Google Home Updates: I/O 2017 Keynote Brings New Features To AI Assistant Hardware

International Business Times

Google announced a host of new features for its Google Home AI assistant at its I/O 2017 keynote Wednesday. New features include proactive assistance, hands-free calling, visual responses and expanded support for various music and video applications. Proactive assistance helps users keep on top of tasks that are already included within other features such as Google Calendar. For example, Google Home will alert users of when they need to leave home to get to an event on time. Hands-free calling allows users to enable a phone call by simply asking Google Home to call a contact.

Google Home gains Bluetooth connectivity to play audio from any device

Google's smart speaker was already handy for a lot of things, but today the company is announcing a ton of new features for the device. At Google I/O 2017, the company said it's adding Bluetooth connectivity to Google Home. This means you'll be able to play music and other audio from any device, including those running Android and iOS. Google also revealed that Spotify's free tier will be available on Home. Previously, you needed a paid monthly subscription in order to beam your tunes to the speaker from that library.

Google Home, the tech giant's digital assistant and answer to the popular Amazon Echo, is adding a long list of new features, Google vice president Rishi Chandra announced at the company's I/O conference Wednesday. Users will soon be able to make phone calls using the device, and the HBO Now streaming service, owned by Time Warner Inc, will be integrated as well.

Amazon Echo's Alexa is getting push notifications, but they won't annoy you

PCWorld

Alexa, Amazon's digital assistant, has more than 12,000 skills available, and in the coming weeks some of them will be able to send notifications to your Echo and other Alexa-enabled devices. To start, just four skills will have notifications available including AccuWeather, JustEat, Life360, and The Washington Post. Shopping updates from Amazon's storefront are also coming presumably for item price tracking and the like. Amazon didn't say when notifications would go live for users other than it will happen "soon." These notifications won't work the same as they do on your phone, where every app immediately wants to start buzzing.

[R][1705.05502] The power of deeper networks for expressing natural functions • r/MachineLearning

@machinelearnbot

It is well-known that neural networks are universal approximators, but that deeper networks tend to be much more efficient than shallow ones. We shed light on this by proving that the total number of neurons m required to approximate natural classes of multivariate polynomials of n variables grows only linearly with n for deep neural networks, but grows exponentially when merely a single hidden layer is allowed. We also provide evidence that when the number of hidden layers is increased from 1 to k, the neuron requirement grows exponentially not with n but with n1/k, suggesting that the minimum number of layers required for computational tractability grows only logarithmically with n.

AI has been used to speed up processes and take over the busy work in multiple creative industries as of late - but can smart machines also be used to actually create content? We decided to answer that question by compiling 35 AI companies whose powerful technologies are automating the creation of four different types of content: text, audio, graphic design, and video. With these tools in hand, any content creator can tell their story in any way that they like. Android O: Everything you need to know about Google's new phone software

The Independent - Tech

Google is preparing the next version of its mobile operating system, currently known as Android O. It will succeed Nougat, which was released late last year, and will introduce brand new functionality to Android smartphones and tablets. Android is the most popular mobile platform in the world and, as ever, there will be plenty of pressure on the company to deliver the features that millions of its users want. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
