Runnin' down a dream: Tom Petty to be celebrated as 2017 MusiCares Person of the Year

Los Angeles Times

Whether moving west down Ventura Boulevard, gliding down over Mulholland or living in Reseda with a freeway running through the yard, Tom Petty has soundtracked Southern California life for more than 40 years. Those classic songs, including "American Girl," "The Waiting," "Wildflowers," "Free Fallin'" and dozens of others, will be celebrated in February when Petty receives the 2017 MusiCares Person of the Year award. Announced Wednesday, the honor is presented by MusiCares, a Los Angeles charity that offers assistance to musicians and music professionals in need. The organization is the primary charitable arm of the Recording Academy, which presents the yearly Grammy Awards. Previous winners have included Carole King, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and Bob Dylan.

Marvel looks to the future and films four Stan Lee cameos in one day

Los Angeles Times

Comic book legend and Marvel mastermind Stan Lee recently took time out of his schedule to travel to Georgia to film four cameos in a single day for upcoming Marvel films. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed the filming at a Q&A session that followed a Friday screening of "Captain America: Civil War." The 93-year-old Lee, who with several artists created many of comics' most iconic characters, including Spider-Man, the Hulk and Iron Man, has had cameo appearances in nearly every Marvel live-action film, and neither Feige nor Lee seem interested in that trend ending any time soon. But neither man has any interest in attaching a generic Lee cameo to a project just to have one. "We do not shoot random ones. They're always very specific," Feige said during the Q&A.

Why DJI's foldable drone will crush the GoPro Karma

Mashable

It was only a week ago when GoPro threw it's epic launch party in Squaw Valley, California to formally introduce its Karma drone (along with the Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 Session action cameras). GoPro CEO Nick Woodman boisterously proclaimed the Karma was the only drone that folded up and fit into a backpack. Beyond that, the Karma is more than just a drone, he said. SEE ALSO: Mavic Pro, DJI's first foldable drone, is the size of a water bottle With all the camera equipment that's included, the Karma is an impressive package with an even more attractive 800 price tag. That's without a GoPro camera, but even the 1,000 bundle with a Hero 5 Session is a good value, and it's half the price of DJI's 2,000 Phantom 4. But that was last week. On Monday, DJI announced its new Mavic Pro, a foldable drone that's even smaller than the Karma and fits in your hand (sorta).

Lin-Manuel Miranda not throwing away his shot to host 'Saturday Night Live'

Los Angeles Times

He's won an Emmy, a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and a few Tonys, but there are still a million things that Lin-Manuel Miranda hasn't done. But he'll soon add another big accomplishment to his resumรฉ. Miranda will return to center stage Oct. 8 when he hosts "Saturday Night Live" with musical guest Twenty One Pilots, NBC announced Wednesday morning. Though it will be Miranda's first time hosting "SNL," it won't be the first time the actor's appeared at length on NBC. Artificial Intelligence Wrote a Pop Song, and It's Better Than You Think

#artificialintelligence

You probably knew this day was coming: A computer has made a pop song. No, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber (or the people who secretly write much of the stars' music) shouldn't fear for their jobs just yet. The song is the product of Flow Machines, a project from Sony's Paris-based Computer Science Laboratory to create music using artificial intelligence. According to Flow Machines' website, its AI analyzes a large database of 13,000 music samples, then gets programmed to compose a song in a certain style. In the case of the first track released, "Daddy's Car," the system was told to create music in the style of the Beatles. The result does have a soothing, poppy Beatles quality.

In order to create an artificial intelligence system like Flow Machines capable of composing music, programmers had to feed the program thousands and thousands of examples of sheet music from a large database. The sheet music in this database consisted of songs of varying styles. After Flow Machines analyzed all of the sheet music, a human composer gave the AI system a style prompt as a basis for a composition. Flow Machines was able to take that initial prompt and turn it into a complete melody and harmony.

World's first pop song composed by AI released this week

Earlier this week, Sony CSL research released the first ever pop song to be composed entirely by an AI system which is called Flow Machines. A human musician, a French composer named Benoit Carre produced, mixed, and wrote the lyrics for the song but the melody and harmony of the track were composed entirely by Flow Machines.
