Nvidia: Eight bits ought to be enough for anybody ... doing AI
Analysis Nvidia has designed a couple of new Tesla processors for AI applications – the P4 and the P40 – and is talking up their 8-bit math performance. The 16nm FinFET GPUs use Nv's Pascal architecture and follow on from the P100 launched in June. The P4 fits on a half-height, half-length PCIe card for scale-out servers, while the beefier P40 has its eyes set on scale-up boxes. The new pair are aimed mainly at inference work, ie: you give the hardware a trained AI model, some suitable software, and input data like video from a camera or sound from a microphone, and it spits out decisions, speech-to-text translations, object classifications, and so on. We've reached the stage now where deep-learning models are so elaborate – having being constructed on powerful systems using mountains of training data – that the inference side has to catch up: you need a decent number-crunching processor to push information through a complex neural network to make decisions in real time.

Baidu Venture to bet on AI and VR firms ? Business
Baidu Inc said on Tuesday that it has launched its first venture capital firm focusing on artificial intelligence - the Chinese online search behemoth's latest effort to stake out a spot in the burgeoning technology field. Called Baidu Venture, the new company will focus on early-stage projects in artificial intelligence and other next-generation technologies, such as augmented reality and virtual reality, according to a statement from Nasdaq-listed Baidu. Robin Li, Baidu's chief executive officer, is the chairman of the venture capital firm. For its first stage, the firm is equipped with an initial investment fund of US 200 million. Baidu said in its statement that the company would be an independent entity, separate from the company's existing investment and acquisition team, so that it could "use an innovative evaluation mechanism to speed up the decision-making process and make investments more efficient."

BOSTON: Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered bots will become the next interface, shaping our interactions with the applications and devices we rely on and Microsoft's latest solutions are set to change the way HP interacts with its customers and partners, Indian-born Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said. "Bots are now learning in human context and the relevant thing for us is to make them intelligent as we learn from customers' experience. Our solutions are going to give HP a 360-degree view of its customer services," Nadella announced at HP's Global Partner Conference (GPC) 2016 at the Boston Conference and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) here. HP announced a six-year agreement to deploy Microsoft Dynamics customer relation management (CRM) online in order to enhance collaboration across marketing, sales and service operations. With Dynamics, as well as Azure, Office 365 and other Microsoft Cloud solutions, HP has invested in the sales and service collaboration platform to deliver a seamless sales experience for customers and partners.

Hayles: In my view, machines are "real things," so I don't see an engagement with machines as in any way antithetical to contemporary reality. I do think it is important not to elide the very real differences that exist between humans and machines, especially the different embodiments that humans and machines have. Certainly I think that Albert is correct in insisting that virtual reality will never displace the three-dimensional world in which our perceptual systems evolved; the richness, diversity, and spontaneity of this immensely complex environment makes even the most sophisticated computer simulation look like a stick world by comparison. Where I differ, perhaps, is in seeing the situation not as a dichotomy between the real and virtual but rather as space in which the natural and the artificial are increasing entwined. I foresee a proliferation of what Bruno Latour calls "quasi-objects," hybrid objects produced by a collaboration between nature and culture--genetically engineered plants and animals, humans who have had gene thereapy, humans with cybernetic implants and explants, intelligent agent systems with evolutionary programs who have evolved to the point where they can converse in a convincing fashion with humans, and so forth.
Robots can perform surgery inside your eyeballs
Doctors at Oxford University made medical history recently by successfully completing the first robot-assisted intraocular surgery. Robert MacLaren, Professor of Ophthalmology at the university, and his team managed to gently peel off a 1/1000th millimeter membrane from the inside of a patient's eye. To do so, the team relied on a cutting-edge medical device known as the Robotic Retinal Dissection Device, or R2D2. The R2D2, developed by Dutch medical robotics firm Preceyes BV, is designed to perform keyhole surgery, entering and exiting the eyeball through a single, sub-millimeter hole. What's more, it's built to be exceedingly steady, especially given the tight tolerances within which it works.
NTT firm taps AI to work romance hotline
NTT Resonant Inc., the operator of Japanese web portal goo, said this week it has started a service using artificial intelligence to provide love-life advice. The corevo AI developed by the NTT group will answer questions related to love affairs asked through Oshiete goo, a user-driven question-and-answer community site. By analyzing more than 30 million questions and answers previously submitted by users, corevo will find out appropriate advice and convey it with human-like expressions. AI technology has "strength in quickly providing different answers customers are seeking," said Masahiro Wakai, president and chief executive officer of NTT Resonant. Wakai said the company intended to utilize the technology in areas other than love.

Why DARPA Needs AI to Defeat Enemy Radar
Modern radar and communications systems can subtly and quickly change their character, making them harder for U.S. aircraft and other platforms to jam or spoof. That reality is prompting DARPA to lead industry teams to apply artificial intelligence to electronic warfare. The U.S. military developed its current approach to EW in the 1960s and 70s when it studied enemy systems to identify their vulnerabilities. It then came up with countermeasures to disrupt them, which went into a sort of tactical EW "playbook." "Cognitive EW is being developed to deal with the unexpected."
