These improvements come at price though: system complexity grows quadratically as the number of services increases. Operating systems consisting of many moving parts under near constant change will quickly become untenable for human beings. In this talk, we'll explore the increasing automated field of operations and explore what the future might hold when machine learning and AI techniques are brought to bear on the problem of systems operations. Amazon Poaches Artificial Intelligence Executive From eBay

Amazon.com Inc. AMZN 1.95 % recently poached an artificial-intelligence expert from rival eBay Inc., EBAY 1.02 % the latest move by the retail giant to strengthen its ability to quickly determine what users want. Hassan Sawaf joined Amazon as its director of artificial intelligence in Palo Alto, Calif., at its A9 labs, according to his LinkedIn page, with the goal of improving "the user experience for users of Amazon's search capability across all products and businesses." An eBay spokeswoman confirmed Mr. Sawaf left the company. Amazon and Mr. Sawaf didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. These companies and others are pouring money into artificial intelligence, which is expected to run everything from automobiles to houses in the future.

I've just finished watching Entrepreneur First's sixth cohort's Demo Day Demo in London. The event, held at Facebook's UK HQ, saw 21 newly outed startups pitch their wares on stage to investors, press and other actors in the European tech scene. But before I give a run down of the presenting companies, including our top 3 picks, here's a quick reminder of how EF works and what has made it the new darling of the UK startup community. Founded back in 2011 by Alice Bentinck and Matt Clifford, the so-called "talent first" investor targets the best technical graduates in Europe and beyond to put them through a six-month program where they form teams and in turn found startups. This includes financial support in the form of a monthly stipend for living costs while founders find their co-founders and decide on an idea.

Watson powered headphones could change the way you act with your co-workers

Soon Watson will be in your ear. Hearables company Bragi and IBM are partnering to yield headphones like the Dash with IBM's Watson IoT platform to change the way you interact, communicate and collaborate with your co-workers. So, what you say to your teammates could be translated by Watson, with additional instructions and smart notifications. Also, your superiors could know about your location and safety by the headphones, rather than depending on the cameras all the time. "Hearables will transform the way we work and have a tremendous impact on the business processes of the future," said Nikolaj Hviid, CEO, and founder of Bragi.

I'm going to get it out of the way right at the start. Having watched the trailer, I want to go and see this movie. This trailer tells us absolutely nothing about what the movie's about, but every cut pulls me in more. Until the guy starts talking at the end of the trailer, I've no idea that the movie is "an AI horror thriller". But these are the kind of trailers I grew up with.


Report: Artificial intelligence to transform urban cities

Big urban cities in North America will be transformed by 2030 by artificial intelligence technologies, as self-driving cars, package-delivering robots and surveillance drones become commonplace, according to a new report. The report, produced by an international panel of artificial intelligence experts convened by Stanford University, takes an in-depth look at how artificial intelligence is already impacting society and how it will continue to evolve over the next 14 years. It is the first report in a planned series of studies looking at artificial intelligence, or AI, that will continue for at least 100 years. "Until now, most of what is known about AI comes from science fiction books and movies," said Peter Stone, a computer science professor at the University of Texas who chaired the panel that produced the report. "This study provides a realistic foundation to discuss how AI technologies are likely to affect society."


Intel to Buy Semiconductor Startup Movidius

Intel Corp. INTC 0.51 % said it would acquire Movidius, a maker of semiconductors for drones and other autonomous machines, a move that would bolster Intel's artificial intelligence portfolio amid its desire to become a bigger player in the space. Terms of the transaction weren't disclosed. The deal, subject to certain closing conditions, was announced in blog posts Monday. Movidius specializes in computer vision technology that allows machines to understand their surroundings and navigate accordingly. Intel said the acquisition would bring on new algorithms and low-power chips, technology that would accelerate its own initiatives.

Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) [1], and both IGT and T2DM are associated with increase in cardio-cerebrovascular related mortality [2, 3]. The Diabetes Epidemiology: Collaborative Analysis of Diagnostic Criteria in Europe (DECODE) [4] study showed a tight correlation between IGT and cardiovascular mortality, and IGT is a known risk factor for early-stage atherosclerosis [5]. In the Actos Now for Prevention of Diabetes (ACT NOW) study, it was shown that pharmacotherapy with pioglitazone in IGT subjects resulted in reduced development of T2DM [6] as well as reduced progression of atherosclerosis [7]. Therefore, identification of IGT subjects who are at risk for rapid atherosclerosis progression, and understanding the important characteristics that affect the identification process, may be beneficial in risk stratification and early intervention. Machine learning (ML) methods have been widely used to learn complex relationships or patterns from data to make accurate predictions [8] and are usually applied in the setting of massive datasets ("big data").
