In this post, we take a tour of the most popular machine learning algorithms. It is useful to tour the main algorithms in the field to get a feeling of what methods are available. There are so many algorithms available and it can feel overwhelming when algorithm names are thrown around and you are expected to just know what they are and where they fit. I want to give you two ways to think about and categorize the algorithms you may come across in the field.


ITESM graduates develop innovative exoskeleton that uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality

Exoskeletons are mechanical structures applied externally to the body and its functions is the improve movement, hold the body of people suffering from an injury or increase physical strength to lift heavy objects. To improve and extend the functionality of these devices, graduates of Technology Monterrey (ITESM) develop an exoskeleton that works with artificial intelligence and is made up of several independent parts to rehabilitate specific body parts as joints through augmented reality. The device acquires motion with brain or muscle signals and measures simultaneously translated by the apparatus noninvasively. Dr. Ernesto Rodrรญguez Leal, professor at the ITESM, explained that the device can acquire motion by a headband containing electrodes themselves are responsible for receiving and calculate the electroencephalographic signals emitted by the brain and electromyographic produced by muscles. These electrical impulses go to a microprocessor which makes the task of sorting and translate the signals that move the device using artificial intelligence algorithms.


IBM to collaborate with MIT to develop AI-based vision systems

IBM Research is to collaborate with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop machine-vision systems. The new IBM-MIT Laboratory for Brain-inspired Multimedia Machine Comprehension's (BM3C) will work on the development of cognitive computing systems that can emulate the human ability to comprehend visual and audio inputs. BM3C will address technical challenges around both pattern recognition and prediction methods in the field of machine vision that are currently impossible for machines alone to accomplish. For example, online retailer Ocado has talked to Computing about the need for such systems in order to automate the packing of supermarket items for delivery so that potatoes are packed before tomatoes. The BMC3 collaboration will bring together brain, cognitive, and computer science specialists to conduct research in the field of unsupervised machine understanding of audio-visual streams of data, using insights from next-generation models of the brain to inform advances in machine vision.

This month Stanford launched a 100-year study of AI (AI100) with a report: Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030. The 16 member study panel issuing the report sees increasingly useful applications of AI, with potentially profound positive impacts on our society and economy over the next decade. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the most important technology we're developing this decade. Broadly, AI is the ability of a computer to understand your question, to search its vast memory banks, and to give you the best, most accurate, answer. AI is the ability of a computer to process a vast amount of information for you, make decisions, and take (and/or advise you to take) appropriate action. You may know early versions of AI as Siri on your iPhone, or IBM's Watson supercomputer. Report: Big data, AI hold "greatest promise" for healthcare tech โ€“ MassDevice

Big data and artificial intelligence will have the greatest impact in the health-tech industry in the year ahead, according to a survey released yesterday. The survey, performed by Silicon Valley Bank, polled 122 founders, execs and investors in health care technology companies about the biggest challenges, most promising technology and biggest growth sectors in the industry for the coming year. The most promising technology for the sector was utilization of big data, with 46% of of responders ranking it number 1, closely followed by artificial intelligence, with 35%. Consumer, patient and client adoption was the biggest challenge reported by polled individual for the industry, with 37% placing it at the top. Thirty four percent reported that regulation was the largest challenge for the sector.


Nvidia Debuts New Graphics Processors For Artificial Intelligence To Compete With Intel

Nvidia Corp. debuted two new graphics processors for systems and computers that use artificial intelligence putting them directly in competition with chips giant Intel. Nvidia hopes that its two new graphic processors would be utilized by tech companies in their products that run artificial intelligence software like smartphones, driverless cars and smart homes, according to a report by Bloomberg. The chipmaker, which is the leading company in video gaming graphics, released a new set of graphics chips for running software that "makes split-second decisions needed when everything from phones to cars to internet search engines respond to inputs such as speech, images and moving objects," according to Bloomberg. Nvidia calls the new chip "Tesla P4 chip" and is designed for servers used in massive data centers that process big data like Facebook, "The Division" and "World of Warcraft." Based on Nvidia's Pascal design, the P4 is more than three times as efficient at processing images than its predecessor and 40 times more efficient than Intel server chips, as stated in Nvidia's report.
