Google's newest Pixel Watch feature can monitor your blood pressure and insulin resistance

Engadget

At the launch of the Pixel Watch 5, Google announced Health Guardian, a new suite of tools to keep an eye on your health. Google says its new platform will be able to see trends on your blood pressure, breathing and, most interestingly of all, insulin resistance. If it has been able to achieve the latter, then the consequences could be staggering. Cuffless blood pressure monitoring is increasingly common in high-end wearables, but with a lot of caveats around accuracy. Samsung's Galaxy Watch feature, for instance, asks that users regularly calibrate their watch against a traditional blood pressure cuff.

Pixel 11 Pro models have a pulsing light indicator on the camera bump. HiLight pulses in response to incoming calls and Gemini interactions. Expanded functionality may be coming, but don't expect it at launch. I remember when life was much simpler, when I could just plop my phone down and know exactly when and how to respond to it depending on the color of its teensy-weensy LED indicator.

DeepMind's newest model allows Pixel 11 devices to transcribe sign language into text

Engadget

Smartphones have long offered voice-to-text transcription, but the same can't be said for sign-language-to-text. That's changing today with the launch of the Pixel 11 family, which marks the debut of DeepMind's new sign-language-to-text (SL2T) model. Google has embedded the model inside of Gboard and Live Transcribe, where it will allow deaf and hard of hearing users to sign to their phone anywhere where they would have normally typed in the past. In practice, that will give those users a faster, more natural way to search the web, write messages and converse with Google's Gemini chatbot. "There is great diversity among deaf people in terms of their level of proficiency in signing, speaking, reading, and writing, so it is important to support access in all modalities," says DeepMind.

4 New Camera Tricks on Google's Latest Pixel 11 Smartphones

WIRED

Google's Pixel Camera chief, Isaac Reynolds, thinks year-to-year upgrades to smartphone cameras are still critical, even though some detractors think they're passé. "A person who is a casual photographer and desperately wants to be a hobbyist--they're never going to break that ceiling unless you give them the tools, he says. The features that others call'meh'--for some people, those features are life-changing. Take the 30X Super Res Zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro from 2022, which uses machine learning to stitch together multiple frames in a digitally zoomed photo to give you a result that's much sharper than you're used to. Reynolds says that because of this feature, Google now sees people using 30X zoom dramatically more than before. The new Pixel 11 Pro, announced today, can zoom up to 120X, though in addition to the digital stitching, it relies on AI-generated pixels to fill in some details. Reynolds says maybe having that capability is enough to get someone interested in, say, wildlife photography. After experimenting on their phone, they'd be ready to invest in a professional camera and a big zoom lens. "There's a reason I work on low light and zoom every single year, he says.
