It can make the interaction mit machines more human and integrate it flawlessly in our daily lives. But is there a flip side, will AI be the end of the design and designer as we know them? Tech giants such as Google, Facebook, IBM, Microsoft and Amazon not only proclaimed artificial intelligence as the strategic priority that will determine the future of their organizations, but have successively announced the achievement of new milestones. What has made these milestones exceptional is that instead allowing these new advancements to influence only their own products, these companies have made their successful developments available to all other organizations for use and integration into their respective products. And as AI is being integrated into more and more products, it will also influence the way we think about customer experience and user interfaces.
Facebook is giving away the software it uses to understand objects in photos
Facebook is open sourcing a set of computer vision software tools that can identify both the variety and the shape of objects within photos. The tools, developed by the Facebook AI Research (FAIR) team, are called DeepMask, SharpMask, and MultiPathNet, and all three work in tandem to help break down and contextualize the contents of images. These technologies, though not in active use in consumer Facebook products right now, are similar to the software the company uses to describe photos to blind users, a feature it calls "automatic alternative text" that launched back in April. DeepMask and SharpMask are more experimental research projects and focus on what the FAIR team calls segmentation. While human beings can discern the various elements of a photograph in mere seconds, the process is much harder for computers, which perceive pixels as a series of number values corresponding to changes in color.

Even now, we're still struggling to come up with an adequate definition of the term "artificial intelligence" which isn't surprising when you consider that after thousands of years, humans can't even decide on a definition for "intelligence." Put one way, artificial intelligence is a term given to computer systems that attempt to simulate human intelligence and learning. But even that definition is too big to wrap your head around. To simplify it, you can break artificial intelligence into two categories: Strong (or broad) AI, and weak (or narrow) AI.

SILICON has been making our computers work for almost half a century. Whether designed for graphics or number crunching, all information processing is done using a million-strong horde of tiny logic gates made from element number 14. But silicon's time may soon be up. Moore's law – the prophecy which dictates that the number of silicon transistors on microprocessors doubles every two years – is grinding to a halt because there is a limit to how many can be squeezed on a chip. The machine-learning boom is another problem. The amount of energy silicon-based computers use is set to soar as they crunch more of the massive data sets that algorithms in this field require.
