Amazon organized a secret robot, AI and space conference
The conference's details remain a secret -- Amazon hasn't even confirmed it yet. But Bloomberg says the guests attended seminars, including one that talked about giving robots human values. Amazon focused on these particular fields, most likely because they're all relevant to its interests. It has robots working in its warehouses, and it even held a robotics challenge last year to develop machines that can find items and fulfill orders. Its Amazon Echo speakers come with Alexa, its voice assistant that can read ebooks aloud, control the lights and give you election updates.
'Fearless' twins reveal how our bodies affect our emotions
Is fear all in the mind? Experiments on twins who can't feel fear are suggesting that some emotions are experienced only after we become aware of changes to our body. Many studies have shown that the amygdalae – two almond-shaped regions near the centre of the brain – are crucial for feeling fear. People who have lost their amygdalae through brain injury or disease also lose the ability to feel fear. In 2013, Justin Feinstein at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and his colleagues managed to scare three "fearless" people – two female identical twins and a woman known as S.M., none of whom have amygdalae – by getting them to inhale carbon dioxide, making them choke.
Google Working On Gesture-Based Keyboard For iPhone With GIF, Image And Search Functions: Report
Google may be looking to ensure its control of the world's search market by building a gesture-based smartphone and tablet keyboard designed to work with Apple's iPhone and iPad, which has integrated search functionality, according to sources speaking to the Verge. According to the report, Google employees have been testing the new keyboard for several months already though the search giant has yet to decide when or if it will release the keyboard to Apple's App Store. With the introduction of iOS 8 in 2014, Apple finally opened up its software to allow users install third-party keyboards to replace the stock iOS version. Google's keyboard, like the stock Android keyboard, allows for gesture typing, a feature that allows users to swipe their finger from one letter to the next allowing Google to then guess what word you want based on the shape of the gesture you have made. As well as this gesture feature, Google is said to be integrating GIFs and images directly into the keyboard which would be powered by Google's own image search.
Has the evolution of the phone come to an end? Experts fear innovation is being held back due to limits about size and battery life
Nearly a decade after the iPhone broke the mould, is the evolution of the smartphone finally come to an end? Industry experts believe innovation is giving way to phone functions popping up as software or services in devices from cars to fridges and to watches and jewellery. Even Apple now treats older, smaller 4-inch screens as something new. And analysts and product designers said fresh breakthroughs are running up against the practical limits of what's possible in current hardware in terms of screen size and battery life. Industry experts believe innovation is giving way to phone functions popping up as software or services in devices from cars to fridges and to watches and jewellery.

What Alpha Go means for the rest of us?
AlphaGo, from Google's DeepMind, made history today with its historic 4–1 defeat of Go world champion, Lee Sedol. Prior to the five-game match, many Go experts, including Mr. Lee himself predicted that the machine would be defeated 5–0 or, if it did well, 4–1. The result was quite the opposite with Mr. Lee managing just one win. This is both a shock for Go players, and represents an achievement in AI that many had not expected for at least another decade. Games, and in particular abstract strategy games like Go, chess and draughts have been a staple of AI research since its inception.
Cherubic Ventures announces 120M early-stage fund for U.S., China and rest of Asia - Artificial Intelligence Online
Cherubic Ventures, an early-stage VC firm with a focus on the U.S. and Asia, has announced a new fund targeted at 120 million. Fundraising is still ongoing, and founder-managing partner Matt Cheng told TechCrunch that the firm currently has 80 million in confirmed commitments from LPs. Cheng started Cherubic back in 2010 after spending time with Chinese social portal Tian Ge Interactive and C Squared Venture Capital. Today, its portfolio includes close to 90 companies worldwide, such as Hyperloop, Luxe and Wish in the U.S., Cloud Union and Liulishuo in China, and Pinkoi and Chadal in the wider Asian continent. The firm has offices in Beijing, Taipei and San Francisco but, alongside the announcement of the fund, Cheng said it had opened a new headquarters in Shanghai. That will house around half of the firm's team, which Cheng expects will increase to 12 this year.
Understanding the Promise and Pitfalls of Machine Learning
Machine learning is generating a tremendous amount of attention these days from the press as well as the practitioners. And rightly so – machine learning is a transformative technology. But despite the references to the topic, the money raised from venture capitalists, and the spotlight that Google is bringing to the subject, machine learning is still poorly understood outside of a core group of highly technical leaders. This has the effect of underestimating how transformative machine learning is going to be. It also has the effect of shielding business leaders from what they need to do to prepare for the era of machine learning.

Diagnosing Heart Diseases with Deep Neural Networks - Ira Korshunova
The Second National Data Science Bowl, a data science competition where the goal was to automatically determine cardiac volumes from MRI scans, has just ended. We participated with a team of 4 members from the Data Science lab at Ghent University in Belgium and finished 2nd! The team kunsthart (artificial heart in English) consisted of Ira Korshunova, Jeroen Burms, Jonas Degrave (@317070), 3 PhD students, and professor Joni Dambre. It's also a follow-up of last year's team Deep Sea, which finished in first place for the First National Data Science Bowl. This blog post is going to be long, here is a clickable overview of different sections. The goal of this year's Data Science Bowl was to estimate minimum (end-systolic) and maximum (end-diastolic) volumes of the left ventricle from a set of MRI-images taken over one heartbeat. These volumes are used by practitioners to compute an ejection fraction: fraction of outbound blood pumped from the heart with each heartbeat.
