ChatGPT now lets you lock sensitive chats behind a PIN

Engadget

OpenAI is making it easier to protect your ChatGPT conversations from prying eyes with the introduction of a feature called locked chats. With it enabled, you can decide whether a past exchange appears in your regular chat history, pinned chats and conversation search. To access your locked chats, you'll need to input a 4-digit PIN. On an iPhone or Android phone, you can also use authentication systems like Face ID to access those conversations. Either way, you'll find your private conversations grouped under a new project titled "Locked chats."

It's a bird, it's a plane … it's a robo-puffin?

MIT Technology Review

MIT engineers' design for a robot that both swims and flies could lead to a new class of vehicles for ocean exploration. Given that water is 1,000 times denser than air, moving through those two mediums requires very different mechanics--or so one might assume. Yet birds like gulls and puffins can plunge into the sea, swim underwater, and leap back into the air to fly away. And now engineers at MIT and EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, have designed a robot that can do likewise. The "flapping-wing aerial-aquatic vehicle," or FAAV, weighs less than 300 grams (about half a pound) and is equipped with a central fuselage, two flexible wings, and a steerable tail. The body contains a battery and a waterproof electric motor that drives a crankshaft, which pumps the wings up and down at preset frequencies.

Here's the tea

MIT Technology Review

An MIT historian uncovers the true origins of an artifact once thought to be a relic of the Boston Tea Party. When Tristan Brown, an associate professor of history at MIT, first examined a Chinese tea chest label displayed at Old South Meeting House, he had no reason to doubt its story. Descendants of the Boston blacksmith Thomas Wells had donated the label in 1987, saying it had been recovered after colonial protesters threw tea into Boston Harbor in 1773. But after a year of research, Brown reached a different conclusion: The label was made nearly a century later. The decisive clue came when he read the Chinese text in Cantonese rather than Mandarin, as previous scholars had done. He found that the characters had been used phonetically, in slightly variant forms across contemporary sources, to represent the name of Smith, Archer & Co., a US firm that acquired Asian tea for shipment to American markets during the 1860s and 1870s.

Audit regulator looking into Manchester City accounting

BBC News

The UK audit regulator has confirmed it is leading inquiries into accounting irregularities at Manchester City. The Financial Reporting Council confirmed in a letter to the House of Commons business select committee it had taken over regulatory consideration of the case from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales on 30 September. No formal investigation has started, but the FRC is making inquiries into the case. It comes after Manchester City were found guilty by an independent commission of all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, including by artificially inflating the club's financial position by more than £900m. City are appealing the verdict.

Judge tosses sexual abuse lawsuit from Sam Altman's sister

Engadget

A federal judge dismissed Ann Altman's lawsuit against her brother, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, on Tuesday. Instead, he wrote that Ann refused to appear for an independent medical examination, despite being warned that skipping it would lead to the case's dismissal. Ann Altman filed the lawsuit in January 2025, accusing Sam of sexually abusing her when she was a child. She alleged that the abuse took place at the family's Missouri home between 1997 and 2006, beginning when she was three and he was 12. She said the last instance of alleged abuse took place when her brother was an adult.
