Google's DeepMind Artificial Intelligence gets Human-like Voice - 1redDrop

#artificialintelligence

In 2014 Google bought a UK-based artificial intelligence research lab called DeepMind for a hefty 530 million. Since then, DeepMind has made rapid progress in AI technologies, including health and gaming applications. The latest achievement of DeepMind is WaveNet, an AI computer program that can almost mimic the way humans speak. Experts say that WaveNet has "halved" the gap between machine-speak and a natural human voice. So what we're talking about here is more like Jarvis from Iron Man than Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator – or any of his other movies, for that matter!

VR Pioneer Chris Milk: Virtual Reality Will Mirror Life Like Nothing Else Before

#artificialintelligence

I don't think the future of VR looks like video games; I don't think it looks like cinematic VR; I think it looks like stories from our real lives. It's the most amazing afternoon you've ever had. For one person, it might be what we call a rom-com, for another it might be an action movie. For another, it might be something we don't have a movie genre preexisting for. It might be just exploring.

Why AI Technology Can't Handle the Truth

#artificialintelligence

Last month, Facebook's "Trending" tab featured Megyn Kelly as a topic, displaying hoax news items claiming she had been fired by Fox News. Many critics pointed out that the mistake occurred shortly after the social network decided to shed the editorial team in charge of overseeing trending topics. The company had gone almost entirely algorithmic with the feature, and the move had almost immediately failed. A Quartz postmortem ascribed the incident to an "inmates running the asylum" scenario. The algorithm that surfaced the news based its selection on Facebook users' activity, and for reasons of policy or practice human overseers had neglected to correct the mistake.

Alexa's move to the tablet is a bigger deal than you may think

Washington Post - Technology News

On Thursday, Amazon announced that it is adding its voice assistant Alexa to its Fire tablets for the first time. The voice assistant has previously been in Amazon's Echo, Fire TV and Fire Stick devices, but will launch with the new, low-priced 90 Fire HD 8 tablet that ships on Sept. 21. Alexa is also coming to the Fire HD 10, Fire and last year's Fire HD 8 tablets via a free over-the-air software update in the coming months. This move is significant, as it puts Alexa more at odds with Siri, Apple's voice assistant, and pitches up the simmering competition in the voice-assistant space. The end game of all these voice assistants is to become an integral part of users' lives.

The grandfather kings of nerdcore

Engadget

In terms of popularity, nerdcore occupies a space somewhere between underground hip hop and the end of the universe, according to rapper and educator Mega Ran. Nerdcore is a brand of hip hop characterized by a focus on geeky things, which means its subject matter is as vast and varied as Tolkien's Encircling Sea. It's niche but limitless; visible but not known. It's big enough to support the musical careers of artists like MC Lars, MC Frontalot, Beefy and MC Chris, yet it's small enough that even the most fervent Star Wars fan may have never heard of it. Even in an age where geek chic is hot and "nerd" is no longer a vicious insult, nerdcore remains underground -- but its influence on popular culture is showing.

'Perfect Illusion' shows Lady Gaga has rediscovered her mojo

Los Angeles Times

Let's not bother with a poker face here. Released late Thursday, "Perfect Illusion" is a stomping disco-rock jam with a killer robot-Motown groove, buckets of scuzz-punk guitar fuzz and a key change designed to trigger Pavlovian fist-pumps. It has a melody that will burrow into your brain before the 2-minute mark. And like all the best pop songs, it can't decide if it's sad or happy, paranoid or ecstatic; the tune lifts you up at the same time that it marches over you, a blast of serotonin under constant threat of reuptake. "I don't need eyes to see / I felt you touching me," Lady Gaga sings, her voice fraying at the edges.
