Meet Octobot, a soft-bodied robot that moves like an octopus
Our future robot overlords never looked so squishy. A team of scientists led out of Harvard University have managed to build an entirely soft robot -- one that's inspired by an octopus. The octobot, described this week in the journal Nature, could pave the way toward more effective soft robots that could be used in search and rescue, exploration and to more safely interact with humans. "The octobot is a minimal system designed to demonstrate our integrated design and fabrication strategy," the study authors wrote, "which may serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots." Traditionally, robots have been seen as stiff, angular entities, made of metal and other rigid materials (think C3PO in Star Wars).

Mount Sinai Establishes Pathology Center with Focus on Machine Learning Healthcare Informatics Magazine Health IT
Mount Sinai's Department of Pathology at the Icahn School of Medicine has established the Center for Computational and Systems Pathology, with the goal to more accurately classify diseases and guide treatment using computer vision and machine learning techniques. Mount Sinai officials say the New York-based center will look to "revolutionize pathology practice, using advanced computer science and mathematical techniques coupled with cutting-edge microscope technology and artificial intelligence." The Center for Computational and Systems Pathology will be a hub for the development of new diagnostic, predictive, and prognostic tests and will partner with Mount Sinai-based "Precise Medical Diagnostics" (Precise MDTM), which has been under development for more than three years by a team of physicians, scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and programmers. Mount Sinai's Department of Pathology processes more than 80 million tests a year, making it the largest department of its kind in the country, its officials said. Meanwhile, Precise MD is developing new approaches to characterizing an individual's cancer by combining multiple data sources and analyzing them with mathematical algorithms, offering an alternative to standard approaches.

We can do exactly the same kind of work we would do in academia, including working on fundamental research or more applied research as we see fit.
