Software launches focus on AI, analytics, 5G for operators - RCR Wireless News
A number of product launches this week aim to help operators navigate an increasingly software-centric world by better leveraging their networks and moving toward becoming digital businesses. At TM Forum, Netcracker made its most recent platform release with the launch of Netcracker 12. The new platform expands internet of things support as well as integrated artificial intelligence capabilities in Netcracker's analytics, incorporates virtualization support in operations management and is generally focused on helping operators speed service deployment and deepen analytics-based insights across customer interactions as well as their own internal ecosystems. Ari Banerjee, Netcracker's VP of strategy, said that long development cycles and limitations of physical services have inhibited operators' ability to compete with over-the-top providers. "The service offering base needs to be broadened," he added, saying that Netcracker 12 is focused on "helping them move toward becoming digital service providers."

HTC U11 Announced: Comes With Amazon's Alexa, Squeezable Frame & 12MP Camera
The HTC U11, the successor to the HTC 10, has officially been announced. The 5.5-inch flagship Android smartphone features Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, a squeezable metal frame and a camera that has a DxOMark rating of 90. HTC officially unveiled its flagship smartphone for 2017 during a special press event in Taipei, Taiwan. The HTC U11 comes with a 5.5-inch Quad HD Super LCD 5 display layered with Gorilla Glass 5. Its body comes with what the company calls a "liquid glass" design that's been refined from the HTC U Ultra and the HTC U Play. Like the front panel, the back is also covered with the Gorilla Glass 5.

Distributed Adaptive Learning of Graph Signals

The aim of this paper is to propose distributed strategies for adaptive learning of signals defined over graphs. Assuming the graph signal to be bandlimited, the method enables distributed reconstruction, with guaranteed performance in terms of mean-square error, and tracking from a limited number of sampled observations taken from a subset of vertices. A detailed mean square analysis is carried out and illustrates the role played by the sampling strategy on the performance of the proposed method. Finally, some useful strategies for distributed selection of the sampling set are provided. Several numerical results validate our theoretical findings, and illustrate the performance of the proposed method for distributed adaptive learning of signals defined over graphs.

Every single time I go back to my parents' home I try to get them to cancel their home phone line. And every time I fail. I don't know how much they pay for their phone bill off the top of my head, but whatever it is, it's too much -- especially since they rarely use it, and they have smartphones which I generously pay for. Naturally, as cellphones have become ubiquitous, the number of landlines in homes have declined and will continue to fall.
Amazon's Echo family can now make calls and send messages
One of the most notable new features introduced alongside Amazon's new Echo Show is the ability to make calls with Alexa, something that's been rumored for a while now. And the good news is that this feature isn't limited to just the Echo Show. When it rolls out later today (via an update to the Alexa iOS and Android apps), you'll be able to use all existing Echo hardware to place voice calls, video calls and send messages. You'll obviously need an Echo Show for video calling, but the support for voice calling and messaging is pretty robust. If you have an Echo, Echo Dot or Echo Show, you can initiate calls (including video calls with the Show) and send messages to anyone else in your address book who has turned on Alexa calling.

Over the last couple of decades, those looking for a cluster management platform faced no shortage of choices. However, large-scale clusters are being asked to operate in different ways, namely by chewing on large-scale deep learning workloads--and this requires a specialized approach to get high utilization, efficiency, and performance. Nearly all of the cluster management tools from the high performance computing community are being bent in the machine learning direction, but for production deep learning shops, there appears to be a DIY tendency. This is not as complicated as it might sound, given the range of container-based open source tools, and such a homegrown approach can bake in tunings for specific frameworks and internal applications. The lack of a sufficiently robust cluster manager for a large-scale cluster handling large machine learning workloads pushed researchers at the Chinese machine learning giant, Sensetime, to build their own.
