US bans use of China's DeepSeek AI tools by government agencies
Use of tools'may result in the transfer of sensitive data' to China, defense department says The US government on Monday ordered its agencies to stop using artificial intelligence (AI) tools from the Chinese startup DeepSeek, as the countries race for dominance in the fast-moving sector. A notice from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the ban on products developed by DeepSeek - and tools created using DeepSeek by third parties - saying they must be removed from IT devices. The DHS can issue direction to civilian agencies but not the military or intelligence services. The US defense department did not respond to an AFP request for comment. "DeepSeek's models present multiple threat vectors," said a document attached to Monday's notice.

AI is increasingly getting good at doing some tasks, but it can never replace human workers' judgment A utonomous cars, which may be the safest we have built, keep getting easily avoidable parking tickets. That is the state of AI today: impressively capable at something complex, yet embarrassingly clumsy at something easy.
Paddy Power cuts 1,400 jobs and blames betting tax rises
Paddy Power-owner Flutter has announced plans to cut up to 1,400 jobs as its boss claimed the company cannot fully absorb tax rises imposed on the gambling industry. Staff based in the UK and Ireland, as well as British and Irish workers at Flutter's sites in Portugal and Romania will be affected, but what roles are at risk has not been disclosed. The government announced increased taxes on online casino and sports betting, with an exemption for horse racing, in the Budget last November. Flutter boss Kevin Harrington said the tax hikes had fundamentally changed the economic model of the UK betting and gaming industry, arguing it had helped fuel the unlicensed, unregulated market. We continue to expect these tax increases to have a very significant impact on the overall market, Flutter said on Tuesday.
The Download: the claim shaking up AI and the internet's agent problem
Plus: The US Army is trying to get AI agents to hack its enemies. "We were looking at it wrong": The explosive claim that's upended the AI world "I think I have good news about the nature of neural networks." With those simple words of optimism, Nick Cammarata, a researcher at AI startup Goodfire, kicked off a 26,000-word blog post that has knocked the AI world on its head, sparking wild speculation as well as cautious (and not-so-cautious) celebration. Cammarata claims that LLMs might be far easier to understand, and thus to monitor and control, than people previously thought. But not everyone is convinced. I talked to Cammarata the day after his post blew up.
Star Wars Galactic Racer misses the glory days of podracing as much as we do

I took more from the arcade racing game's single-player story mode than I was expecting... and maybe more than the developers intended. But it is a game podracing and a lot more. Perhaps more than the developers actually intended.
