Artificial Intelligence will rule Hollywood (intelligently) in 2015, with a slew of both iconic and new robots hitting the screen. From the Turing-bashing "Ex Machina" to old friends R2-D2 and C-3PO, and new enemies like the Avengers' Ultron, sentient robots will demonstrate a number of human and superhuman traits on-screen. But real-life robots may be just as thrilling. In this five-part series Live Science looks at these made-for-the-movies advances in machine intelligence. The Turing test, a foundational method of AI evaluation, shapes the plot of April's sci-fi/psychological thriller "Ex Machina."

With the goal of precision decisions, successful AI projects require more than just great algorithms or access to data scientists. The seven success factors for AI foreshadow a world where limited players can deliver AI smart services.

The impact of AI technologies will go far beyond virtual assistants. These technologies are enabling a fundamental shift in how businesses operate. Just as the internet and mobile connectivity have enabled the world to have access to information at any time and any place, AI technologies will raise the bar for engagement with customers. People will expect meaningful, two-way dialogues. They will expect companies to use what they know about them already, and what they have given those companies permission to discover, to refine and complete their imprecise instructions.

Data has been the focal point of technology, machine-learning and artificial intelligence for decades now. While technology has evolved, so has the need for data. As per estimates from American multinational corporation Computer Sciences, we are expected to consume 44 times more data in 2020 than we did a decade ago. THE East Japan Railway Company, also known as JR East, is considering the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to make their already-impeccable customer service even better. The AI technology would be used to help call center operators respond to inquiries more efficiently, with a system that turns audio from phone conversations into text, analyzes them and then throws up answers for the operators to use. According to the Nikkei Asian Review, a pilot study is planned for the fall to test the system, which in time will learn which responses are suitable for operators. The AI system will also learn specific railway terminologies, acronyms and new words as it creates a database of words in order to generate better responses to customer queries. There will also be JR East "envisions robots" answering commuter's questions at stations – this potentially refers to the company's AI information robots, which have been in place since 2007.

Artificial intelligence pops up as a buzzword every few years, but it has never moved beyond novelty status. This time, though, it is here to stay, and startups are poised to drive the AI economy forward. Newcomer ROSS Intelligence, for example, has gained law firm clients by developing a fully automated AI "lawyer" capable of supporting the legal research needs of large offices. Developed on IBM's Watson, ROSS is well on its way to becoming a fixture in the legal industry, automating tasks that could take days or weeks for humans to complete. Popular business messaging app Slack -- another startup -- is working on incorporating AI to act as an intelligent personal assistant capable of talking back and answering questions that have been asked before, saving companies time.

Machine learning (ML) is all the hotness right now. There is literally a new story every week about a complicated problem that was solved using ML. Most of my coworkers and friends in the industry have expressed interest in learning about ML, but have not been able gain a foot hold. I believe the problem is that the current books and online classes are overwhelming; scaring away students before they have a chance to build up confidence. The problem I had when I started learning ML was that the tutorials insisted on teaching the math that is fundamental for machine learning to work.
