Trump asks Supreme Court to allow ballroom work to continue
Image caption, The US president argues that a ballroom is necessary for large events and enhanced security at the White House. US President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to allow him to continue building a $400m (ยฃ295m) ballroom at the White House without congressional permission. The emergency application comes one week after an appeals court ordered construction to stop until Congress approves, upholding a ruling won by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which sued the administration last year. In the latest filing, US Solicitor General D John Sauer asked that work be allowed to continue while the administration appeals the stop-work order, which he called dangerous. Trump has long argued the White House lacks a large event space and that building one is vital for national security.

Tech Visionary Says the Big AI Labs Don't Get What People Want Tim O'Reilly built a publishing empire that AI is helping to destroy. Yet he loves AI--as long as it's open source. Tim O'Reilly's yardstick for measuring the worth of a company, person, or society has long been It's no surprise that O'Reilly-- publisher, internet pioneer, VC, conference organizer, and dispenser of tech wisdom --is applying that metric to the way people design and use AI. Specifically, he's pushing for a future where open-source AI is an elixir for the masses. He worries that, like Microsoft in the 1990s, today's hyperscalers are trying to lock users into their products.

I have a visceral hatred of MicroUSB. Back when I was writing about Android phones, there was a needlessly long transition from Micro to the far, superior USB-C, that made me resent it every time I saw it. And yet even now, I need to keep one MicroUSB cable around for my microphone and camera charger. For context, Adam and Alex are talking specifically about connection formats, not generational standards -- USB 3.0 is obviously better than 2.0.
