A low-tech solution from the past may be your best defense against AI deepfakes

Deepfakes and AI clones get more sophisticated and harder to detect. Advanced attacks involve long-term infiltration of a company's systems. Experts recommend low-tech security protocols that offer better defenses. In January 2024, an employee at professional services firm Arup joined a video call with someone they believed included the company's CFO.
Get a Tech Job, Babies!
Get a Tech Job, Babies! If your idea of a perfect board book for people under the age of three is Sandra Boynton's 1982 classic " Moo, Baa, La La La!," you might be surprised to discover what's passing for toddler literature these days. Forget the silly animal high jinks, the humble slapstick of peekaboo and patty-cake, and the earnest overviews of shapes, colors, and numbers; some of today's baby books have far loftier ambitions. A sampling of titles from the past decade: " Bath Time Physics," " General Relativity for Babies," " Baby Loves Aerospace Engineering! Open the sturdy turquoise cover of Ruth Spiro's " Baby Loves Coding!," illustrated by Irene Chan, and you might be lulled into thinking that this is, indeed, a book for very young children. It's small (about seven inches square), short (only ten spreads), made of chunky cardboard, and full of bright colors. It starts off promisingly, with a smiling toy train rolling toward a bobbleheaded, pink-cheeked baby. This pattern of steps is called an algorithm. The train follows an algorithm, too. A tiny computer tells the train what to do. A programmer writes an algorithm in a language the computer can understand. The language is called code. The computer reads the code and follows the steps in the algorithm. Lately, these tech-oriented books for infants and toddlers seem to be everywhere. The twenty-six books in Spiro's "Baby Loves Science" series are rivalled by Chris Ferrie's extensive "Baby University" collection, with such winning titles as " Electromagnetism for Babies," " Quantum Computing for Babies " (co-authored by William Hurley), and " Robotics for Babies " (co-authored by Sarah Kaiser). And let's not forget the "Big Science for Tiny Tots" series, from MIT Kids Press, featuring " High Chair Chemistry " and " Playtime Engineering ." In a manic burst of science geekery, there are even special holiday versions of Spiro's "Baby Loves Science" books, though you might have trouble getting past the word-salad titles: " Baby Loves Angular Momentum on Hanukkah!
I hate this, but buying a GPU now might actually make sense
A GPU vendor warns price hikes are coming later this year, and I can't help wondering if that means now is the right time to pull the trigger. Well okay, now might only be the second-best time to buy a GPU--the best time was probably just before AI-crazed companies started hoovering up all the memory and storage. But unless you can go back in time, right now might be the best time for anyone considering a graphics card purchase to pull the trigger. I say that because on this week's episode of The Full Nerd I heard the hosts discussing a recent Tom's Hardware story about a GPU vendor warning that card prices are going to rise significantly in the back half of this year. The vendor, PC Partner, also predicts that "entry-level" cards will be the hardest to get.

The Patrick Clancy Conspiracy Theories Are Rooted in the Harsh Realities of Motherhood
Lindsay Clancy's defense argues she killed her three kids because of postpartum psychosis. But armchair detectives, including many fed-up mothers, are laying blame with her ex-husband. For many watching Lindsay Clancy's murder trial, the primary takeaway has been how the deaths of her three small children--Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callen, eight months--were tragically preventable . Lawyers for the Massachusetts nurse are arguing that she's not criminally responsible for strangling her children, because she suffered from severe postpartum psychosis, a rare mental health condition that causes new mothers to experience delusions and intrusive thoughts. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington has put Lindsay's health care providers on the stand, in an attempt to demonstrate how his client repeatedly sought help for her terrifying thoughts, only for her to be minimized, dismissed, and overmedicated at every turn.
Russia says ready for 'new ideas' on Ukraine war that match Putin's goals
Is the war entering a new phase? Russia says ready for'new ideas' on Ukraine war that match Putin's goals Moscow is ready to listen to new ideas for ending the war in Ukraine, provided they align with President Vladimir Putin's position, a senior Russian diplomat has said. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview published by News.ru on Friday that Russia is open to proposals that are in line with "realities on the ground". Moscow previously welcomed the United States' demonstrating "an understanding of Russia's position", but Washington has been distracted from mediation efforts amid its war on Iran . "The Russian Federation is ready to listen to any reasonable proposals and ideas that are in line with the goals set by the Russian president and meet the'realities on the ground'," Ryabkov said.
