Meet Sofia. Will She Destroy the World?
Imagine if you can, Japanese punk rock in the background and a motorcycle speeding through the streets of Tokyo. The camera pans around, over the shoulder of the rider and up ahead is a raging monster. A truck pulls up beside the motorcycle and a crane/lift contraption pulls it inside. They spring into action battling the beast as the A.D. Police arrive and bumble around. The armored suits crush the monster and vanish.

World's First AI Mortgage Advice Chat Bot Fintech Schweiz Digital Finance News - FintechNewsCH
UK tech startup, habito, has launched the world's first artificially intelligent Digital Mortgage Adviser (DMA) allowing millions of consumers to discuss their mortgage needs from any connected device, 24/7, without requiring a human broker. Built using AI technology and habito's market-leading algorithm, the DMA marries all the elements of a customer's financial life (e.g. The DMA explains the impact consumers' decisions will have on each mortgage configuration as a traditional mortgage broker would, but in a fraction of the time (average 10 minutes). Habito has the ability to search hundreds of products (versus a handful), so once the advice is complete consumers can be sure they're on the best mortgage for them, which can result in savings of thousands of pounds per year*. In designing the new system, habito analysed hundreds of advice interviews in order to understand what consumers needed and what formed the basis of informative advice.
'Westworld' Season 1 Spoilers: Why Creators Don't Want To Reveal Who's Human And Robot
Before HBO's new sci-fi drama "Westworld" hits the small screen, fans already know of certain characters who are robotic "hosts." But as for the other characters, show creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy would rather have fans determine for themselves whether they are humans or hosts. Evan Rachel Wood's character Dolores Abernathy has already been outed as a host, but the actress told the L.A. Times that fans would have a difficult time guessing the identities of other Westworld mainstays. "It's a show you really want to pay attention to while you're watching it. I think when this series is done, your DVRs are going to break because everyone is immediately going to go back and re-watch the whole thing, and it will probably be better the second time," she said.
Facial recognition used against concert ticket scalping in Japan
When a 48-year-old male fan of girl band Momoiro Clover Z arrived at a recent concert, he looked into the camera of a facial-recognition device to get his pre-paid ticket. In the past, I used to wait for 30 minutes to an hour before I was able to get in," said the man from Yokohama. The concert was taking place at Seibu Prince Dome in Saitama Prefecture. Operators of the group's concerts introduced the technology in July 2014 to combat scalping. At first, staff would check the concertgoers' IDs.
IBM Watson Created The First-Ever AI-Made Movie Trailer For 'Morgan'
One of the tense moments Watson chose for the Morgan trailer. For a film about the risks of pushing the limits of technology too far, it only makes sense to advertise for it using artificial intelligence. Morgan, staring Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti, is a sci-fi thriller about scientists who've created a synthetic humanoid whose potential has grown dangerously beyond their control. Fitting, then, that they'd employ the help of America's AI sweetheart IBM Watson to build the film's trailer. IBM used machine learning and experimental Watson APIs, parsing out the trailers of 100 horror movies.
How Tesla Fixed a Deadly Flaw in Its Autopilot
Radar, Musk said, is problematic as a control mechanism for autopilot, because the signal doesn't readily distinguish between different types of objects. For instance, the dish-shaped bottom of a metal soda can reflects radio waves in a way that could make it appear to be a deadly obstacle. Yet those same waves will travel right through a solid oak tree, rendering it nearly invisible. To avoid constantly screeching to a halt in front of soda cans, Tesla's autopilot system did not treat radar data alone as sufficient to trigger emergency braking. Instead it relied on processing data from the car's video camera, which can readily identify many common obstacles based on their appearance.
Watch the First ever Movie Trailer Made by Artificial Intelligence
Scientists at IBM Research have collaborated with 20th Century Fox to create the first-ever cognitive movie trailer for the movie Morgan. Utilizing experimental Watson APIs and machine learning techniques, the IBM Research system analyzed hundreds of horror/thriller movie trailers. After learning what keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, the AI system suggested the top 10 best candidate moments for a trailer from the movie Morgan, which an IBM filmmaker then edited and arranged together.
Anita Sarkeesian and the defiant women who shaped history
Despite experiencing years of online harassment, Anita Sarkeesian isn't about to quit now. Sarkeesian, a YouTube personality famous for her deconstruction of gender stereotypes in video games, just launched a new video series that challenges how women are portrayed in history. "Ordinary Women: Daring to Defy History" is a collection of five mini-biographies of women who Sarkeesian says rejected convention in their time. They are: Murasaki Shikibu, the first modern novelist; Ada Lovelace, creator of the first computer program; Emma Goldman, a political revolutionary; Ching Shih, a pirate captain; and Ida B. Wells, a journalist and civil rights activist. A new episode will air on Sarkeesian's YouTube channel each month through January 2016.
