offline Selves, the New York Times best-selling book that delved into what data tells us about who we really are.

NVIDIA Delivers DGX-1 "Supercomputer in a Box" to OpenAI

#artificialintelligence

OpenAI, a non-profit research company devoted to advancing artificial intelligence, has become one of the proud owners of a DGX-1, NVIDIA's so-called "supercomputer in a box," a server specifically designed for machine learning work. The system, which was hand-delivered to the company's headquarters in San Francisco by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, will be used to run some of OpenAI's most computationally challenging applications. More generally, the DGX-1 will be used to support the company's mission, namely to "advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return." The non-profit is being backed by Silicon Valley icons like Elon Musk and Peter Theil, and managed to attract more than a 1 billion worth of funding at the time it was founded in December 2015. The company only expects to spend a tiny fraction of that amount over the next few years.

Enhance Predictive Analytics in Your ERP with Azure Machine Learning - erpinnews

#artificialintelligence

Machine learning is in high demand, as customers are progressively looking for ways to gather insights from their data. It is at the peak of the Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2015. It uses computers to run predictive models that learn from the existing data in order to forecast future outcomes, trends, and behaviors. Overall these forecasts make the apps and devices smarter. Azure Machine Learning (Azure ML) is a powerful cloud-based predictive analytics service that makes it possible to quickly create and deploy predictive models as analytics solutions.

Donald Trump is like a biased machine learning algorithm

#artificialintelligence

A quick observation: Donald Trump is not like normal people. In particular, he doesn't have any principles to speak of, that might guide him. That doesn't mean he doesn't have a method. He does, but it's local rather than global. Instead of following some hidden but stable agenda, I would suggest Trump's goal is simply to "not be boring" at Trump rallies.

Machines v. hackers: Cybersecurity's artificial intelligence future

#artificialintelligence

According to industry estimates, the US needs about 200,000 more workers to fill current cybersecurity roles. Globally, the gap is five times higher – an estimated 1 million workers. The issue has become such a priority that President Obama made increasing the number of cybersecurity workers a key component of his multibillion-dollar Cybersecurity National Action Plan, which was introduced earlier this year. The White House said earlier this month it plans on boosting the federal cybersecurity workforce by 3,500 new hires by year's end. But as businesses compete for scarce cybersecurity talent and policymakers weigh remedies for the digital security worker shortage, the ground underneath the profession is shifting.

Data Science Open Source Book

#artificialintelligence

Hi! Well finally there is the first release of this project: An open source book which will hopefully contain some useful resources for those who want to learn some data analysis/machine learning. This release covers a little of data preparation, data profiling, selecting best variables (dataviz), assessing model performance, and coming soon a case study using decision trees.

Artificial Intelligence: Navy Works on Teaching Robots How to Behave

#artificialintelligence

The rise of artificial intelligence has long stoked fears of killer robots like the "Terminator," and early versions of military automatons are already in the battlefield. Now the Navy is looking into how it can teach machines to do the right thing. "We've been looking at different ways that we can have people interact with autonomous systems," Marc Steinberg, an Office of Naval Research manager, said in a phone interview this month. The Navy is funding a slew of projects at universities and institutes that look at how to train such systems, including stopping robots from harming people. In 1979, a Ford autoworker in Michigan became the first person killed by a robot when he was struck in the head by the arm of a 1-ton production-line machine, according to Guinness World Records. More recently, police in Dallas used a robot to deliver a bomb that killed the shooter who opened fire on officers at a Black Lives Matter protest.

Logz.io Harnesses Artificial Intelligence to Mimic How the Human Brain Looks at Data

#artificialintelligence

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL and NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - August 16, 2016) - Logz.io, the log analysis company that offers the open-source ELK Stack as a cloud service, today released Cognitive Insights . This new analytics solution is powered by artificial intelligence that identifies critical events in IT environments before they cause further damage to the bottom line. With the growing amount of machine-generated Big Data within organizations, it is unrealistic to expect human beings to look at every piece of information. This causes most companies to face the challenge of detecting critical events in their increasingly complex IT environments early enough in order to take corrective actions. Cognitive Insights proactively alerts IT managers to problems before they outwardly affect the the business.

The system takes advantage of Wipro Holmes Artificial Intelligence Platform, to offer cognitive enhancements to issue assignment and tickets handling. These enhancements help reduce the learning curve and improve accuracy, lead times, costs and the overall user experience. The platform supports a work force of 170,000 employees spread across the globe.

Teaching machines to direct traffic through deep reinforcement learning

#artificialintelligence

Rush hour--the dreaded time of day when traffic conditions seem bent on making you late. As your car slowly creeps in line behind countless others stuck at a stop light, you think to yourself, "Why aren't these lights changing faster?" Traffic control scientists have long tried to solve this signaling problem. Unfortunately, the complexity of traffic situations makes the job extremely hard. A recent study suggests that machines can learn how to plan traffic signals just right to reduce wait times and make traffic queues shorter.
