The rise and rise of intelligent machines Information Age
AI, and the branch of this discipline called deep learning, crashed the public consciousness on March 9 when Google DeepMind's AlphaGo program beat South Korean champion Lee Se-dol at ancient Chinese game Go. Since then, barely a week has gone by without a fresh breakthrough – or scare story. True AI implies a change in the relationship between machine and human – from predictable task worker reliant on our instructions, to a system which has the capacity to surprise and surpass us. For many, the loss of control inherent in this change is alarming. Hal and Skynet are suddenly too close for comfort.
How chatbots will help local business across the world
Now, the big brands are starting to leverage chatbots to promote their products. According to a recent survey carried out by Facebook IQ, 63 percent of consumers are using messaging apps (in this case, Facebook Messenger) to contact companies, find information, and buy products. According to the Facebook survey, 67 percent expect to message businesses more frequently over the next two years. Currently, businesses can build bots that carry out simple tasks, answer simple questions, and help with the steps laid out above.
Computers Can Sense Sarcasm? Yeah, Right

Expert calls for long-term blueprint for China's AI industry - Xinhua

BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tan Tieniu, a top expert in China's artificial intelligence (AI) sector, on Friday suggested creating a plan to guide the country's AI research and development in the next decade or longer. China should independently develop an AI innovation system, with a focus on core technology, high-end equipment and applications, basic theories and facilities in the AI sector, said Tan, vice president of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence. By doing so, China could have a world-leading AI industry by 2025, said Tan, also vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the two-day 2016 China Conference on Artificial Intelligence (CCAI 2016), which will conclude on Saturday.

Japanese research center Riken and twenty companies have created a joint platform to develop applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the fields of medicine, industry or infrastructure, announced today the Nikkei newspaper. Research Center of Advanced Intelligence Integrated opens on September 1st in Tokyo, and will include the participation of Japan's leading automotive, Toyota Motor and other tech giants including Sony and NEC, among other large companies and " start-up "Japanese. Is "Artificial Intelligence" Dead? Long Live Deep Learning?!?
Deep learning has achieved some very impressive accomplishments of late. I won't review them here, but chances are you already know about them anyhow. Given these high-profile successes, one could forgive the uninitiated (be they laymen or tech-savvy individuals) for the casual confounding of terms such as "artificial intelligence" and "deep learning," among others. It seems these 2 terms, specifically, are moving increasingly close to one another, and the further one is removed from research, the less easy it likely is to understand the nuance. Given the recent interest in the employ of deep neural networks and other machine learning technologies in business, as well as other sectors, non-technical folks have heightened interest in the differentiation of, and deep understanding of (pun intended), these technologies for practical purpose.
Nigel Artificial Intelligence Learns Common Sense via Observation - DATAVERSITY
The release continues, "Kimera's engineers wanted to validate how the Nigel single algorithm AGI learns, so in the first test of the currently private beta, users were instructed to go to the movies with their Nigel-enabled smartphones. There was no special programming used on Nigel, only some guidance provided to beta testers, ensuring a fully unsupervised learning test for the technology. Nigel was able to observe that a movie theater is a type of location, and that people share common behaviors with respect to their phones when they visit this type of location. Through these observations, Nigel learned to proactively dim screens and silence smartphones when people enter a cinema."
