Mehdi Hasan: Disrupting democracy's decline

Al Jazeera

With democracy on the decline in both the UK and US, Mehdi Hasan makes the case for independent journalism. Mehdi Hasan has had a front seat to US and UK politics for decades. With Britain facing yet another change in prime minister a decade after Brexit and the US looking ahead to its next vote with the midterm elections in November, we get his take on this moment and why independent journalism is needed more than ever. How did Colombia's election split a nation in two? Who's being left out of the World Cup? How is China using AI in the classroom?

Tidal isn't banning AI music, but it won't pay people who upload it

Engadget

The streaming service's new policy says that 100-percent AI-generated music will be demonetized. Tidal revealed its sweeping policy on AI-generated music that details exactly how the music streaming service will handle this growing phenomenon . The music-streaming platform explained on its website that it would demonetize any music that's identified as 100 percent AI-generated. Tidal is still allowing tracks made with AI on its platform, but will slap a tag on anything that's 100 percent AI-generated so its users are aware. Tidal's priority is ensuring royalties go to original works directly produced, written, and performed by people, the policy read.

Netflix is forcing users to link profiles to separate email addresses

PCWorld

Netflix is implementing a new requirement for users to link separate email addresses to each profile on shared accounts, with no apparent opt-out option available. PCWorld reports that customer support screenshots and Reddit user experiences confirm this policy rollout, though an official announcement is still pending. While Netflix claims this enhances login security and personalization, critics view it as a data collection method that increases company control over users. Since 2023, it's been possible to share your Netflix account with someone who doesn't live in your household. Account sharing relies on separate profiles and comes with additional costs, but otherwise wasn't subject to strict rules. That now appears to be changing.

What Happened to Your Face?

The New Yorker

What Happened to Your Face? How the human countenance became something to study, edit, optimize, and scan. The physiognomists promised that your character could be read from your features. Certain forms of facial-recognition technology have revived that old fantasy in digital form. Several months ago, my partner and I bought an apartment in South London. Our previous home was a rental in which, for reasons best known to the landlord, there were mirrors everywhere. The bathroom had two; there was one outside on the terrace; in the bedroom, mirrored panels stretched across a twenty-foot-long wall. On moving day, we realized that we had a problem: the new apartment was mirror-free, and because we'd been so spoiled we weren't bringing one of our own. We spent a few days filling our drafty rooms, decanting books, building furniture, and dressing every morning without seeing ourselves in profile. It was a couple of weeks before we bought a simple mirror, wooden and round, to hang above the bathroom sink. By then, I joked, we didn't recognize ourselves.
