Natural Language Processing Key Terms, Explained

#artificialintelligence

At the intersection of computational linguistics and artificial intelligence is where we find natural language processing. Very broadly, natural language processing (NLP) is a discipline which is interested in how human languages, and, to some extent, the humans who speak them, interact with technology. NLP is an interdisciplinary topic which has historically been the equal domain of artificial intelligence researchers and linguistics alike; perhaps obviously, those approaching the discipline from the linguistics side must get up to speed on technology, while those entering the discipline from the technology realm need to learn the linguistic concepts. It is this second group that this post aims to serve at an introductory level, as we take a no-nonsense approach to defining some key NLP terminology. While you certainly won't be a linguistic expert after reading this, we hope that you are better able to understand some of the NLP-related discourse, and gain perspective as to how to proceed with learning more on the topics herein.

Following the recent election cycle, voter turnout issues are at the forefront of the American consciousness. Several chatbots have recently been developed to help citizens quickly and easily register to vote. The bots GoVoteBot, VotePlz, and HelloVote all let users complete their voter registration via SMS and Facebook Messenger.

Jessica is a business and finance writer, focusing on impact investing, social entrepreneurship and economic development. She previously reported for financial publications covering the global private equity, real estate and insurance markets. "Quality education will always require active engagement by human teacher," write researchers from the Stanford One Hundred Study on Artificial Intelligence. But artificial intelligence will inform the teaching processes of the future as pressure builds on educators to "contain costs while serving a larger number of students and moving students through school more quickly." This week, ImpactAlpha is extracting nuggets from Stanford's century-long effort to understand AI's long-term possibilities and dangers.

The Artistic Side of Artificial Intelligence

His art practice follows two main paths. On one hand, Tresset presents theatrical installations in which robotic agents are actors. He also crafts the computational systems driving the robots so that their behavior can be perceived as artistic, expressive and even obsessive. These systems are influenced by research into actual human behavior--more specifically, how humans make marks or draw, how humans depict other humans, how humans perceive artwork, and how humans relate to robots. Originally a painter, Tresset is part of a generation of artists coming out of Goldsmiths College's computing department.

Mnuchin: It may take a century for artificial intelligence to take U.S. jobs

#artificialintelligence

It may take a century for artificial technology to eliminate U.S. jobs, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Friday. Mnuchin appeared to use a very narrow definition of artificial intelligence, as many studies have shown technology has already taken millions of U.S. jobs. "Technology has helped productivity," he said. "As it relates to artificial intelligence taking over American jobs, I think we're so far away from that, it's not even on my radar screen." Asked by Axios's Mike Allen if it's seven more years, he replied, "I think it's 50 or 100 more years." A widely cited Ball State study found that trade was responsible for 13% of U.S. manufacturing job losses between 2000 and 2010.

Google's AI software is learning to make AI software

#artificialintelligence

Progress in artificial intelligence causes some people to worry that software will take jobs such as driving trucks away from humans. Now leading researchers are finding that they can make software that can learn to do one of the trickiest parts of their own jobs--the task of designing machine-learning software. In one experiment, researchers at the Google Brain artificial intelligence research group had software design a machine-learning system to take a test used to benchmark software that processes language. What it came up with surpassed previously published results from software designed by humans. In recent months several other groups have also reported progress on getting learning software to make learning software.

TensorFlow Machine Learning Cookbook

TensorFlow is an open source software library for Machine Intelligence. The independent recipes in this book will teach you how to use TensorFlow for complex data computations and will let you dig deeper and gain more insights into your data than ever before. This guide starts with the fundamentals of the TensorFlow library which includes variables, matrices, and various data sources. Moving ahead, you will get hands-on experience with Linear Regression techniques with TensorFlow. The next chapters cover important high-level concepts such as neural networks, CNN, RNN, and NLP.

Investment banks to choose artificial intelligence over humans

#artificialintelligence

Under constant pressure to slash costs and boost returns, investment banks are set to replace humans with artificial intelligence. Stamford, Connecticut-based research firm Greenwich Associates thinks investment banks will seek to deploy artificial intelligence across research, sales, trading, and compliance. Already used to detect fraud, deliver credit ratings and provide robotic financial advice in the retail sectors, artificial intelligence could be set to overhaul the way wholesale markets work. Richard Johnson, vice president of market structure and technology at Greenwich, said: "In today's environment of continued cost pressure and low margins in many businesses, investment banks are even more incentivized to reduce costs through automation." "AI and robotic process automation promise to provide just the solution they are looking for," he added in the March 7 statement.

Google now handles at least 2 trillion searches per year

#artificialintelligence

How many searches per year happen on Google? After nearly four years, the company has finally released an updated figure today of "trillions" per year. How many trillions, exactly, Google wouldn't say. Consider two trillion the starting point. Google did confirm to Search Engine Land that because it said it handles "trillions" of searches per year worldwide, the figure could be safely assumed to be two trillion or above.
