Intel's acquisition earlier this month of Nervana Systems is another example of how startups are preparing to disrupt the worlds largest industries using Artificial Intelligence. DCVC, a venture capital fund that invests in entrepreneurs applying cognitive computing, big data and IT infrastructure technologies to transform giant industries. The company wrote this overview on the services Nervana Systems is already deploying with the goal to disrupt the world's largest industries. How is AI changing the workforce?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is steadily growing more sophisticated, particularly in regards to advanced decision making capabilities, making it increasingly appealing to corporations. It's quite simple for AI to predict a temporary employee's success in completing a single task. When developing artificially intelligent software, companies have been tasked with giving the software a human touch that encourages people to welcome AI into their business and personal lives. Specialising in cloud business management, Tithof leads Unit4's business, being responsible for developing new business, strategic account selling and continuing the successful partnerships with Agilyx, Connexxion and S1 Consulting within the region.

There are three central challenges that have plagued past efforts to use artificial intelligence in medicine: the label problem, the deployment problem, and fear around regulation. With tools like Apple's ResearchKit and Google Fit, we can collect health data at scale; with deep learning, we can translate large volumes of raw data into insights that help both clinicians and patients take real actions. These annotations, called labels, are essential to make techniques like deep learning work. These two things enable outside-in approaches to healthcare: build up a user base outside the core of the healthcare system (e.g., outside the EMR), but take on risk for core problems within the healthcare system, such as re-hospitalizations.

Researchers at Uppsala University have used computer modeling to study how brain tumors arise. Instead of almost exclusively using different biological models, like cells, today large-scale statistical analyses are increasingly used to understand tumor diseases and find new therapies. In the study the researchers used aSICS to interpret data from brain tumors and they could identify a new mechanism behind mesenchymal glioblastoma, an extra aggressive brain tumor type. "According to the computer model, mesenchymal glioblastoma is partly caused by alterations in a gene called Annexin A2.

The online dating service on Tuesday announced a partnership with music streaming site Spotify that will enable a brand new feature for those looking for a romantic match. Taking Tinder's swiping feature a step further, the Anthem will refer users who share similar musical interests. Tinder would pull "liked" brands and musical artists from Facebook pages, akin to the site's "common" or "shared interests" recommendations. In addition, Tinder is launching Tinder Music, which gives users set music themes that help them create their favorite playlists.

Steve recognises the "disruptive and pervasive" impact AI is already having on business: "AI is enabling companies to achieve improved operational efficiency, develop new and improved products and services, and most significantly entirely new business models. Universities are particularly well suited for interdisciplinary approaches that include multiple technical disciplines as well as the liberal arts, humanities, arts, and social sciences. "Data sharing agreements with appropriate protections for sensitive confidential information enable university data science researchers to develop practical algorithms using real-world data. Municipal, state, and national governments are working to improve accessibility and the democratization of data.

Even though only 15% of the respondents think artificial intelligence is having a large impact on their business today. Forty-six percent believe AI will be critical to them within the next 40 months - that's a 207% predicted increase in business impact. Only 18% of digital leaders in our survey report bots are having a "large to very large" impact on their businesses today, but by year 2020, it jumps to 41%. Without the implementation of an OILS, your IT infrastructure will be too slow to operate today in an increasingly mobile world, and too slow to add the additional layers of AI, bot and predictive functionality for tomorrow.

We have long relied upon simple image manipulation like blurring and pixelation to obscure sensitive information on the internet, but that may not work for much longer. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and Cornell Tech have developed a machine learning system that can identify faces and text in images with alarming accuracy. The researchers trained a neural network with images of faces and text and found it could often correctly identify the images again after they had been obfuscated with three different techniques -- YouTube's proprietary blur tool, standard mosaic pixelation, and the P3 algorithm. For some data sets, the neural network was able to correctly identify the YouTube blurred image with 80 or 90% accuracy.

Evernote migrates data to Google Cloud Platform

#artificialintelligence

Notes platform Evernote has announced plans to migrate its complete data infrastructure from its own servers and networks onto Google's Cloud. With an existing relationship with Google, through a previous integration with Google Drive, Evernote has made swift progress on finalising the infrastructure plans. The data migration is expected to begin from next month, finishing towards the end of 2016. It is these machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities which Google plans to leverage in attracting large enterprises to its cloud, over rivals Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
