Movie Recommendation: Should I trust IMDb?

#artificialintelligence

Hi there, nice comments about the top 12 secret shortcuts of Dataiku DSS convinced me to write another one: this time it's about plugins, movies, APIs, and how to choose the best one to watch with friends. A friend of mine has a list of all her DVDs (and takes note of who borrowed what;-). How do I choose the top 5 movies I'd like to borrow? I'm not a movie maniac and I don't know most of the titles of her collection. And when I do know one, it's most often because I have already seen it (and would prefer to watch a new one).

Warcraft: The Beginning proves a monster hit in China

The Guardian

Warcraft: The Beginning, the adaptation of the video game World of Warcraft, has proved a massive hit in China, with a first-day take of 46m ( 31.8m), the second biggest in the country's history after another Hollywood hit, Furious 7, which took 63.1m in its first 24 hours in 2015. Warcraft's impressive results put it on course to challenge Furious 7's 150m opening instalment in China – and thoroughly dwarfs the projected result for its domestic release in the US, which is currently tracking for around 25m when it opens on Friday. Warcraft's success in China has been ascribed partly to the game's popularity there – according to the International Business Times (IBT), an estimated half of the world's players are based in the country – and partly to the favourable position the film acquired in the release calendar due to the participation of a number of powerful Chinese enterprises in Warcraft: notably the purchase of production outfit Legendary Pictures by conglomerate Dalian Wanda. However, box-office analysts don't expect Warcraft to trouble any Hollywood-import grossing records, such as Furious 7's total of 390m, let alone domestic record holder The Mermaid, which finished with 526m earlier this year. Related: A bigger splash: how did The Mermaid become China's biggest ever film?

Fight the Power, With a Supergroup?

The New Yorker

Prophets of Rage, composed of members of Rage Against the Machine, Cypress Hill, and Public Enemy is, in the words of its guitarist, Tom Morello, an "élite task force of revolutionary musicians determined to confront this mountain of election-year bullshit, and confront it head-on, with Marshall stacks blazing." Morello prefers his gassy characterization to the admittedly hokey term "supergroup," but the outfit does have a Voltron-like quality: an intimidating assemblage of steely-faced, aggressively minded musicians from the early nineties, stomping in to save us from ourselves. On Monday, Prophets of Rage announced a North American tour that will begin on July 19th, at the Republican National Convention, in Cleveland, and has been titled "Make America Rage Again." Has America ever stopped raging? On dark days, it feels as if we are raging more than ever.

Gold Standard: 'Mr. Robot' stars could break into the Emmy acting races

Los Angeles Times

"Downton Abbey" and "The Good Wife" have racked up 47 Emmy acting nominations over the course of their runs, and you can bet your Yorkshire pudding that voters are going to send these two departing shows out with a warm embrace. Anything else would be a slap in the face, something we know "Good Wife" fans do not appreciate one bit. Analysis: "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm finally won this Emmy last year. Will it now be Spacey's turn? But voters have an array of actors from new shows this year, including some – Giamatti ("Billions"), Aaron Paul ("The Path") and Bobby Cannavale ("Vinyl") – who have won Emmys for past work.

Three Ways Artificial Intelligence Is Being Applied To Creative Fields

#artificialintelligence

It's become customary to be wowed by computers today. IBM's supercomputer, Watson, beat former Jeopardy! More recently, Google's AlphaGo eclipsed Lee Sedol in a challenge of Go, an ancient board game. These computer systems used artificial intelligence (AI) to outshine humans. While board and game show victories are exciting, they overshadow the practical benefits of AI.

A Computer Tried (and Failed) to Write This Article

#artificialintelligence

Here I am, a human, writing a story assigned to a machine. If I'd published what the computer came up with, you'd be reading something like: "content that was that communications and everything that makes on a person what they're are also to be in the Internet in the fact about it is that models are technologication of the same that its also from the most computer." A machine really did come up with that garbage. But let me back up for a second. A little over a year ago, I started asking around--among computer scientists at universities and tech companies, mostly--to see if someone would help me design and carry out a weird little experiment I had in mind.

Spotify Plots Path to Profit with Machine Learning Tactics

#artificialintelligence

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Spotify is a household name, with more paying users than any other music-streaming service in the world. But it doesn't make a penny. Those 30 million paid subscribers help it rake in almost half the revenues in the global industry. But most of the money goes to record labels and artists, while the privately owned Swedish company faces growing competition from Apple with its deep pockets and massive iPhone user base. To reduce its dependence on labels and stand apart from rivals, Spotify is broadening beyond its music library.

'Warcraft' China Box Office: Video Game Epic Probably Won't Beat 'Furious 7,' Despite Presale Record

International Business Times

"Warcraft" just snatched China's all-time midnight presales record from "Furious 7," and it's set to soar to the top of the country's box office as it opens this weekend on more screens than any other film has before. But the video game epic probably won't surpass the car-racing action flick. An estimated one-half of the globe's players of "World of Warcraft" -- the Activision Blizzard video game series on which the movie is based -- live in China, so their enthusiasm was key to setting that presales record. And through late Wednesday, "Warcraft" is off to a sizzling 46 million start in China. Although presales are generally a good proxy for how well a film will do there, the record 391 million haul pulled in by "Furious 7," the highest-grossing Hollywood movie ever in China, should be safe.

'Voltron: Legendary Defender' roars back to life on Netflix, more colorful and still cheesy

Los Angeles Times

In its quest to conquer as much of the universe as the wires will reach, Netflix has engaged DreamWorks Animation in a revival of the 1980s space-robot franchise, now titled "Voltron: Legendary Defender," whose 13 episodes go live to binge or not to binge Friday. They've slapped on a fresh coat of digital paint, turned up the sound and assembled a cast that includes Steven Yeun, Tyler Labine, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Rhys Darby, familiar from the live-action world, along with Jeremy Shada (the voice of Finn on "Adventure Time"), Kimberly Brooks and Josh Keaton, whom you are as of yet more likely to have heard, in cartoons or video games, than seen. Does it better its predecessor? Your cherished memories aside, that is a bar set low. So, yes, it does better by them – by quite a lot and, at the same time significantly, not by too much.

WIRED Book Club: Getting Up to Speed With the Challenging Ancillary Justice

WIRED

Good science fiction requires close reading. That's what we're discovering as we embark on Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice, the first book in her Imperial Radch trilogy. Not only are most gender pronouns "she," but Leckie isn't exactly generous with her world-building--she holds back on explanation in favor of letting readers do the work. Which is, of course, great for our purposes. Read up on our thoughts below, then join us in the comments for further discussion.
