New Crowdsource app lets you work for Google for free
Google Crowdsource lets you help the company with language translation, handwriting recognition and map translation accuracy. Google has a formidable artificial intelligence team working on everything from photo recognition to email spam filtering. The online giant on Monday released a new Android app called Crowdsource that lets you contribute your own suggestions to language translation, handwriting recognition and street sign transcription. "Each microtask takes no more than five to 10 seconds, so knock away a few the next time you find yourself with a few moments to kill," Google suggests in the app description. "Every time you use it, you know that you've made the internet a better place for your community."
Here Are the Winners of the First Beauty Contest Judged by Artificial Intelligence
Earlier this summer, humans submitted their selfies and computer scientists submitted their algorithms to be competitors and judges in the first beauty contest judged by artificial intelligence. The six AI judges were trained to evaluate wrinkles, face symmetry, skin color and several other parameters before choosing men and women winners in various age groups ranging from 18 to 69. The photos, which people submitted through an app, had to show the person free of makeup, facial hair and sunglasses (with a facial hair exception being made for those 65 and older). A total of 60,000 people submitted their selfies, and the winners have been chosen. Alex Zhavoronkov, CSO of Youth Laboratories and CEO of Insilico Medicine, the two companies behind Beauty.AI, said he was surprised by the results.
Zuckerberg may debut 'Jarvis' AI assistant next month

SAN FRANCISCO - Next month, Mark Zuckerberg hopes to offer the world a glimpse at his pet project, a face- and voice-recognition system that allows the Facebook CEO to command his home environment much like the fictional Tony Stark orders around Jarvis in Iron Man. And his wife, Priscilla Chan, might not be thrilled. "I got it to this point where now I can control the lights, I can control the gates, I can control the temperature -- much to the chagrin of my wife, who now cannot control the temperature because it is programmed to only listen to my voice," Zuckerberg told a packed audience in Rome, the CEO's latest town hall Q and A session. The artificial intelligence software powering the system - part of a personal challenge Zuckerberg set for himself earlier in the year - is a by-product of Facebook's strategic mission to improve the social network's ability to better identify faces in photos and videos that are relevant to users.

I'd want a company AT LEAST AS compelling an investment as Amazon… tough to come across. An analysis of Facebook and Alphabet's Google by research firm Innography shows a surge in AI patent filings that began in 2010. Alphabet currently has more than 3,000 AI patents that are active or pending government approval.
Facebook gives away 22 more GPU servers for A.I. research
Facebook today named the recipients of 22 servers that Facebook designed specifically for artificial intelligence (A.I.) research. This comes after Facebook's introduction of the giveaway program for academic researchers back in February. University departments in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are getting the machines, the designs of which Facebook open-sourced in December. The servers can support as many as eight graphics processing units (GPUs), which are often used to train artificial neural networks (ANNs) with lots of data. After being trained, the ANNs can make inferences on new data.
Intel Unveils Plans for Artificial-Intelligence Chips
Intel Corp. signaled it wants a bigger role in artificial intelligence, revealing plans to modify a line of chips to target a fast-growing market turning into a battleground for technology suppliers. The company told technology developers Wednesday that it plans next year to deliver a new version of the Xeon Phi processor--a product line previously targeted at scientific applications--with added features designed to accelerate tasks associated with what Silicon Valley calls artificial intelligence. Intel said the technology will help accelerate a technique called deep learning, increasingly used for tasks such as interpreting speech, identifying objects in photos and piloting autonomous vehicles. Intel's Xeon processors already are a fixture in data centers, and have a role in nearly all deep-learning tasks carried out there. But some users also install auxiliary processors for artificial-intelligence tasks, notably chips called GPUs that rival Nvidia Corp. has long sold for videogames.
Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg hopes to show off his Jarvis-like home AI next month
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is living at least a few years out ahead of anyone reading this post – the founding executive told an audience in Rome (via Verge) today that he hopes to demonstrate his home's artificial intelligence system, which controls things like air conditioning, lighting and more based on things like face and voice recognition. Zuckerberg's computerized domestic assistant was his "personal challenge" for this year, an annual goal the CEO sets for himself and makes public. Past challenges have included learning Mandarin, and the more modest goal of reading two books every month, which for someone with Zuck's free time, might actually have been more difficult to achieve than creating a non-destructive HAL 9000 for his sole personal use. Here's why his challenge this year isn't necessarily a personal Waterloo for Zuckerberg: he has the help of "all these Facebook engineers who are doing all this awesome AI work in speech recognition, face recognition," according to the Q&A, which happened live just a few hours ago.
