Auguries suggest the almost three-hour drama will repeat the success of Nolan's previous film both at the box office (Oppenheimer took nearly a billion dollars) and the Academy Awards (it won seven Oscars). But before that, a new audiobook version of Homer's tale has been released starring one of Nolan's most frequent collaborators: Michael Caine, with whom he has worked on eight films, including the Dark Knight trilogy. Caine, now 93, announced his retirement at the Red Sea film festival in Saudi Arabia last December. It was the fourth time he has done so, and seems as unlikely to be binding as the previous three times, particularly thanks to a deal the actor struck shortly beforehand to license an AI version of his voice.

After years of releasing smart glasses that bore the Ray-Ban or Oakley brand, Meta has finally made its own (although still in collaboration with Essilor Luxxotica). The company today unveiled a trio of AI Glasses -- the Fury, the Adventurer and the Meta Glasses by Kylie (labeled in some places as Starfire), and the first two of those styles start at $299. The variant that was co-designed with celebrity Kylie Jenner, will cost $399. At its launch event in New York City yesterday, Meta set us up with a pair of the new glasses and a companion phone, and let us roam around the venue and its demo areas somewhat freely. The company also had multiple units of the other styles around for us to pick up and try on as we liked, so I got a good sense of all the different options available.

Cooperative Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Question Answering: Mutual Information Exchange and Ranking by Contrasting Layers
Since large language models (LLMs) have a tendency to generate factually inaccurate output, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has gained significant attention as a key means to mitigate this downside of harnessing only LLMs. However, existing RAG methods for simple and multi-hop question answering (QA) are still prone to incorrect retrievals and hallucinations. To address these limitations, we propose CoopRAG, a novel RAG framework for the QA task in which a retriever and an LLM work cooperatively with each other by exchanging informative knowledge, and the earlier and later layers of the retriever model work cooperatively with each other to accurately rank the retrieved documents relevant to a given query. In this framework, we (i) unroll a question into sub-questions and a reasoning chain in which uncertain positions are masked, (ii) retrieve the documents relevant to the question augmented with the sub-questions and the reasoning chain, (iii) rerank the documents by contrasting layers of the retriever, and (iv) reconstruct the reasoning chain by filling the masked positions via the LLM. Our experiments demonstrate that CoopRAG consistently outperforms state-of-the-art QA methods on three multi-hop QA datasets as well as a simple QA dataset in terms of both the retrieval and QA performances.
Leveraging semantic similarity for experimentation with AI-generated treatments
Large Language Models (LLMs) enable a new form of digital experimentation where treatments combine human and model-generated content in increasingly sophisticated ways. The main methodological challenge in this setting is representing these high-dimensional treatments without losing their semantic meaning or rendering analysis intractable. Here we address this problem by focusing on learning low-dimensional representations that capture the underlying structure of such treatments. These representations enable downstream applications such as guiding generative models to produce meaningful treatment variants and facilitating adaptive assignment in online experiments. We propose double kernel representation learning, which models the causal effect through the inner product of kernel-based representations of treatments and user covariates. We develop an alternating-minimization algorithm that learns these representations efficiently from data and provide convergence guarantees under a low-rank factor model. As an application of this framework, we introduce an adaptive design strategy for online experimentation and demonstrate the method's effectiveness through numerical experiments.
VGGT-SLAM: Dense RGBSLAM Optimized on the SL(4) Manifold
We present VGGT-SLAM, a dense RGBSLAM system constructed by incrementally and globally aligning submaps created from the feed-forward scene reconstruction approach VGGT using only uncalibrated monocular cameras. While related works align submaps using similarity transforms (i.e., translation, rotation, and scale), we show that such approaches are inadequate in the case of uncalibrated cameras. In particular, we revisit the idea of reconstruction ambiguity, where given a set of uncalibrated cameras with no assumption on the camera motion or scene structure, the scene can only be reconstructed up to a 15-degreesof-freedom projective transformation of the true geometry. This inspires us to recover a consistent scene reconstruction across submaps by optimizing over the SL(4) manifold, thus estimating 15-degrees-of-freedom homography transforms between sequential submaps while accounting for potential loop closure constraints. As verified by extensive experiments, we demonstrate that VGGTSLAM achieves improved map quality using long video sequences that are infeasible for VGGT due to its high GPU requirements.
