Crime Prediction Based On Crime Types And Using Spatial And Temporal Criminal Hotspots

This paper focuses on finding spatial and temporal criminal hotspots. It analyses two different real-world crimes datasets for Denver, CO and Los Angeles, CA and provides a comparison between the two datasets through a statistical analysis supported by several graphs. Then, it clarifies how we conducted Apriori algorithm to produce interesting frequent patterns for criminal hotspots. In addition, the paper shows how we used Decision Tree classifier and Naive Bayesian classifier in order to predict potential crime types. To further analyse crimes datasets, the paper introduces an analysis study by combining our findings of Denver crimes dataset with its demographics information in order to capture the factors that might affect the safety of neighborhoods. The results of this solution could be used to raise awareness regarding the dangerous locations and to help agencies to predict future crimes in a specific location within a particular time.
Extensions of stability selection using subsamples of observations and covariates

Variable selection techniques aim at identifying such relevant covariates (for a review see Guyon, 2006). Usually, variable selection aims at one of two goals: to identify informative covariates in order to get scientific insight into the data and the process that generated the outcome; or to use the covariates identified as relevant in order to predict the outcome. In this work we primarily focus on the identification of informative covariates but also consider prediction results using real data. We consider variable selection (also called feature selection in computer science-related communities) as a part of the broader field of dimensionality reduction. Many variable selection methods share the common drawback of being unstable with respect to small changes of the data: if one estimates the set of relevant covariates on different sets of observations coming from the same source, the result can vary significantly.
A Knowledge Gradient Policy for Sequencing Experiments to Identify the Structure of RNA Molecules Using a Sparse Additive Belief Model

We present a sparse knowledge gradient (SpKG) algorithm for adaptively selecting the targeted regions within a large RNA molecule to identify which regions are most amenable to interactions with other molecules. Experimentally, such regions can be inferred from fluorescence measurements obtained by binding a complementary probe with fluorescence markers to the targeted regions. We use a biophysical model which shows that the fluorescence ratio under the log scale has a sparse linear relationship with the coefficients describing the accessibility of each nucleotide, since not all sites are accessible (due to the folding of the molecule). The SpKG algorithm uniquely combines the Bayesian ranking and selection problem with the frequentist $\ell_1$ regularized regression approach Lasso. We use this algorithm to identify the sparsity pattern of the linear model as well as sequentially decide the best regions to test before experimental budget is exhausted. Besides, we also develop two other new algorithms: batch SpKG algorithm, which generates more suggestions sequentially to run parallel experiments; and batch SpKG with a procedure which we call length mutagenesis. It dynamically adds in new alternatives, in the form of types of probes, are created by inserting, deleting or mutating nucleotides within existing probes. In simulation, we demonstrate these algorithms on the Group I intron (a mid-size RNA molecule), showing that they efficiently learn the correct sparsity pattern, identify the most accessible region, and outperform several other policies.
Universal Approximation of Edge Density in Large Graphs
With the recent availability of much network data, such as world wide web, social networks, phone call networks, science collaboration graphs [1], [2], there is a renewed interest for the graph partitioning problem, especially for the automatic discovery of community structures in large networks [3], [4], [5]. Beyond clustering approaches, coclustering approaches aim at summarizing the relation between two entities in a many-to-many relationship. Such a relation can be represented as a graph, where the source and target vertices represent entities and the edges stand for relations between entities. A coclustering model provides a summary of a graph by grouping source vertices and target vertices. For example, in market analysis, the source vertices of the graph represent customers, the target vertices represent products and there is one edge each time a customer has purchased a product. A coclustering model summarizes the dataset by grouping customers that have purchased approximately the same products and grouping products that have been purchased by approximately the same customers. Coclustering models have been applied to many other domains, such as information retrieval (the entities are documents and their words in a text corpus), web log analysis (cookies and their visited web pages), web structure analysis (web pages with hyperlinks between them) or telecommunication network (the call detail records stand for the edges in a call graph between a caller and a called party). All these real-world graphs are directed multigraphs, meaning that two entities may be linked by multi-edges. We aim to summarize and discover insightful patterns in such graphs, using a method with the desired following properties: 1) Robustness, to avoid detecting spurious patterns in case of noisy data.
A Gauss-Newton Method for Markov Decision Processes
Approximate Newton methods are a standard optimization tool which aim to maintain the benefits of Newton's method, such as a fast rate of convergence, whilst alleviating its drawbacks, such as computationally expensive calculation or estimation of the inverse Hessian. In this work we investigate approximate Newton methods for policy optimization in Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). We first analyse the structure of the Hessian of the objective function for MDPs. We show that, like the gradient, the Hessian exhibits useful structure in the context of MDPs and we use this analysis to motivate two Gauss-Newton Methods for MDPs. Like the Gauss-Newton method for non-linear least squares, these methods involve approximating the Hessian by ignoring certain terms in the Hessian which are difficult to estimate. The approximate Hessians possess desirable properties, such as negative definiteness, and we demonstrate several important performance guarantees including guaranteed ascent directions, invariance to affine transformation of the parameter space, and convergence guarantees. We finally provide a unifying perspective of key policy search algorithms, demonstrating that our second Gauss-Newton algorithm is closely related to both the EM-algorithm and natural gradient ascent applied to MDPs, but performs significantly better in practice on a range of challenging domains.
Predicting Occupancy Trends in Barcelona's Bicycle Service Stations Using Open Data

