Yet, it's still my primary form of communication, especially when I'm trying to find answers to problems. In our highly digitized world, it's amazing we still use asynchronous communication so often. When you send a message, there's no way of knowing if the recipient is doing anything about it.

Hackers and other nefarious types tend to hide their forums and marketplaces in one of two ways. The first relies on the widely used Tor software to anonymize traffic as it passes around the Internet and prevent it being tracked. This is known as the "dark net." Another option is to use websites hosted on the open portion of the Web but not indexed by search engines. This is the "deep net," and can be equally hard to navigate. To monitor hacker activity in these places, Nunes and co developed a crawler to gather information from HTML pages hosted on the deep net and the dark net. Obviously, a key part of this work is to point the crawler at the best starting pages, a task that must be done by humans familiar with these pages.

China's search engine giant Baidu jumped onto the bandwagon of artificial intelligence as it showcased a number of achievements and industry solutions such as voice recognition, graphics recognition and consumer profiling at the Baidu World Conference in Beijing today. Baidu Chief Scientist Andrew Ng announced the opening up of two open platforms, Baidu's deep learning research tools platform and its artificial intelligence portal to support a wide range of industries to enhance efficiency. It is also offering the software up to the global community of AI researchers, an approach adopted by many tech firms to attract top talents as well as to allow the company to shape the development of the research field. Graphics processing unit developer Nvidia's co-founder and CEO Jen Hsun Huang also announced at the conference it is to partner with Baidu to build a comprehensive autonomous driving platform that allows Baidu to get a self-driving vehicle on the road.
