3 Executive Insights for Application of Artificial Intelligence in eCommerce

At the recent VentureBeat MobileBeat conference on July 13, a panel of executives assembled to discuss the impact of emerging technologies on the future of commerce. Three executives from high-profile companies - Holger Luedorf, senior vice president of Business Development at Postmates; Nichele Lindstrom, director of Digital Marketing at Whole Foods Market; and Eric Moujaes, senior director of Global Digital Product at McDonald's - chimed in and gave their insights on what they believe to be the most overhyped and promising technologies that will impact commerce in the near term. Their perspectives fell on the spectrum of the slightly surprising (drones will not be the future delivery vehicle of choice) as well as in alignment with current'hot' trends (chat bots look to be in like flynn). All three executives' opinions shed light on the potential future of our role as consumers and on businesses as providers in a'brave new world'. With companies like Amazon and Google forecasting the use of drones for delivery (any day now), people may be expecting these unmanned aerial vehicles to be a serious part of the future of commerce, but McDonald's Eric Moujaes believes differently.

Artificial intelligence is making fast progress by the day. A report by Forrester indicates that in the next five years, robots and intelligent agents will eliminate 6% of jobs. The intelligent agents include chat bots and digital assistants like Alexa of Amazon, Siri of Apple, GoogleNow of Alphabet, and Messenger bots of Facebook. They will find more ground in developing robots and intelligent agents which learn better from users and handle more complex scenarios than they do now.

International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) announced three new servers built for cognitive computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These are three buzzwords for essentially the same thing: computer systems that learn how to solve more and more complex real-world problems and understand the world like humans. The automated machine learning technology of Watson, IBM's cognitive computing software platform, is at the forefront of AI research, but there are practical spin-offs that can already be used in advanced medical applications and commercial applications built on the Watson Developer Cloud. The new servers are part of IBM's Linux specialized server portfolio co-developed with members of the OpenPOWER Foundation. The OpenPOWER ecosystem includes a wide variety of computing solutions that use IBM's open POWER processor technology.


Robots will eliminate 6% of all US jobs by 2021, report says

By 2021, robots will have eliminated 6% of all jobs in the US, starting with customer service representatives and eventually truck and taxi drivers. That's just one cheery takeaway from a report released by market research company Forrester this week. These robots, or intelligent agents, represent a set of AI-powered systems that can understand human behavior and make decisions on our behalf. Current technologies in this field include virtual assistants like Alexa, Cortana, Siri and Google Now as well as chatbots and automated robotic systems. For now, they are quite simple, but over the next five years they will become much better at making decisions on our behalf in more complex scenarios, which will enable mass adoption of breakthroughs like self-driving cars.

To be clear, the monkey didn't know it was copying Shakespeare, and it had no deep thoughts about Hamlet's famous monologue. Monkey J and its colleague, Monkey L, were both trained to use their neural implants to move a cursor over a computer screen, hitting circles as they turned green. Stanford University researchers placed letters on those targets to simulate the typing task. So to tap out the line from Hamlet, first the "T" circle was illuminated, then the "O," and so on. Bottlenose Founder Wants to Automate the Work of Data Scientists

Automating the work of data scientists will dramatically lower the cost of artificial intelligence and make it easier for business people without advanced tech skills to make use of the latest in business intelligence, says entrepreneur and investor Nova Spivack. His latest startup, Bottlenose, released a new platform on Tuesday that Mr. Spivack says is a step in that direction. "We saw a lot of technology jump from academic to commercial areas. There is more data and more capability with which to do analytics, but data scientists are increasingly scarce," Mr. Spivack said in an interview. "We are not producing enough data scientists, and you can't create enough of these people no matter how hard you try." Making matters worse, it takes time for credentialed data scientists to gain enough sufficient experience to be fully functional on the job, he said.

Where Google is moving towards lifelike AI, Hiroshi Ishiguro's Alter is moving towards embracing the inhuman. Google's AI can dream up its own surreal images and beat a human champion at the ancient game of Go. Now it can realistically mimic human speech, including the nonspeech sounds the mouth and respiratory system make when a human talks. The system is called WaveNet, a neural network that generates raw audio waveforms, and it's uncannily lifelike. We do have text-to-speech generators, and they're very useful, particularly for blind people.
