Bit-Serial Neural Networks

Neural Information Processing Systems

This arises from representation which gives rise to gentle degradation as faults appear. These functions are attractive to implementation in VLSI and WSI. For example, the natural be useful in silicon wafers with imperfect yield, where thefault - tolerance could is approximately proportional to the non-functioning siliconnetwork degradation area. To cast neural networks in engineering language, a neuron is a state machine that is either "on" or "off', which in general assumes intermediate states as it switches The synapses weighting the signals from asmoothly between these extrema.

Temporal Patterns of Activity in Neural Networks

Neural Information Processing Systems

Paolo Gaudiano Dept. of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, University of Colorado, Boulder CO 80309, USA January 5, 1988 Abstract Patterns of activity over real neural structures are known to exhibit timedependent behavior. It would seem that the brain may be capable of utilizing temporal behavior of activity in neural networks as a way of performing functions which cannot otherwise be easily implemented. These might include the origination of sequential behavior and the recognition of time-dependent stimuli. A model is presented here which uses neuronal populations with recurrent feedback connections inan attempt to observe and describe the resulting time-dependent behavior. Shortcomings and problems inherent to this model are discussed. Current models by other researchers are reviewed and their similarities and differences discussed. METHODS / PRELIMINARY RESULTS In previous papers,[2,3] computer models were presented that simulate a net consisting oftwo spatially organized populations of realistic neurons.

Microelectronic Implementations of Connectionist Neural Networks

Neural Information Processing Systems

Three chip designs are described: a hybrid digital/analog programmable connection matrix, an analog connection matrix with adjustable connection strengths, and a digital pipelined best-match chip. The common feature of the designs is the distribution of arithmetic processing power amongst the data storage to minimize data movement.

Correlational Strength and Computational Algebra of Synaptic Connections Between Neurons

Neural Information Processing Systems

Correlational Strength and Computational Algebra of Synaptic Connections Between Neurons Eberhard E. Fetz Department of Physiology & Biophysics, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195 ABSTRACT Intracellular recordings in spinal cord motoneurons and cerebral cortex neurons have provided new evidence on the correlational strength of monosynaptic connections, and the relation between the shapes of postsynaptic potentials and the associated increased firing probability. In these cells, excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) produce crosscorrelogram peakswhich resemble in large part the derivative of the EPSP. Additional synaptic noise broadens the peak, but the peak area -- i.e., the number of above-chance firings triggered per EPSP -- remains proportional to the EPSP amplitude. The consequences of these data for information processing by polysynaptic connections is discussed. The effects of sequential polysynaptic links can be calculated by convolving the effects of the underlying monosynaptic connections.

Distributed Neural Information Processing in the Vestibulo-Ocular System

Neural Information Processing Systems

In this model, head motion is sensed topographically by hair cells in the semicircular canals. Hair cell signals are then processed by multiple synapses in the primary afferent neurons which exhibit a continuum of varying dynamics. The model is an application of the concept of "multilayered" neural networks to the description of findings in the bullfrog vestibular nerve, and allows us to formulate mathematically the behavior of an assembly of neurons whose physiological characteristics vary according to their anatomical properties. INTRODUCTION Traditionally the physiological properties of individual vestibular afferent neurons have been modeled as a linear time-invariant system based on Steinhausents description of cupular motion.

A Method for Evaluating Candidate Expert System Applications

AI Magazine

We built on previous work to develop an evaluation method that can be used to select expert system applications which are most likely to be successfully implemented. Both essential and desirable features of an expert system application are discussed. Essential features are used to ensure that the application does not require technology beyond the state of the art. Advice on helpful directions for evaluating candidate expert system applications is also given.

A Novel Approach to Expert Systems for Design of Large Structures

AI Magazine

A novel approach is presented for the development of expert systems for structural design problems. This approach differs from the conventional expert systems in two fundamental respects. As an example of this approach, a prototype coupled expert system, the bridge truss expert (BTExpert), is presented for optimum design of bridge trusses subjected to moving loads. BTExpert was developed by interfacing an interactive optimization program developed in Fortran 77 to an expert system shell developed in Pascal.

Foundations and Grand Challenges of Artificial Intelligence: AAAI Presidential Address

AI Magazine

AAAI is a society devoted to supporting the progress in science, technology and applications of AI. I thought I would use this occasion to share with you some of my thoughts on the recent advances in AI, the insights and theoretical foundations that have emerged out of the past thirty years of stable, sustained, systematic explorations in our field, and the grand challenges motivating the research in our field.

Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence

AI Magazine

The Fourth Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence workshop was held 19-21 August 1988. The workshop featured significant developments in application of theories of representation and reasoning under uncertainty. A recurring idea at the workshop was the need to examine uncertainty calculi in the context of choosing representation, inference, and control methodologies. The effectiveness of these choices in AI systems tends to be best considered in terms of specific problem areas. These areas include automated planning, temporal reasoning, computer vision, medical diagnosis, fault detection, text analysis, distributed systems, and behavior of nonlinear systems. Influence diagrams are emerging as a unifying representation, enabling tool development. Interest and results in uncertainty in AI are growing beyond the capacity of a workshop format.
