Exclusive: Metalenz Has Figured Out a Way to Make Face ID Invisible

WIRED

Metalenz's Polar ID face-scanning technology works even when the camera is hidden under the display. The notch has largely been replaced on today's smartphones by floating punch-hole cameras that take up less space and look a little more futuristic, though notches are still prevalent on some laptops, like Apple's MacBooks . On the iPhone, Apple calls its floating pill-shaped camera system the Dynamic Island, which debuted on the iPhone 14 . The iPhone still has the largest camera cutout today, due to its Face ID biometric authentication system. This island could get much smaller, however, thanks to new under-display camera technology announced at Display Week 2026 from Metalenz, a optics startup from Boston.

Aiper's EcoSurfer 2 is a skimmer on the slow side, but it makes up for speed shortcomings with outstanding longevity. Roving pool surface skimmers are a surprisingly consistent category in the aquatic robotics space, typically featuring solar-powered, fully autonomous operation that you can drop in the pool and forget about for weeks. With its EcoSurfer S2, Aiper refreshes its skimmer design, boosts battery life, and improves intelligence. And while most pool owners can probably get by without a surface skimmer, it's a strong candidate for purchase if the surface of your pool is prone to collecting a lot of floating debris.

What is the Ukrainian anti-drone system Sky Map being used in the Gulf?

Al Jazeera

How well do you know Iran? What is the Ukrainian anti-drone system Sky Map being used in the Gulf? Cheap, mass-produced one-way drones have played a major role in the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran since the first attacks on Tehran on February 28. As Iran uses these drones to target energy facilities, airbases and other strategic sites across the Gulf and Israel, the US and Israel use expensive interceptor missiles for defence. To counter the drone threat, Gulf states and their US partners have turned to Ukrainian-made anti-drone technology, battle-tested against Russian drone attacks.

Wired connectivity doesn't include Ethernet The ROG Zephyrus Duo successfully brings the dual-screen design of the Asus ZenBook Duo to a gaming laptop, though at a high price. Do you like having a screen on your laptop? The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo has two of them! While most games don't readily support display across multiple screens simultaneously, extra display space is always appreciated, especially if you often need to watch a guide or refer to external websites while playing ( players, I'm looking at you). Instead, it's a robust, attractive, and well-executed dual-screen laptop, though it does have a notable problem.

Letters from Our Readers

The New Yorker

Readers respond to Sarah Stillman's piece about the detention of migrant children, Patrick Radden Keefe's investigation into car-insurance fraud in New Orleans, and Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz's profile of Sam Altman. Sarah Stillman, in her excellent article on the U.S. government's detention of migrant children, does what many media outlets find impossible: she stays with an ongoing horror even as the news cycles that placed it front and center have passed ("No Mercy," April 20th). Stillman's piece also reminded me that the United States is the only U.N. member state that refuses to ratify the organization's Convention on the Rights of the Child, which enshrines children with certain rights--including to stay with their families whenever possible and to due process. America's refusal dates back to the nineteen-nineties; considering this, the current Administration's actions can be seen only as a shameful continuation of our country's failure to respect human rights, even on its own soil. Stillman's piece details widespread medical neglect at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, in Dilley, Texas, and points out that one source for its population's medical problems is the town's water.
