The future of identification authentication technology may, indeed, lie in brainwave scanning. It is a promising field, and its potential impact on daily life is intriguing, to say the least. Now, a pair of cybersecurity researchers from Texas Tech University claimed to have discovered another use for the technology. Abdul Serwadda and Richard Matovu created a machine-learning system that compared two sets of EEG brainwave scans, one belonging to a group of identified alcoholics and the other from anonymous subjects. Using the machine, Serwadda and Matovu were able to correctly identify 25 percent of those people from the second group who identified themselves as alcoholics. We know the brain signal is so rich in information," says Serwadda.

Some customer questions are pretty simple to answer, and many businesses strive to do so with FAQ documents on their websites. The idea is to keep service agents free to handle more complicated queries. The reality is that unless an inquiring customer knows exactly what phrases or "keywords" to search for, it might be tough to find the information they need. Artificial intelligence software firm Inbenta this week raised another 12 million to develop a solution to that shortcoming--in the form of software that translates customer questions into terms that a site's search algorithms should find it easier to understand. For example, if someone types "Can I bring my Doberman to this hotel?" Inbenta's software "knows" that person might be interested in the company's policies regarding domestic animals.

NASA use space technology for cancer research

The agency has been in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), allowing a portion of the space station for medical studies, including cancer research. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) collaborated with the City of Hope, a center for cancer research and treatment in California, to explore carbon nanotubes for the treatment of brain tumor. Last Sep. 6, JPL and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which is part of NIH, renewed their research partnership through 2021. "From a NASA standpoint, there are significant opportunities to develop new data science capabilities that can support both the mission of exploring space and cancer research using common methodological approaches," said Dan Crichton, head of JPL's Center for Data Science and Technology.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invested billions of dollars in space exploration. This investment has come back to Earth to benefit the medical community. NASA's complex machine learning algorithms used to analyze the astrophysical similarities among galaxies such as NGC 3718 and NGC 3729 are now used for studying cancer. The algorithms improve the extraction of patterns from complex data sets and help in the analysis of cancer. NASA's involvement in cancer research is not new, though.

On the cusp of an AI revolution

Over the last 30 years, consumers have reaped the benefits of dramatic technological advances. In many countries, most people now have in their pockets a personal computer more powerful than the mainframes of the 1980s. The Atari 800XL computer that I developed games on when I was in high school was powered by a microprocessor with 3,500 transistors; the computer running on my iPhone today has two billion transistors. Back then, a gigabyte of storage cost US100,000 and was the size of a refrigerator; today it's basically free and is measured in millimeters. Even with these massive gains, we can expect still faster progress as the entire planet – people and things – becomes connected.


NSA and Cyber Command urged to split, A.I. to become part of U.S. cyber strategy

President Obama may be urged to split the joint leadership of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command in favor of two distinct forces for cyberespionage and cyberwarfare as NSA officials announce that artificial intelligence will be a future part of U.S. cyber strategy. The potential move will be urged by the Pentagon and intelligence community and is driven by a sense that the two missions are fundamentally different as military hackers and cyberspies shouldn't compete to use the same networks and the job of leading both missions is too big for one person, according to the Washington Post. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper are both reportedly pressing for the split, with Carter seeking to build Cyber Command into a full-fledged fighting force that has its own network accesses to conduct attacks, the post said while Clapper supports the idea in hopes that it will reduce tension over which force gets to use the networks . Last week, NSA leader Admiral Michael Rogers told an audience at the Intelligence & National Security Summit that ''he believes the two organizations should remain aligned but separate. In other news, earlier this week, Rogers told Congress that artificial intelligence will play a large role in the U.S. cyberspace strategy.


Intel buys computer vision startup Movidius as it looks to build up its RealSense platform

Today, the company announced that it is acquiring the computer vision startup behind Google's Project Tango 3D-sensor tech, Movidius. Movidius has seen a great deal of interest in its radically low-powered computer vision chipset, signing deals with major device makers, including Google, Lenovo and DJI. At its recent IDF developers conference, Intel made major announcements related to its depth-sensing RealSense platform, including a new virtual reality platform called Project Alloy, feature upgrades to its autonomous drone piloting and other initiatives aimed at enhancing computer vision in consumer and enterprise devices. Movidius gives Intel an in to get its sensor tech on low-powered mobile devices.
