Can a simple photo of your face reveal how ill you are?

BBC News

Can a simple photo of your face reveal how ill you are? An AI tool may be able to help doctors judge how ill a patient is using a single photograph of their face, say US researchers. Trained on millions of healthy faces, and 35,000 photos of cancer patients, the tool can make estimates on survival by looking closely at features near the eyes, the scientists say. While it's a long way from being suitable for use in hospitals, the researchers say their goal is to help doctors recommend the right treatments for their patients. The preliminary findings are published in the Lancet Digital Health, external journal.

Job vacancies fall as small firms cut back on recruitment

BBC News

Job vacancies in the UK have seen their largest fall since the start of the year as smaller businesses cut back on recruitment, official figures indicate. Vacancies fell by 21,000 in the three months to September to 691,000, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which said small firms were citing labour costs as a key factor in scaling back hiring. Energy costs have risen since the Iran war began, and companies have also said that increases in National Insurance and the minimum wage have made it more expensive to employ staff. The ONS figures also showed the unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in the three months to August, down from the previous figure of 4.9%. Job vacancies fell to their lowest level in more than five years, the figures indicated, with the largest decrease in construction jobs.

Hollywood AI-listers: is the technology ready to rival flesh-and-blood film stars?

Director Coerte Voorhees knows exactly what he is doing - this is an AI-created version of the late actor, approved by his family but bringing with it a heap of controversy about whether such technology could make flesh-and-blood thespians redundant. Not just yet, judging by the extended glimpse of the film released earlier this year: it looks like a thirtysomething Kilmer, if a robot version had been sent back to the 1920s American wilderness by Skynet and, as well as being strangely rigid, had forgotten to download his voice, let alone his signature air of spacey shrewdness. Kilmer's estate signed off on it, citing his enthusiasm for new technology that expands storytelling, but surely he would have been dismayed by this freaky doppelganger. Many reacted with revulsion to last year's unveiling of AI "starlet" Tilly Norwood .

How is the US economy really doing under President Trump?

BBC News

How is the US economy really doing under President Trump? President Donald Trump has been boasting about the performance of the US economy ahead of the midterm congressional elections, claiming he has boosted incomes, reduced inflation and created jobs. Trump has repeatedly said: We have the hottest country anywhere in the world. While the overall US economy is faring better than many expected after Trump launched his sweeping Liberation Day tariffs in 2025, there's evidence those import taxes and the impact of the US-Israel war with Iran have pushed up inflation, with the harmful effects felt by most American households. The US economy is also being helped by an AI investment boom, and could falter if that spending were to dry up. So how does all this feel for the average American?

Don't be fooled. The AI that was supposed to save us time is doing just the opposite Gaby Hinsliff

Since the adoption of ChatGPT, governments around the world are seeing surges in complaints and requests. Since the adoption of ChatGPT, governments around the world are seeing surges in complaints and requests. The government says it can transform the state with AI, but it is no match for the resulting stream of machine-generated slop. Even after a guilty cull, my inbox is sitting at well over 7,000, but lately I've started subscribing to the Quentin Crisp theory of housework: why bother, when after four years or so you stop noticing the accumulating dust? Empty inboxes just fill up again anyway.

We asked teens what schools should teach them about work. This is what they said

BBC News

We asked teens what schools should teach them about work. More than four in 10 UK teenagers want more work experience opportunities at school, with a similar proportion calling for more guidance on how to apply for jobs, a survey for the BBC suggests. The online survey, by Survation,, external asked 2,000 young people aged 13 to 18 about the world of work and the help they need to secure employment once they leave full-time education. Some called for more support with their communications skills and raised concerns about stress management and personal finances. Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said it was the government's mission to ensure teenagers leave school confident about their next step and equipped with the skills and experience they need to succeed.
