Government panel to discuss AI use in education amid concerns of overreliance

The Japan Times

A government advisory panel is planning to discuss how best to use AI in education amid growing concerns the technology could be reducing the ability of students to think for themselves. A Japanese government advisory panel is set to start considering ways to appropriately and effectively utilize artificial intelligence in school education amid the continuing evolution of the new cutting-edge technology. At a general meeting of the Central Council for Education on Friday, education minister Yohei Matsumoto asked the panel for discussions on the government's next five-year basic education promotion program from fiscal 2028. The council plans to compile its recommendations in fiscal 2027, which begins next April. There are growing concerns that excessive reliance on AI may reduce opportunities for students to think and make decisions on their own.

ChatGPT can now control iMessage, potentially raising Apple privacy concerns

The Japan Times

An OpenAI tool that could upload Apple customer data to that company's network is likely to spark questions on privacy. OpenAI rolled out support on Thursday for controlling Apple's iMessage service via ChatGPT, a move with the potential to raise privacy concerns for the iPhone maker. The new feature, available for ChatGPT on the Mac, allows the OpenAI system to take actions such as reading, writing and sending text messages. It also can search through messages and get summaries and other information about conversations from the Apple Messages app. Apple has positioned itself as a staunch privacy advocate, and it's protective about the contents of users' messages. An OpenAI tool that could upload Apple customer data to that company's network is likely to spark questions.

Brazil launches AI supercomputer push while balancing US and Chinese tech

Al Jazeera

Brazil will invest about 2.3bn reais ($444.2m) to bolster its artificial intelligence ecosystem, splitting projects between United States and Chinese tech firms in a strategic move that underscores its efforts to balance ties with both superpowers. Just more than half the total, 1.3bn reais ($251m), will fund a supercomputing infrastructure project in Rio de Janeiro developed in partnership with China's Huawei Technologies and iFlytek, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government said on Thursday. The machine will be installed in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, chosen for its energy potential. Lula attended an announcement ceremony in the state on Thursday. The Reuters news agency quoted unnamed government officials as saying they expect US chipmaker Nvidia to win the tender.

Houthis and government trade attacks as Yemen slides back to full-scale war

Al Jazeera

Government forces have carried out dozens of attacks on Houthi positions across Yemen in the past 24 hours, the latest sign that a return to full-scale war in Yemen may be approaching. In the past day, government forces have carried out 81 attacks on Houthi positions that led to the "neutralisation" of a number of Houthi fighters and field commanders, government spokesperson Majed Abdullah al-Nuzaili said Thursday. They "successfully" hit a target at Najran airport and an Aramco facility in the province, Saree said. There was no immediate confirmation of the attacks from Saudi Arabia. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which supports the Houthis, warned on Thursday that Saudi Arabia would be "unable to contain" the Houthis as the rebels ramp up attacks on the kingdom.

HyperX's new Cloud Alpha Air makes a big bet on open-back audio

PCWorld

HyperX's new Cloud Alpha Air makes a big bet on open-back audio Gamers love HyperX's uncomplicated, long-lasting headset designs, but the Cloud Alpha Air wants to be more focused on both audio quality and streaming performance. When it comes to PC headphones, there's a pretty clear distinction between audiophile cans and gamer-focused performance headsets. But that line has gotten fuzzy in the last year or two, as evidenced by designs like the Asus ROG Kithara (and its sky-high price tag). HyperX is expanding its line of extremely popular headsets with a new open-back model, the Cloud Alpha Air. This design is definitely focused on audio quality more than some other HyperX options.

Apple Music will reportedly label any AI-made tracks later this year

Engadget

Variety reports that Apple is working on a "Made With AI" tag to use in its Apple Music service. The publication says that this label will be required if "a material portion of the content" involved use of generative AI. There's no publicly known timeline for when the tags will begin appearing or if there's a more precise definition of what use cases will merit the label. We've reached out to Apple for confirmation of this upcoming feature and will update if we receive a response. Earlier this year, Apple added support for Transparency Tags, which allowed AI-generated tracks to be marked accordingly so listeners would know what they were hearing. However, the move seemed a bit half-hearted since that designation is only applied at labels' and distributors' discretion.

Why Is Everyone in Silicon Valley Talking Like That?

The Atlantic - Technology

Why Is Everyone in Silicon Valley Talking Like That? Did you mix something up? Silicon Valley has long had its own dialect. Venture capitalists are always talking about the value of being "high agency" and making "orthogonal bets." But lately, tech vernacular has taken a peculiar turn--people have started describing themselves as if they were chatbots.