In 2008, the CEO of the company that manages and maintains the public bicycle service in Barcelona recognized that one may not expect to always find a place to leave the rented bike nearby their destination, similarly to the case when, driving a car, people may not find a parking lot. In this work, we make predictions about the statuses of the stations of the public bicycle service in Barcelona. We show that it is feasible to correctly predict nearly half of the times when the stations are either completely full of bikes or completely empty, up to 2 days before they actually happen. That is, users might avoid stations at times when they could not return a bicycle that they have rented before, or when they would not find a bike to rent. To achieve that, we apply the Random Forest algorithm to classify the status of the stations and improve the lifetime of the models using publicly available data, such as information about the weather forecast. Finally, we expect that the results of the predictions can be used to improve the quality of the service and make it more reliable for the users.
Ontology Bulding vs Data Harvesting and Cleaning for Smart-city Services

Presently, a very large number of public and private data sets are available around the local governments. In most cases, they are not semantically interoperable and a huge human effort is needed to create integrated ontologies and knowledge base for smart city. Smart City ontology is not yet standardized, and a lot of research work is needed to identify models that can easily support the data reconciliation, the management of the complexity and reasoning. In this paper, a system for data ingestion and reconciliation smart cities related aspects as road graph, services available on the roads, traffic sensors etc., is proposed. The system allows managing a big volume of data coming from a variety of sources considering both static and dynamic data. These data are mapped to smart-city ontology and stored into an RDF-Store where they are available for applications via SPARQL queries to provide new services to the users. The paper presents the process adopted to produce the ontology and the knowledge base and the mechanisms adopted for the verification, reconciliation and validation. Some examples about the possible usage of the coherent knowledge base produced are also offered and are accessible from the RDF-Store.
Appropriate Causal Models and the Stability of Causation
Causal models defined in terms of structural equations have proved to be quite a powerful way of representing knowledge regarding causality. However, a number of authors have given examples that seem to show that the Halpern-Pearl (HP) definition of causality gives intuitively unreasonable answers. Here it is shown that, for each of these examples, we can give two stories consistent with the description in the example, such that intuitions regarding causality are quite different for each story. By adding additional variables, we can disambiguate the stories. Moreover, in the resulting causal models, the HP definition of causality gives the intuitively correct answer. It is also shown that, by adding extra variables, a modification to the original HP definition made to deal with an example of Hopkins and Pearl may not be necessary. Given how much can be done by adding extra variables, there might be a concern that the notion of causality is somewhat unstable. Can adding extra variables in a "conservative" way (i.e., maintaining all the relations between the variables in the original model) cause the answer to the question "Is X=x a cause of Y=y" to alternate between "yes" and "no"? It is shown that we can have such alternation infinitely often, but if we take normality into consideration, we cannot. Indeed, under appropriate normality assumptions. adding an extra variable can change the answer from "yes" to "no", but after that, it cannot cannot change back to "yes".
Unsupervised Learning in Genome Informatics

With different genomes available, unsupervised learning algorithms are essential in learning genome-wide biological insights. Especially, the functional characterization of different genomes is essential for us to understand lives. In this book chapter, we review the state-of-the-art unsupervised learning algorithms for genome informatics from DNA to MicroRNA. DNA (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid) is the basic component of genomes. A significant fraction of DNA regions (transcription factor binding sites) are bound by proteins (transcription factors) to regulate gene expression at different development stages in different tissues. To fully understand genetics, it is necessary of us to apply unsupervised learning algorithms to learn and infer those DNA regions. Here we review several unsupervised learning methods for deciphering the genome-wide patterns of those DNA regions. MicroRNA (miRNA), a class of small endogenous non-coding RNA (RiboNucleic acid) species, regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by forming imperfect base-pair with the target sites primarily at the 3$'$ untranslated regions of the messenger RNAs. Since the 1993 discovery of the first miRNA \emph{let-7} in worms, a vast amount of studies have been dedicated to functionally characterizing the functional impacts of miRNA in a network context to understand complex diseases such as cancer. Here we review several representative unsupervised learning frameworks on inferring miRNA regulatory network by exploiting the static sequence-based information pertinent to the prior knowledge of miRNA targeting and the dynamic information of miRNA activities implicated by the recently available large data compendia, which interrogate genome-wide expression profiles of miRNAs and/or mRNAs across various cell conditions.
Time-series modeling with undecimated fully convolutional neural networks
We present a new convolutional neural network-based time-series model. Typical convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures rely on the use of max-pooling operators in between layers, which leads to reduced resolution at the top layers. Instead, in this work we consider a fully convolutional network (FCN) architecture that uses causal filtering operations, and allows for the rate of the output signal to be the same as that of the input signal. We furthermore propose an undecimated version of the FCN, which we refer to as the undecimated fully convolutional neural network (UFCNN), and is motivated by the undecimated wavelet transform. Our experimental results verify that using the undecimated version of the FCN is necessary in order to allow for effective time-series modeling. The UFCNN has several advantages compared to other time-series models such as the recurrent neural network (RNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), since it does not suffer from either the vanishing or exploding gradients problems, and is therefore easier to train. Convolution operations can also be implemented more efficiently compared to the recursion that is involved in RNN-based models. We evaluate the performance of our model in a synthetic target tracking task using bearing only measurements generated from a state-space model, a probabilistic modeling of polyphonic music sequences problem, and a high frequency trading task using a time-series of ask/bid quotes and their corresponding volumes. Our experimental results using synthetic and real datasets verify the significant advantages of the UFCNN compared to the RNN and LSTM baselines.
